Michigan MBB Transfer Target: Tre Donaldson
https://247sports.com/Player/Tre-Donaldson-46101161/
He's visiting Michigan on the 19th and apparently already has been crystal balled to Michigan by Travis Branham. Branham is pretty reliable.
Donaldson makes a lot of sense for Dusty's offense. He's 6'3" 200 lbs G who is very athletic. He's a blur on the floor and has some shooting chops (41% at low volume).
I can't imagine Holloway and Donaldson committing to the same school. Donaldson is a better fit for May but Holloway has higher upside.

Do want

He might need an update to his Twitter banner ...

6'3" point guard? He's going to look enormous.

Vlad at center with Wolf at PF, this guy at PG. Michigan becomes the tallest team in the NCAA?

I would be surprised if Wolf plays PF unless they play Indiana or teams that likes to play two bigs on the floor.

Donaldson is absolutely a take, but he looks much closer to 6'0" in his highlights...which is still big by our recent standards, I realize.

His 247 profile lists him as a 6'1" QB and safety. Possible he grew after high school, but I'm guessing he's a basketball measure 6'3" in shoes. But that's still a lot taller than Dug.
You had me at "point guard."

I heard Tipton also said he's coming to Michigan.

Tipton is coming to Michigan?

While all the speculating is fun, I'm waiting—only approximately patiently—for something official from May.

April would be even better.

Fun fact: he was actually a 4* safety in high school as well, but decided to only play basketball in college.

His 247 profile lists him as a safety in HS and a PG in the portal. Pretty jarring to see a guy listed at two positions from different sports on the same page lmao

Cool hair.

The announcers will love "Tre with the trey!!!"
Not to burst your bubble, but we've been here before with a Trey at PG.
It worked out pretty well as I recall.

Is there a reason we are expecting Dusty to have an easier time getting players through admissions than Howard did? Hard to get excited about transfers until they've officially signed.
Probably not and this guy seems to be in the "won't get through/will lose a bunch of credits" category. Juwan did have a lot of success in the portal though. We got screwed with Shannon and Love but did get Mike Smith, Chaundee Brown, Devante Jones, Jaelin Llewellyn, Joey Baker, Nimari Burnett, and Oliver Nkamhoua.
Freshman, Sophomores, and grad students don't run the risk of losing many if any, I thought...
I believe this guy is a junior. Hence why said he was in the "won't get through/will lose a bunch of credits" category.
This is the end of his sophomore year.
The problem with juniors is that they still need to get 60 credits at UofM to get a UofM degree. So even if all of their credits transfer over, they still need 60 credits (2 years worth) to graduate. That’s like giving up a whole year of college. Some guys want the degree to have something to fall back on, but don’t want to give up a year towards the degree.
Because JB and Warde told him which type of players can get through in transfer portal. Dusty knows what to expect from the transfer portal and is basically targeting freshmen/sophomore and grad transfers.
Grad transfers are nearly automatically admitted so it's not a problem.
Michigan is not going to accept someone who will take less than 60 credits at UofM unless they are a graduate. That means targeting to-be senior Caleb Love and to-be senior Terrance Shannon Jr is a complete waste of time.
Shannon was set to graduate from Texas Tech over the summer before enrolling and Tech blocked it IIRC.
But wasn't the problem with Shannon that Texas Tech wouldn't let him graduate or something? I'm pretty sure that wasn't on Juwan screwing up, it was that Illinois was allowing something Michigan wasn't.
I'm sure they would have let him stick around and pay his own way to graduate. They can't kick him out of school for not wanting to play on the bball team but they can take away his scholarship. I'm sure it was more like "why would Shannon want to stick around campus for another 3 months when he could already be in Champagne and working out with the team every day?"
Because May will likely go after transfers who can get into UM, unlike Juwan?
I mean Juwan has landed a bunch of transfers to his team like Mike Smith, Chaundee Brown, Devante Jones, Jaelin Llewellyn, Joey Baker, Nimari Burnett, and Oliver Nkamhoua.
It's just happen that Caleb Love and Terrance Shannon are two high profile transfers that did not get admitted.
He's a sophomore. Only been in college two years - which means he can likely transfer almost all of his credits assuming he wasn't taking remedial classes.
It's Juniors and Seniors that are an issue - Freshman, Sophomores, and grad transfers don't suffer from the 60 credit transfer limit.
The kid may only be sophomore but doesn't mean he would get all his credits to transfer. I thought some of the issues was also certain classes no transferrin due to Michigan not having an equivalen course. Wasn' that an issue for Myles Hinton and also why Michigan doesn't really recruit JUCO players?
Let's say he only gets 48 credits out of 60+ he has right now to transfer. Is that a big deal? I'm guessing with summer classes the next two years he can catch up.
It would for me because I would hate to do the work over again. That to me is more of the problem. Why should anyone be required to retake classes they passed and completed. Especially courses that are not in a major or entry level major courses. And as someone who transferred schools in college, this was my experience.
Hinton was trying to transfer a sub-100 level class. Michigan doesn't give you credit for those even if you take them at Michigan.
I think we should've learned by now that it's better to have more than a couple of guards on the roster rather than not enough. If he fills a need, take him.
