In 2012, Countess was injured on punt coverage after we forced a Bama 3 and out on their first drive.

Against Iowa, we did lose Fitz Toussaint for the season with a broken leg

01/18/2019 - 3:42pm Cal's administration was not…

Cal's administration was not too supportive of the football program so recruiting was difficult. In particular, the high academic standards made it tough to compete and build depth. Once he didn't have an All-Pro like Aaron Rodgers, DeSean Jackson, and Marshawn Lynch to paper over things, they fell off. He also burned himself out which accelerated the decline.

Incoming freshman class wasn't born yet the last time we won in Columbus :(

Did we change the Dosunmu matchup at halftime? Seemed like Poole was on him in the 1st half but Matthews got the assignment in the 2nd.

I think Alabama is gonna promote Enos to OC

01/10/2019 - 11:32am I recall Gary insisting on…

I recall Gary insisting on playing end, not tackle during his recruitment. The other complication is that we had Hurst at 3 tech during Gary's first two years, so somebody had to play out of position.

01/08/2019 - 3:19pm I've heard of Solomon,…

I've heard of Solomon, Velazquez, and Q Johnson also saying the coaches have talked to them about playing viper. Obviously all of these guys aren't gonna play there, so I'm not sure if the coaches are just giving a long list of possibilities that is getting misinterpreted.

01/08/2019 - 3:17pm We will have 2 open guard…

We will have 2 open guard spots (and maybe a center spot) in his freshman year so we can pitch the playing time on the interior. I'm curious how receptive he would be to that. 247 does list him as a guard.

We had Hurst the last few years and I like Hinton and Mazi. The gap is Solomon not really doing much in a winged helmet.

Rashan Gary didn't start as the consensus #1 overall recruit

Trevor Lawrence is a true freshman and yet he is better than any quarterback in Michigan history

Bucs will be hiring Bruce Arians in all likelihood

12/30/2018 - 2:52pm Speed and especially…

Speed and especially quickness are missing from this offense. Watching Oklahoma vs Alabama made this very obvious. Nobody on Michigan can really accelerate to that elite level like those guys can. I go back to the spring combine we did in 2017. Our fastest running back was Evans with only a 4.64! And none of our guys are particularly overpowering. Is it really a surprise we can't run the ball against other elite teams?

Did you miss Carr getting wrecked by Tennessee and USC in a bowl game and going 1-6 vs Tressel?

My rule of thumb is flaky recruit = flaky player

A coworker of mine was roommates in college with a current NFL agent. Agent indeed advises his potential clients to sit out bowl games.

Adam, what are your thoughts on Hinton's drop in the 247 rankings?

Thanks for this. Didn't get to watch this week. Did Tarik Black play at all?

10/24/2018 - 9:47am Agreed. I think Jay is…

Agreed. I think Jay is building an impressive resume. He has coached an All-American tight end and the best running back Michigan has had in 10 years. He is a strong recruiter as well. From following him on Twitter, it's apparent he has an interest in play design. I believe he was responsible for the train formation from 2016.

Maybe not right now, but 2 years from now he could definitely get some looks from a lower tier P5 or higher G5 program.

10/23/2018 - 10:38pm Pretty good quickness at his… Pretty good quickness at his height and length. I'm definitely intrigued to see how he looks down the line as an athlete once he adds strength and corrects his valgus. Seems like the combination of his skillset, frame, and athleticism will be in high demand at the next level. Very nice pickup.
10/23/2018 - 4:44pm I think MSU will still win…

I think MSU will still win roughly 1/3 games as long as Dantonio is there.

Also, on the UM side, we may see some of our staffers start to move up. Zordich, Partridge, and JayBaugh could be coordinator candidates elsewhere within the next few years.

10/07/2018 - 11:48am According to college…

According to college football reference, Shea Patterson is at 9.1 adjusted Y/A. That is the best number in Michigan history by nearly a full yard (among quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts). Jim Harbaugh is 2nd with 8.2.

09/21/2018 - 2:08pm My interpretation of the ref…

My interpretation of the ref pushing Devin Bush: Bush had some sort of non-helmet related equipment error. Per the rules, such equipment errors do not warrant stopping plays, so the ref is instructed to tell the player to leave the field to correct the equipment issue. Bush refused due to the quick snap. The only tool the ref has to enforce the rule is to call an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which everyone would see as excessive. I think we'll probably see a rule change giving refs the power to stop play and/or force the substitution.

09/15/2018 - 9:05pm This may come as a surprise…

This may come as a surprise to some, but college quarterbacks are pretty damn good at throwing a football. You have to pressure and confuse them. Don Brown's defense does a lot of the first but not much of the second. And when the pressure doesn't come home, you get all those "perfect" throws.

This space has consistently rated Winovich better than Gary. Gary gets more NFL hype but give me Winovich all day at the college level

Maybe that's a Bredeson thing not a coach thing. Someone on the board mentioned Wheatley refused to play OT...

I don't think Fisch was any better than average as a college OC. We've just been awful since.

Ok, so what did offenses do in 2017 that they couldn't do in 2016 when Peppers was the viper?

McDaniels looks really good, but "McDaniels would be my #1 propsect in the country" doesn't jive with "The kid has the look of a potential lottery pick in a few years." #1 prospect in the country in my mind is a sure-fire one and done top 10 pick.

I've always been curious -what unites alumni at a school like U of Chicago 10+ years down the road? Seems like sports is the major factor at Michigan to bring people together. What happens with alums of schools that don't have that?

05/02/2018 - 3:04pm I think it's the magnitude of error that's

I think it's the magnitude of error that's troubling. Nussmeier's offenses at Alabama were ranked 7 and 9 according to S&P (and won a national title in year 1). OSU still went 12-1 in 2015.

What's behind Loyola's success this year? I don't think it's a Porter Moser thing. He's been a head coach for 14 years and this was the first time he was any better than 5th in his conference. They even lost their best player from last year and vastly improved as a team.

Meh they played the chalk seeds (16, 8, 4, 2) until the final four when they got to play 8 seed Wisconsin and 5 seed Florida. The chaos might have helped them win the title but they got to the Final Four in the toughest path they could've faced.

Yea as noted we've moneyballed defense by preventing offensive rebounds, 3 pointers, and transition. We still have some weaknesses one on one and no shotblocking when Wagner is on the floor. A team like UNC may be able to take advantage. Maye went off last time we played. I'd expect us to defend Berry better with Simpson instead of Brooks, but they were also missing starter Cam Johnson.

Hidden in Purdue's numbers is the fact that their defense has faltered as of late. Adjusted defensive efficiency of 101.6 since Feb 1. That's worse than every other top 4 seed other than Wichita State In the same timeframe. I don't see them faring well in the tourney.

03/09/2018 - 8:53am Who's the best defensive point guard we've played

Who's the best defensive point guard we've played this year? I'm worried about a team that can stop Z from getting into the paint with ease.
