Defunct Michigan Blogs Comment Count

Seth

Yo this is going to be some #content right here, since I don’t have time for nothing else. I was going through our lists in preparation to transfer the tertiary things to the new site (don’t ask) and this reminded me it had been a long time since we cleaned up the links on the sidebar.

I’ve done so, but it hurt to remove some old bookmarks I used to check every day. So they don’t all just get summarily dumped, I figured a thread in tribute to some great Michigan writing during the formative years of blogging was in order. If you joined the sphere too late for the age when 20-something Michigan fans all had blogspots and tried to invent our own shticks so as to not come off as LiveJournals, some of them are worth going back and reading.

A top three:

Burgeoning Wolverine Star

image

An X’s and O’s Michigan blog. Chris Gaerig is one of those guys I keep meaning to contact about writing for HTTV sometime because he was a fantastic writer as well as a deep thinker about specific Michigan plays. His posts used to get linked regularly in UFRs. Neck Sharpies exists because I set out myself to fill some of the void he left. Also: basketball.

The Blog That Yost Built

There are two types of MGoBlog readers: those who think we have too much hockey, and those who think it’s awful how little we cover hockey. Tim Williams started his site because we didn’t have enough hockey coverage at MGoBlog and if he still had time to write he’d be a regular here, since we’re all among the former as well.

Ronald Bellamy’s Underachieving All-Stars

Though he has a far better writing gig these days, I still think of him as Johnny RBUAS. If you have ever wanted to feel very emotional about a beloved Michigan player’s fictionalized stream of consciousness, this site was for you. If you haven’t, really that’s okay, I won’t curl up in a ball and cry, unless Johnny RBUAS writes about it. Bonus: the url was umichedme dot blogspot.

Others I remember and don’t:

  • The Ace of Sports—His name was Ace (actually Harry), and he liked M and Detroit sports. Get it?
  • Autumn Thunder—The half-assed Michigan blog. MS Paint, Hart, and more Hart. Still occasionally useful, though some of his best work has grown outdated.
  • Bitter Rivals—Short-lived M v MSU site, beat Mike Hart to the fraternal metaphor.
  • Blah Blah Blah—2008 was not the year to start blogging about Michigan.
  • Hokeamaniac—That didn’t last.
  • In Rod We Trust—That didn’t last either.
  • Maize Wings—Very late to the very late-‘00s blogging party
  • MGoBlue Football
  • MGoSwim
  • Michigan Football Recruiting—Guy I grew up with made a crootin site.
  • Michigan Football Saturdays—Dedicated blogger in the era of everyone had a blog
  • Michigan Hockey Net—Covered M hockey, Red Wings
  • MMMGoBlueBBQ—Joe Pichey wrote for himself before he wrote for us.
  • Stadium & Main
  • The Diag—MLive tried to have a blog
  • The Game—Can’t think why a M fan wouldn’t want to post daily about the M-OSU rivalry anymore.
  • The M Zone—Humor site, now a worthy follow.
  • The Michigan Faithful
  • The Wolverine Blog
  • Three And Out
  • UMGoBlog—Annoyingly, would get our traffic. Annoyingly, UMGoBlue.com took his twitter handle.
  • Victors Valiant—Had useful previews.
  • When Carcajous Attack!—Used to have some great previews, joined Maize ‘n Brew for a time.
  • Wolverine Liberation Army—Only the unicorns remain of the once proud proletariat
  • Wolverines Daily

What did I miss? What do you miss?

Michigan Hockey Net's original incarnation Michigan Hockey Rules! dates back to 1997 on Geocities.  I imagine many these days have no idea what Geocities is and how big Geocities was back in the day.  I don't remember exactly off hand when I made the switch to my own domain.  Always tried to stay on top of the news and game recaps, but also incorporating features such as archiving The Red Berenson Show (when WTKA wasn't able to in those days), posting video highlights (in the days before YouTube), CoverItLive live blogs (believe I was the first to do this when I attended a game in the Soo), getting threatened to be sued by Paula Weston (true story), and helping open the door for blogs to get credentials to Michigan athletic events (major THANK YOU to former hockey SID Matt Trevor for that).  It was a good run while it lasted but life took over and now I'm a Florida Man.

I used to be addicted to MGoRecruit, which you already listed. I was really sad when Benji stopped doing his updates because I didn't know any other sites at the time.

if you haven't you guys should really go read through his archives... it was fortunate for all of us that his peak activity was really when our boys were most recently at their highest point, so as a bit of a tribute I'll make it easy on you and give you a link to the Eulogy of that time: http://umichedme.blogspot.com/2007/11/

it's just a taste though... in this down-time of content, that's a great place to mine some memories of seasons past...

Brian Cook and Johnny RBUAS were two amazing writers who helped me save my fandom. I was on a lonely island in the far reaches of the country, and those two, along with iBlogforCookies, helped save me. Their prose is unequaled.

Such memories, some going back 13 years...

He was way too Mitch Album-y for me. Create his own narrative and then write a story around it regardless of any factual evidence. Fine if you're a fiction author but not what I'm looking for in a sports writer. Plus he wrote a super whiny emo post about how he just didnt know if he would support Michigan any more during the Richrod error.

I still chuckle to this day the time WLA referred to Mangus's blog as Touch the boner.  Apologies, my humor can be adolescent.  (And I'm a regular TTB reader.)

Genuinely sarcastic was an RBUAS-esque column-oriented blog Michigan Sport Center was run by Sean Yuille back in the day before moved full time to work on Pride of Detroit (which has become the Lions SBNation blog)

I have two not represented here. One of them was just mentioned by pasadenablue - Michigan Sports Center.

The other was one of the originals out there, I think - Vijay from i Blog for Cookies.

Otherwise, you got the dozen or two I used to follow at various points.

I was an M-Zone, Blog That Yost Built, then Wolverine Liberation Army/Ron Bellamy's Underachieving All-Stars (seems like both kind of ghosted for long lengths of time) guy back in the formative years.

Anyone else remember hammering Mike DeSimone's website for content during game weeks? Those little tiny pictures that seemed so, so valuable...

Glad you did this!

I still go over to the sidebar and re-visit those links to bring back memories from time to time.

I'll miss doing that, but I still can't wait for the new site!

Back then (obviously judging by my join date to the left), I was just a lurker and never made an account. I wish I did and read even more and fully immersed myself in what a fun time this site and so many others were.

I miss those days. As someone who first dipped his toe into the blogging scene before jumping in up to my neck, most of these sites were not only daily must-reads, many were helpful compatriots in the goal of writing more, writing better, writing for an audience (ideally).

Now: No time to write, very few blogs to link (those who remain extant don't need it anyway), and even harder to build up an audience. C'est la vie.

Thanks for the memories!

That's where I came from as well. I couldn't for th life of me remember the name of the site though. I got there after we lost to in the Alamo Bowl in 2005. I was so done with Carr at that point I went looking for a place to vent. That place saw me through the Horror and the first year of RR. What I liked was that there were several OSU fans so the banter kept us sharp, plus they did contests with some cool sports memorablia. That said, when the end came I too made the move here although I had been lurking for awhile. The banter here has always been different so I don't post as much as I just read. But as early as 2008 this was my go to site for inofrmation.

I've always assumed it was by Brice Marich who has obviously gone on to bigger and better things.  I enjoyed it since it was clearly an earnest attempt by a young fan to put his passion to work.

Written by someone who obviously loved the hire. I thought he gave a good defense of Rich, though obviously in retropsect it was a bad hire.

Started many years ago, (Drew Henson playing days era) there and was a small community of people that left Rivals.  The site was run by a poster from Wisconsin that went by "BlueCheeseHead"  They had a lot of interesting chatter over there and characters. "Apu" typed in using an accent that was not his own. There were a few females (one was kauaigirl) that was quite knowledgeable and provided a lot of recruiting insite as she was friends with Sam Webb (before Sam left Rivals).

Haven't beent there since "Apu" left, but it was a nice place to visit.

I remember towards the end of the mlive forums (now all disbanded) that people in there started their own forum because they were sick of the Sparty troll Azfootbballfan . Lol
