the more liberal redshirting rules for freshmen make roster management interesting -- if more redshirts are granted and stay the full five years (i know this is not a given here w/ JH's policy) then there will be smaller recruiting classes at schools that take advantage of the rule.

Kind of ironic that I just watched the Graduate on TV a couple of nights ago. "Are you trying to seduce me, Mr. Saban?" comes to mind. Kid probably had every intention of sticking with his Michigan commitment but allowed himself to be sucked into a situation where he had them whispering in his ear the last few months. I thought this one was pretty safe to be honest w/ Chris Partridge as the led recruiter. Maybe bama went at this one extra hard to punish CP for turning his back on them last year.

Real punishment for cheaters
Limited TV timeouts
Fewer bowl games
I think the playoff is fine as is. If we expand to > teams we should have a prohibition on 2 loss teams (unless scheduling gets tougher). Maybe go to 6 - all P5 plus one indy / Group of 5. Eight seems too many - like rewarding mediocrity.
No games against FCS teams allowed
P5 teams only allowed 1 non-P5 non conference game and all must play 1 road P5 non conference game (yes - I am looking at you Bama)
5th year eligibility for grad students only
MSU out of the B1G (note that Michigan has won a grand total of ONE natty since Sparty joined the conference - there isn't enough talent in the state to support two B1G programs so they have to go)
All games played on real grass

I was at a stadium recently (Alabama) where they don't run off media time outs on the stadium scoreboard so they make the red hat guy hold a stick w/ an electronic countdown board on it. The guys looked pretty pathetic holding the board which I though was an appropriate punishment for the 2 minute and 30 second stoppages.

I like Tru WIlson's willingness to block, but I am concerned that he is too "handsy". I both the first clip and on the DPJ TD he clearly has his arms around the defenders body.
|10/04/2018 - 1:23pm||I was actually at that game…||
I was actually at that game. At no point were there any more than 60k people in a stadium that fits 100k fans. It's kind of like the Braves experienced when they won the NL east for like 12 years in a row earlier in the decade and could not sell out NLDS payoff games. Here's some advice for Mr. Saban: stop scheduling glorified high school teams and maybe people will come to / stay at your games.
A couple of random thoughts on the experience while I am at it since it is always fun to view another school's traditions as an outsider:
The tailgating setup on the diag, which is a massive tree lined space on campus, was really really nice.
Having the stadium on campus - just a block off the diag - was a real plus and really added to the game day experience. The stadium itself is nice enough but they need new video boards. The current ones are like the first set we had at Michigan in terms of size and quality. There are four - one in each corner of the stadium. I hear they are installing a jumbo jumbo screen for next season. it will be interesting to see how they configure it since the stadium is a bowl so I assume they are taking out seats.
The "elephant stomp", which is basically a pep rally held on the steps of the library on the diag where the band plays the fight song and other traditional songs was very impressive. After that, the band kind of just walks over the stadium which was strange.
We attended the walk of champions" which is the team walking from the buses to the stadium. Saban had his full grim game face on even though they were playing an obvious patsy
Damien Harris is really an amazing physical specimin. He walked right past us at the walk of champions. On a related note, it was kind of sad seeing Najee Harris fight for scraps in garbage time as the third string running back.
Bama's song at the start of the fourth quarter is the band playing Green Day's Basket Case with the fans waving four fingers. The song has a great energy and (now don't shoot me) I prefer it to the song that we prance around to in the Big House.
All of their goings on during breaks - field goal kicking for prizes, family of the game, etc - are basically just tacky commercials sponsored by the local car dealer or feed and grain store. Did not seem fitting for a national power.
Big Al, the elephant mascot, is a pretty big deal. Well conceived and definitly a rallying point for the student an fans. I am not really in favor of a mascot at Michigan, but Big Al works for them.
They do not put the commercial break time on the scoreboards. Instead they make the TV time out guy hold a board on a stick (which he turns around for all to see) with a countdown clock on it. I think this is sweet justice that I would love to see us do to the evil little man in the red hat.
The game was ho hum so we spent a lot of time sitting. However, I am told that for SEC games fans basically stand throughout the game. I have witnessed that at another SEC stadium that I have attended games at. This is definitely in stark contrast to my 25+ year experience at the Big House.
The student section seems about the same as ours -- no better, no worse. The arrived slightly late, left slightly early and made more than their fair share of noise when they needed to.
Overall, it was a great experience but I really need to get back down there for an SEC game.

This is all interesting to me since I have not had the away game experience at Iowa. What I have had is the home game experience against Iowa. What is notable about that is that in 30 years of attending M home football games I have seen exactly 2 fights in the stands (not pushing and shoving but real fights involving some pretty vicious punching) and both involving Iowa fans mixing it up w/ M fans. Not ND, not Sparty, not PSU, and not OSU, but rather Iowa.

|08/19/2018 - 7:35pm||Trust me. I know what I am…||
Trust me. I know what I am talking about from several years of first hand experience.
High level travel baseball teams practice 2 to 3 times a week and play in tournaments every weekend. If the kids play in an organized travel league (which many do) on top of that they are easily playing ball 5 to 6 days a week which leaves no time for little league. And yes, it does start getting that intense at 11-12 years old or even earlier (and no, the coaches don't typically give a crap that you are playing for your local little league).
My son tried to do both for a year and it didn't work due to the intensity of his travel schedule.
My daughter, who is a pitcher, has done it in softball for a few years in order to get her innings in early and build her arm strength ahead of the travel tournament season bc little league tends to start games a few weeks earlier than travel ball. The extra work was important to her since in travel pitchers can easily be asked to throw 20+ innings on tournament elimination day. I know it's softball but the same principle and scheduling applies.
|08/19/2018 - 12:11pm||In Michigan (and many other…||
In Michigan (and many other places) you are 100% correct. If they want to show the best 12 year old ball players they should show the end of summer champions tourney from Cooperstown. Cooperstown dream part puts on an amazing string of tournaments all summer long. Used to be 80 teams a week (may be more now) from all over the country on an invitation only basis with the winners of each week's tournament coming back at the end of the summer for a "best of the best" tournament.
One of the big differences between high level travel ball and little league is the mound is 50 feet + vs. 45 feet for little league which evens it out between pitchers and batters.
