If his goal is to end up…

If his goal is to end up with a well-paying career (not just a job), he should focus on building relationships and trying new things in college.  Establish a strong network at Michigan, make friends, and learn stuff.  He needs to learn about himself.  What is good at?  Where does he struggle?  What comes easily?  What does he hate to do?  From there, he can narrow down an eventual career search.

But much like the coaches encourage aspiring football players to play a bunch of different sports and build their athleticism, encourage your young friend to take a bunch of interesting classes, meet people, learn a lot, build connections, and grow as a well-rounded human.

And get a side gig or low-impact job in the short term to generate some extra cash to make the daily struggle a bit less painful.

I wouldn't put too much…

I wouldn't put too much stock into the Niners-Rams game in week 18 - neither team played their starting QBs in an otherwise meaningless game (both teams had clinched playoff spots/seeding).

I figure my username is…

I figure my username is relevant here!  I spent four years at Caltech in Pasadena (many years ago), and this is what I remember...

  • Zankou Chicken - the best Lebanese food I've had outside of Dearborn.  The roast chicken is great, but the tri-tip shawarma plate still haunts my memories.  If I could have one last meal in Pasadena, it would be the #10 from Zankou.
  • Pie n Burger - exactly what the name implies.  Really good burgers and really good pies.
  • Lake St between Colorado and California has all of the fast-casual places you could ever want.  Paseo mall has slightly more upscale chain restaurants (like Yardhouse)
  • Old Pasadena is the closest major restaurant/bar area to the stadium and has plenty of spots.  Old Towne Pub is a good choice.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO YOSHINOYA BEEF BOWL.

Can affirm that bluesky is a much nicer place to be than the old bird app.  It lacks some features, but the user experience, from both the community and UI standpoints, reminds me of said bird app from 8-12 years ago.  I like it.  Plus, there's a growing contingent of Michigan and CFB folks there which should be clutch once the season gets into swing.

Kraken season ticket holder here...

As excellent as Matty's numbers are, they don't tell the full story of his impact.  He's already the star of the team - a fan favorite who gets the biggest cheers.  As a 20-yr old, he plays a complete 200-ft game at the NHL level, against grown-ass men.  Excellent defensively and is always buzzing around the puck.  He's a major catalyst for Seattle's offensive turnaround this season.  The Kraken wouldn't be pushing for a playoff spot without him.

I'd be shocked if he isn't named captain in the next year or so.

Agreed.  Tom Mars is the best there is when it comes to litigation for NCAA athletes.  The MSU players who perpetrated this heinous act of violence suddenly have much bigger things to worry about than a suspension.

The choice between blue or…

The choice between blue or maize pants is a nice way to avoid matching an opponent's colors, e.g. blue last week against an Iowa team with lots of yellow or maize when we play at Penn St.

The maize should absolutely be the default in cases like this week where there's no color conflict.

I could honestly use some…

I could really use some suggestions from other folks who have large feet.  I wear a 14/14.5.  Macy's (and pretty much any store not named Nordstroms) only goes up to 13.  I often have to buy online and hope that the fit works.

Any recommendations on brands/vendors?

I have a reserved table at the front corner of the restaurant (where 2nd and Battery meet).  I'm there just about every game when there isn't a global pandemic (exceptions made for trips back to Michigan to watch the game in person, or the occasional heathenous gameday wedding).  More often than not, I'll be the one banging the cowbell after scores.  Come stop by if you're around on gameday (hoping that the vaccine distribution allows for that to be starting this September).

What up Snoqualmie!  I'm…

What up Snoqualmie!  I'm over by the Sculpture Park, a few blocks from Seattle Center.  I'm a fixture at Buckley's in Belltown for games during normal seasons.  Do you stay on the Eastside to watch?

Going outside more to boost…

Going outside more to boost your immune system, but not masking up, isolating, and limiting social interactions diligently is like drinking diet coke to lose weight while eating four Big Macs at each meal - you're still gonna have issues.  The impacts of isolating, masking, and hand washing far outweigh most other factors.  Plus, we're still going outside - gotta walk the dog, grab groceries, etc.  We're just being way more careful about it.

And yes, city environments have a higher concentration of cases due to having a high concentration of people.  But the per capita rate of incidence is highest in some of the most rural states in the US (looking at you Dakotas).

Seattle resident here - not…

Seattle resident here - not surprised at the least.

  1. The city and state governments actually believe in science, and have put in place the proper guidance and restrictions
  2. Residents are generally well-educated, meaning they also believe in science and understand the need for the restrictions
  3. The weather during the fall/winter sucks anyways, so shit, might as well stay home, play some Xbox, and chill where it's dry
  4. Seattlites are pretty unsocial by nature, so the pandemic has been a great excuse for everyone to continue the freeze.

Overcooked/Overcooked 2 - co-op cooking game that may end up with you screaming at everyone around you.  But tons of fun once you get it right.

Any cartoony racing game, e.g. Team Sonic Racing - like Mario Kart, but with Sonic characters

Any of the SkyForce games - vertical shoot-em up.  Good clean fun for any age.

As a person of color, I'm with you here.  I would NOT want to live in the USA before 1980.  And I wouldn't want to live without modern medicine, so going back to pre-Industrial revolution societies, before colonialism, would also be miserable.

Agreed.  A healthy Tua could fetch at least a pair of first rounders, probably more.

But some team is going to be enamored with Justin Hebert even (maybe especially?) if Tua's bill of health isn't clean.  Remember the haul that San Francisco got just for moving down one spot when Chicago picked Trubisky?  With the big dropoff in QB talent after the big 3 (Burrow, Tua, Hebert), someone is gonna overpay.

Bob Quinn's job is going to hinge on a) the pick (if the Lions keep it)/return on the pick if traded, b) who the Lions take with the extra picks.

I'd be a fan of trading the pick to a team in desperate need of a QB, and picking up extra picks.  The Lions need talent in both quality and volume, and are actually pretty good at the QB position, as long as Stafford stays healthy.  Trade down, grab an edge rusher and a DB early, and shore up O-line and D-line depth.  The RB and WR positions are actually okay.  Build from the two lines out (the team's biggest weaknesses since forever).

T-Mobile

I live in a big city, so I never have coverage issues. The pricing and lack of early termination fees were big plus points.  I also travel internationally at least once a year, so having FREE data and text while overseas is huge.  No SIM-swapping or anything - just turn roaming on and your phone will connect to the local Tmobile telecom partner - speeds are relatively slow, so no Netflix, but maps/email/whatsapp/etc all work like a charm.  Customer service has also been excellent whenever I've gone into a store or called them up.
