[Meta] Why are users with -800 points allowed to even comment?

Submitted by McDoomButt on

I'm really tired of these racist trolls peppering comments throughout every goddamn post.

Can we just make it so users with -100 MGoPoints or worse automatically cannot comment? And then maybe in the weird case where this was undeserved, they can be restored by the mods?

I am guilty of replying. But every time I do he/she just responds with the same schtick, so it just adds fuel to the fire. I guess if you have the mindset that being a troll is fun, you're already sort of fucked in the head. Having someone named Marvin tell you politely to stop isn't going to change that.

If they are unable to comment, then they would not be able to redeem points and get back in the positive.  This would just push them to create a new user name.

Yes, they would have to create a new username every time they wanted to comment. Make it as difficult and annoying for them as possible.

And if you get a dozen new registrations for racist trolls from the same IP address, then you could in theory hit that IP with a hammer. Could they then spoof another IP address? Sure, but at this point I think a vast majority of these idiots would give up.

No, who cares. If people don't respond to trolls then they'll eventually go away. Mgoblog has some of the most thin-skinned people around. Just pay em no mind, these trolls are like leeches. Don't give them blood, they will die...

Since we've figured out who it is, the problem is  clear. This person wants a negative response to force structural changes, so they keep upping the annoyance ante. We then get the racism, the posting first in every thread, the posting nonstop. It becomes impossible to ignore, which is the whole point.

I don't think it's fair to say that we "know" who the culprit is. Many suspect, but a lot of suspicion comes from people predisposed to dislike their suspect anyway.

I have stated that I consider the scenario plausible; perhaps even likely. But there are other people who may have beefs with the board who may be abusing it, and the pattern began almost at the same time as a different user got caved, barely to return.

It's worth noting that is the "scenario" we suspect is indeed the case, it is idiotic; but it did start with a pretty awful series of abusive accounts directed at the person who is now the perp. An immature response does not justify an immature provocation.

If "the person who is now the perp" is the person whom many are attributing these troll-like accounts to, it should be noted that that person through their twitter account professes to be of a religious denomination - before admitting to being a Michigan Wolverine fanatic - one of whose basic tenets is, "turn the other cheek." Throwing a three-months long (or longer?) hissy fit in anger over site moderation practices while engaging in virulent racial stereotypes suggests to me that this person, at the very least, needs to perform an examination of conscience and seek forgiveness.

If I'm wrong about who the person who is now the perp is, I apologize.

"On the other hand, if the perp is irreligious, it won't be the first time an irreligious person will have turned out to be have been doing horrible things. Stalin didn't go to church either."

See how idiotic that sounds? 1. To make it an issue of religion. 2. To equate internet trolling to systematic sexual abuse.

C'mon, man, do better.

that's not the point. It was implied that, as a religious person (apparently assumed via twitter) that somehoe he should hold himself to that higher standard.

the guy being or not being religious should have no bearing on his character or ability to redeem himself here at all. he could be the fucking pope and I wouldn't think anything more of him re: this bullshit that's been happening here lately.

"On the other hand, if the perp has a mustache, it won't be the first time an mustacheoed person will have turned out to be have been doing horrible things."

of course it's idiotic. that's my point

Don’t be too defensive. The guy didn’t claim religious people have a monopoly on bad behavior, or even that religious people tend to behave badly. Nor that irreligious people tend to behave better. And to be fair, irreligious people who do bad things generally aren’t remembered as much as the religious, because of the inherent hypocrisy. Because they don’t live under the same injunctions that the religious do.

The website gets updated, and you don't feed the trolls.

I for one would appreciate posts complaining about posts posters and all lead to a banning. Everyone gets a  ban.

Why not just lump in all people who consistently make political statements, Left or Right (I'm looking at you FauxMo). I came here for Michigan sports news, not CNN shit or Breitbart shit

Note: this is a news comment, not a political comment:

In my opinion CNN jumped the shark from being a news organization a long time ago. Somehow they decided to take the agenda themed strategy from Fox, and fill the day with "breaking news" editorial round table discussion. What is discussed may be vetted with a news level of veracity better than others, but they have come a long way from the news reporting agency they used to be (e.g., during the first Gulf War) - especially Headline News - all in the name of ratings. To me, this is a big reason they are being challenged.

In my view all the cable news channels have become equally unwatchable, because you have to gleen the actual factual news out of the endless editorial discussion of opinions on "the news channel".

Of course what do I know - to me news should be like old school Walter Cronkite news, where the news is presented and there may be an editorial short as part of the broadcast.

Ok, this is vaguely political - before 45 CNN was thought of as just another MSM news outlet, nothing too overtly political. Certainly NOT the representing the "left" to Breitbart's "right"!

But it's indicative of how far to the right the bar has been moved now that anyone but the pres & his most ardent followers would ever consider CNN as some sort of mouthpiece of the left!

Pretty sure they're NOT Bernie Sanders' go-to for political commentary!
Now, carry on banning people!
