[Meta] Why are users with -800 points allowed to even comment?

Submitted by McDoomButt on

I'm really tired of these racist trolls peppering comments throughout every goddamn post.

Can we just make it so users with -100 MGoPoints or worse automatically cannot comment? And then maybe in the weird case where this was undeserved, they can be restored by the mods?

The OP's point is a good one.  What's the point of self-policing if the policing doesn't mean anything?  Obvious trolls or extremely offensive comments should be cause for immediate ban.

Also, it should take more like 500 or 1,000 points to start a thread.

Posters who start ridiculous threads should either have posting rights revoked or be put on probation.  Didn't check the board before you posted the same info that was up 3 hours ago?  You've lost your right post for a month.  Keep commenting if you want.

I'd volunteer to help clean up the rabble, and I'm sure other reliable posters would too.

I think 1000 is a reasonable amount considering the POSBANG upvotes without adding anything meaningful.  That's not to say all of my comments are massively insightful, but would keep the riff raff out; or at least make them earn it!

"Self-policing" doesn't do shit. Ignoring the trolls doesn't actually reduce their trash. The glut of troll posts and threads makes it more difficult to do what we come here to do...discuss Michigan sports and absorb content.

Points have nothing to do with comments. Got to crawl before you walk. U started out with 1. Now you're big time

Been a memeber for a while. Love the site, can't stand the comment section these days. If there is a way to stop it, get it done.  If phone numbers wor, you can have mine.  Talk to you all again in 1/2 a year...

The irony in this lies in the fact that this itself is a garbage post.

If you don’t like a particular post or comment just ignore it. If there is no reaction, the comments will stop.

There's something cosmicly correct about granting the opportunity to change and begin to slowly redeem yourself, but at the risk of staying the same and being further eviscerated.

I've seen about a dozen posts about banning IPs.

This reply is especially for the people arguing about banning IPs.

Banning IPs will do nothing.

Arguing about the merits of free v. pay VPNs is 1,000 times more foolish.

Just stop.

You're embarrassing yourselves.

Rock bottom for me lol? Man you might want to look up the definition. What do you call a person who trolls a webpage for months at a time? I am not even trying to be mean but it's kind of lame. Good luck to you tho I hope you find the help you need and hopefully somebody will eventually love u. U do realize that you only bother like 10-20 people and the other thousands of people on here could give 2 shits. Happy trolling tho lol.

But have you actually read the paid boards? they are pure, unadulterated, trash. Brian would be better off creating a different, secret, free site that only mgoinsiders know about; and then creating another one at the necessary time. oh shit, has this already happened and I just don't know about it?

Can someone clue me in on how the point system works? Just curious. Is it based on someone pushing a button if they like your comment? If that is the system then how is someone going to get over 800 points if you can’t comment?
I’m not an expert or anything but I’ve seen some great comments and info from people who don’t have a crapload off points as well as a lot of points. I’ve also seen people with a ton of points make terrible or ridiculous comments, but that is my opinion right..isn’t that the point this is a blog, you either agree with an opinion, don’t agree with it or u just move on. Anyway..GoBlue!

that should be a feature in the new site along with PM'ing.

Here is the post...

I honestly don't mind the shtickers.  It reminds me of the bar that is blogging.  I honestly post stuff I would never say to someone's face.  If my personal data were widely available it would change what and how I post.

I prefer the freedom of open discussion and tolerate those who offend.  If racism and isms in general weren't such a real and present danger... it wouldn't be no big thing.  But ... alas ... it is.

Thanks to BlockM for writing this extension.  If we all used it or something like it and just didn't respond to the user ... they would go away.

Please add filtering and PMs to the new site... please.
