[Meta] Why are users with -800 points allowed to even comment?

Submitted by McDoomButt on

I'm really tired of these racist trolls peppering comments throughout every goddamn post.

Can we just make it so users with -100 MGoPoints or worse automatically cannot comment? And then maybe in the weird case where this was undeserved, they can be restored by the mods?

The point of negative points is to not be able to start threads. So, users who have been sent to Bolivia (Me) will never be able regain the point total to be able to start threads. But, I do value my privilege of being able to post my opinion in the comments.

Actually metadata is just one example of applying the "meta" prefix to indicate a level of abstraction above something (in this case data).  There's also such a thing as a metatheory (a theoriy about theories), metaphilosophy (a philosophy on how to philosophize), etc.  I suppose this would be a metapost: a post about posting.

The earliest use of the prefix that I know of is in metaphysics, but I don't know if that is where the usage originated.

I just figured out what "meta" and "siap" mean; please tell me what "IBD" is now! Also I'm stumped on "NTTAWWT", "NTM", or "YTM", "tOSU", "AIDS", "USSR" and "HIPAA" amongst others, in case any of you are in the mood to help me out.

They'd just make a new account every time they reached whatever the threshold is.

IP bans dont work, it's very easy to change the IP the website sees.

In short, there's no way to stop these people from posting.

How the hell else are we supposed to get back black for MGoPoints?

I have the distinction of being negbombed for sarcastically posting that we should hire Brady Hoke after Harbaugh lost a game. It was even tagged "/s". Some people are born for the neg life, others find the neg life thrust upon them.

MGoPoints and cash are pretty much interchangeable at a 1:1 rate. That is what the beveled guilt button is for.

But every once in the while MGoBlog has a sale and you would get a better rate. I think the next one is President's Day, when everyone else has their white sales. Wait until then, save a little bit of cash and for a few thousand bucks and your points will be golden (well, back in the black, anyway).

I think any form of verification for new accounts that is strong enough to be effective has the potential to choke off regular new users that this board would do well to attract.

If this is one person (or two people each playing their game of scorning the board) the best solution might be to have Brian use his documented abilities to sniff out IP addresses, give the person a warning, and then if they fail to halt the activity, unmask them publicly.

if you can triangulate who it is - create a post listing name and home town, and all the aliases, and then tweet out a public shaming linking to the post.

People behave better when they know there are consequnces, and in this case banning, Bolivia and point bashing isn't enough.

If this site posted his personal information especially his name and home address I think this site might possibly not exist much longer after that. These people who troll on here I guess annoy the shit out of some but giving out personal info could lead to something even crazier yet. Imagine 1 of the people who are mad at whoever the hell is doing this gets him home address and they live right down the street. I think that would open this site up to some pretty serious legal issues. Just IP ban them it's 1,000x easier and very few people know how to get around it.

Immediately, but if I knew where one lived, I’m not above shenanigans and tomfoolery. If neither of those avenues solve the issue, then perhaps I’ll tie the little fucker to his bed and set fire to the house. Allegedly and with all due respect, fully invoking my protections under the Geneva convention. I take the 5th, mission accomplished.

This site is confusing at times...guys like Yost get nuked for posting about Pep & Drevno(actual football content), yet Franklin Hatchett was posting for weeks before he finally got kicked off.

can't we just ignore the trolls until they go away?

at some point it can't be fun for them anymore.  obviously the offensive faux colloquial text speak language needs to stop.  that schtick gets old real fast.

Yet some of the most informative posters are not posting much anymore and i think that is a shame.  Mr. Yost, Space Coyote, and a few others who bring good insight even if you disagree with them have not been posting much if at all anymore.  disagreeing is great for advancing  the conversation as long as we all remain civil with one another and realize we all want the best for Michigan.
