10/16/2018 - 10:26am And if I read the transcript…

And if I read the transcript correctly she tried to clarify that her question about Mason wasn't really an injury one--she noted that he seemed to play less (or have a smaller role), and she wondered if that was game strategy or injury. I guess without that question she couldn't know if the topic was off limits or not. At that point Harbaugh said that he also didn't want to answer game-plan questions.

10/16/2018 - 10:22am Good lord that statement is…

Good lord that statement is so stupid it boggles the mind. We could come up with a list of hundreds of important stories written by "sports journalists" over the years. And the general idea that "sports" occur in some sort of vacuum disconnected from economics, race, gender, law, etc. is crazy. Just look at the fact that today is the fiftieth anniversary of John Carlos and Tommie Smith at Mexico City. Yep, that was really just about a couple of guys who could run fast.

10/16/2018 - 10:10am I don't understand the…

I don't understand the general hostility toward Chengelis on this thread. For one thing, it is her job to ask these questions. Obviously people read her stories and tweets based on her reporting, so the fan base is interested in these topics. And while coaches will often brush off these questions, sometimes they elicit useful or interesting information--someone mentioned below that Harbaugh did reveal something about play-calling duties.

And perhaps I'm reading too much into some of the comments, but it also seems like some people think that Harbaugh shouldn't have to go in front of the press and answer any pesky questions. I have a problem with that--we know that there is a major problem in college athletics with programs that are immune to oversight. Having reporters scrutinize a program is one check on potential abuses. In this case Chengelis is asking about injuries, which obviously is not part of any kind of systematic abuse in the program. But when we start to discount the role of these reporters and argue that the coach and the program shouldn't have to face tough questions I worry a little bit about the precedents we are creating. I know that's probably really alarmist, but it makes me reluctant to criticize a journalist for asking unpopular questions.

God I hope you are kidding.

Yeah--looked like he might get caught for a short gain on that keeper but then he just accelerated down the sideline. He was pulling away as he got near the end zone. That was impressive.

Uhh, looked pretty good. About to post this same great insight in the Defense thread.

Yes, I really question the work ethic of our D-1 athletes.

I'm not going to pretend like I understand all of this diary, but I like it anyway.

09/27/2018 - 11:10am Yeah, I don't think that's…

Yeah, I don't think that's in dispute--this is meant to refer to the upcoming game against Penn State. But FauxMo's point is that the marketing geniuses in Columbus perhaps shouldn't have created an image prominently featuring the word that many people have used to describe OSU's response to problems on their coaching staff.

And they had so many other options! They could have used a gif of their QB looking at one WR and then checking down to a secondary receiver with the caption "Look the Other Way."

I was scrutinizing this picture trying to find the bear--then I thought maybe it was bear helmet stickers, which would actually be pretty good.

Contemptible! That's a pretty strong word. I mean, I don't see this as inflicting some enormous cost on his team. It sounds like he's not really playing that much, so it's not like he's sinking their chances for success. I guess I don't have a problem with a kid looking out for his own interests, especially if it is not materially hurting someone else in any meaningful way.

ETA: closer read indicates that it's not a lack of playing time per se. Still doesn't change my opinion: kid is looking out for his own interests, which I think is entirely reasonable.

09/19/2018 - 9:17am Oops--my bad. You can bring…

Oops--my bad. You can bring in unopened, sealed water bottles, but you can also bring in empty "sport" water bottles (the non-disposable kind). That's what we did. So actually multiple good options at Target Field.

The suggestion to get an IV before the game makes me think that this could be satire, but actually I'm pretty sure it's not. Nanny state!

09/17/2018 - 8:55pm Yep. I went to a game at…

Yep. I went to a game at Target Field in Minneapolis earlier this year and the policy was that you could bring an empty water bottle and fill it at filling stations throughout the stadium. It was a hot day, so they also had some of those huge orange Gatorade water dispensers at various spots throughout the stadium. At Fenway we brought in sealed water bottles and then I filled them at drinking fountains. (Of course, being super run down--er, "quaint and historic"--means very few drinking fountains and apparently no modern filling stations.)

Absurd that they couldn't come up with a reasonable policy at Michigan Stadium.

I'm always amazed to see your post total because whenever I see your comments they seem totally reasonable.

When a new poster casually asks about some previous and often divisive poster I invariably assume that the new guy is just the old guy with a new name.

And the constant "hehe" is freaking me out a bit.

08/29/2018 - 9:03am Took me a couple of days,…

Took me a couple of days, but I finally had a chance to read it today as well. Lots of good stuff about the season, but I especially liked this part: "just remember that you are talking about human beings who didn’t do anything wrong beyond not be who you wanted them to be." Those words should be included on the banner or whenever anyone wants to submit a comment.

08/09/2018 - 9:00am We used to go to Barcelona…

We used to go to Barcelona way back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I liked it a lot. I'm guessing a lot of other places from that era are no longer around because I haven't seen them mentioned--Handke's, the Refectory, Rigsby's.

Is North Market still a good around? Kind of akin to Reading Terminal Market in Philly. Multiple options for people with different tastes. It was also the original home of Jeni's (had a different name back then). It was almost just a one-woman operation back then. Humble beginnings and all that!

I was in Columbus in the early 2000s. Old Bag of Nails was a staple for us. I especially liked their fish and chips. Glad to hear it's still around!

Wow--that's a bit out there. But close to the Renaissance Faire! And I'm assuming Valley Fair, if that's still around?

Arboretum is a nice spot. Where in the Twin Cities are you?

06/14/2018 - 8:23am I grew up in Minneapolis, so…

I grew up in Minneapolis, so I could never say that St. Paul is better. But now that I am older I can definitely see the appeal of St. Paul. Really, though, I would say that comparing the two is tough. They are both great, and part of what makes the Twin Cities nice is that you have the two different city-centers so close together.

I'd call it more of a summer beer, but when the weather is nice Two Roads Persian Lime Gose is excellent (if you like something sour and tart). It's out of Connecticut, but might be available in Michigan.

Ahh--that makes sense, otherwise it's a pretty churlish response to XTra's reasonable comment. Still, how about some general civility on the board? (I know, I know--it's the internet.)

They made a special table for him. Keep in mind, this is at a basketball academy where presumably the kids are already pretty tall.

05/07/2018 - 9:45am Has anyone seen that kid from

Has anyone seen that kid from Romania who is currently playing basketball at some sort of academy in Ohio? Something this could be a serious issue for kids who are that big. If I had to guess, most schools will accomodate someone who is unusually tall, either 1) simply because they want to make things (reasonably) comfortable for students, and 2) I can imagine that schools would consider this to fall under health accomodations, the same way a student with asthma/allergies may be allowed to have a window A/C unit that is otherwise prohibited.

By the way, the basketball player from Romania seems to adapt pretty well to the challenges of being 7' 7".

05/06/2018 - 2:54pm Saw this in the Concord

Saw this in the Concord Monitor this morning--wondered if it was real.

John Stark isn't even in the highest division of NH schools. That's reserved for the "big boys"--you know, Nashua, Exeter, Keene, Merrimack, etc.

(Not implying anything about the kid. But I have to think it's pretty rare for John Stark to send a kid to a high-level DI school. Then again, Duncan Robinson is a NH kid too so who knows!)

05/04/2018 - 10:24pm I have a friend who went to U

I have a friend who went to U of C for business school. Very personable/social. And he retired at age 39.

05/04/2018 - 9:46am May Fourth is also the date

May Fourth is also the date of an important political demonstration that took place in China in 1919. Next year will be the hundredth anniversay--I imagine it will generate a fair amount of discussion/commentary. I celebrate every year by re-reading Lu Xun's "The True Story of Ah Q." (Not really, though it is worth reading.)

I have a feeling it's safe to say that you are describing a white guy (if "Northwestern QB" and "Clayton" weren't enough of a hint).

I'm guessing it was a joke. Irregardlessly of whether he meant it that way, I'm definitely going to insert it into regular conversation to see how people react.

04/17/2018 - 11:03am In the movies showing this

In the movies showing this kind of moxy does often earn some grudging respect. Just another example of movies steering me in the wrong direction.

04/17/2018 - 10:58am 27-0 nothing at this moment

27-0 nothing at this moment and STILL underrated.

(Though would it be a raven? Shouldn't it be a passenger pigeon or some kind of falcon or something?)

100% agree. If your whole shtick is "I'm old and have been around the block a few times," don't act like a 12-year-old and keep saying "I told you so!"

04/02/2018 - 11:39pm I don't understand this "not

I don't understand this "not showing up" thing. Sometimes you play a better team and your own shots don't fall. "Not showing up" makes it sound like some kind of lack of effort or lack of will. That's not what I saw tonight.
