Dan Enos rumors

Blame goes to Frey since it was a TE and Frey is the run game coordinator.

If can can make the offense work and help Michigan win the national championship, he'll be sitting pretty to suceed Dantonio when he leaves/retires.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:43 PM ^
I really like the idea of bringing in someone who has done something innovative at a lower level, working their way to the top of the heap by being innovative. This hire would not be that.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:32 PM ^
Jim Harbaugh isn't look for innovative. If you're looking for the next Scott Frost or Joe Moorhead as OC, you're not going to see him at Michigan. Michigan has fullbacks and a bunch of tight ends, and they're not going to reinvent the wheel.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
with Full backs and TEs. Most of the top offenses today run 20 personell and use a hybrid H/TE type guy. Crap our TEs only make plays when lined up in the slot anyway. PFF just had a stat how Gentry/McKeon led the BIG in production from the slot. Iowa St has one of the best offenses in the country and they are mainly in a Twins formation with a TB TE and FB and 2 WRs. And do some amazing things from that twins set. Personell isn't an excuse for being creative and creating an offense that suits your players. The Oline isn't good enough to just line up in I formation and try to run power all day. He better start looking for something, because the offense they are doing now is old, tired and easy to defend. I saw a 3rd down play yesterday that was a flood concept to the boundary and there were 2 WRs running outs within 1 yard of each other. What the heck is that, lol

Tires smooth out the ride quite a bit, and improve traction immensely.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
But wasn't Michigan innovative and creative the last two years with that type of personnel?
January 2nd, 2018 at 9:27 PM ^
As I understand it, Frost runs 30 plays which he disguises out of many formations. (Of course, I'm sure he add and subtracts wrinkles as he sees fit for differnet opponents.)
By comparison, Harbaugh's playbook has close to 250 plays and each can be run with various personnel groupings and formations. (Philosophically, Jim Harbaugh is from the Joe Gibbs school.) If a player can't master even 50% of his playbook, then all that complexity is ultimately useless.
Given the limited time that college players have to practice, it's no surprise that spread offenses focus on about 25-75 plays (depending on the QB) and just do it out of a dizzying array of formations.
It's no surprise that Chip Kelly bombed out of the NFL once DCs adjusted to his offense (which is actually quite simple) and NFL players recognized tendencies and tells.

I'll take it. Someone on staff will finally realize that MSU is a rivalry game and give a shit.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:50 PM ^
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
They have to hire someone else to tell them about OSU being a rivalry. It needs to be a Co-Rivalry coach situation.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
It was a hyperbolic statement made to show my annoyance with the MSU rivalry over the last decade.
Saying Brady Hoke bleeds Michigan won't win you any arguments with me. He also appologizes to Mark Dantonio for putting lawn spikes in Spartan Stadium.

completely underwhelmed with Enos' track record.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:49 PM ^
Not thrilled with adding someone who bombed at CMU but what do I know. We're just a bunch of idiot non coaching fans anyway.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
He was going alright, improving and going to bowl games, which is really what most MAC programs really want. He's the one who decided to leave CMU to get a pay raise as an SEC OC. Nothing about what he has done has been inspiring or leading me to believe he would be some great hire for U of M. But he isn't Drevno and that is really the only positive I can see aside from the idea that he is a good recruiter.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:52 PM ^
a great Assistant to the Co-OC. Key Grip and Best Boy might be good fits as well.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Enos will be Asst. Head Coach, play-action game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator.

What an uninspiring hire, this team needs an up and coming innovative mind over another pro-style re-tread in the worst possible way.

The Nussmeier hire was a bunch of people convincing themselves of something, he was getting forced out of Bama after producing a boring methodical offense on a team that could out talent everyone they came across. He wasn't considered an innovative mind by anyone, he was considered comptetent which was a huge step up from Borges.
Harbaugh has sorrounded himself with offensive minds that have never been successful outside of their work with him, the exact opposite of what he did on defense. Its resulted in a stale offense. Drevno needs to be fired, bringing in Enos as a co-oc would certainly make it seem like drevno is sticking around.

It's like if you go to a restaurant because their chefs are some of the highest paid around but all they serve is grilled cheese and tomato soup.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
Grilled cheese and tomato soup, competently prepared, would be an upgrade over the warmed-over Swanson dinners we've been served lately.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
They might be cheap, but a good grilled cheese and a good bowl of tomato soup are awesome.
What we saw through much of this year, especially yesterday, was a limp "grilled cheese" spread with lukewarm vinyl-like pasteurized cheese food product and tomato soup that came out of a rusty can that's been in somebody's fallout shelter since 1962.

We need to do away with this run game, pass game crap. Just get a proven, young, creative OC. Give him full control. Get a RB and WR coach and move Jay back to TE's coach. We were promised an offensive guru when he was hired. Never did I imagine that offense would be our trouble spot under his regime. So frustrating and partly due to Harbaugh's loyalty and bad hires. This could have been prevented. With the super weak class that '18 is, it's make or break time for Harbaugh. This offseason will be crucial to regain our momentum in the '18 season.
PS: I'll never trust a Buckeye or a Sparty to join the staff. This hire would be terrible on so many levels.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
Agreed. I love what Mike Gundy did when he hired his OC. Have somebody run numbers on offenses around the country across various levels, match that up with preferred style/tempo, and start setting up meetings. If a dude at a JC in Oklahoma fits the mold and passes the Harbaugh eye-test, then bring him on board.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:59 PM ^
Michigan ties, grew up in Dearborn.
Was a head coach at CMU with ok results 3-9, 3-9, 7-6, 6-6, 7-6
Coached under Dantonio from '04 through '09 as a QB coach and a RB coach.
Was the OC/QB coach for Beliema over the last three years, and as little as I think of Bielema he does have the same offensive philosophy as Harbaugh.
Since he is coming off of a firing I'd be perfectly happy if he came in and was the QB coach / passing game coordinator. Not completely sure I want him as a full fledged OC, but in harbaugh we trust.

Because I don't see Tee Martin taking a step back from USC OC to Co-OC at Michigan. However, I think Wheatley would consider coming back to be OC, unless he is deadset on remaining in the NFL (and with the way the Jags have run the ball this year, who would blame him).

Regardless of who he hires/fires at the OC position, Harbaugh is going to need to sit down and really think about the type of offense he wants to run moving forward because that is how you base your recruiting. Clearly, his current offense is archaic and only works with NFL-caliber players who can execute at exceptional levels. You have mobile QB's in Patterson and McCaffrey, pretty athletic WR's in DPJ, Black, and Collins so the pieces are there if he wants to permanently change to a more hybrid offense. I'm hesitant on anointing Shea as the savior if Harbaugh stays with this offense because I'm not sure if Shea has ever taken a snap under center. Ole Miss was a strictly shotgun-based, run-and-gun type offense.
Regardless, something needs to be done about this offense. It's Year 3 and we only had 9 passing touchdowns this season. That, no matter how you want to spin it, is completely unacceptable. We'll see what happens.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
Peters was just such a let down yesterday. I had high hopes for him since he was the first QB Harbaugh had an eye for and with the redshirt year to sit and learn, thought he would have been better than what he showed. Of course, he can still improve and might become the player we all hoped and wanted him to be. Just made it harder to watch the Rose Bowl and how Georgia played with a true freshman at QB.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
While it isn't a hire that would make me ecstatic, I definitely wouldn't be disappointed either. I think he would be a good hire and someone who would be a good fit for our team.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
If he doesn't call 20 yard routes on 3rd and 1, and doesn't give hand offs to Sean McKeon, that is an upgrade.

January 2nd, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
More like play action on every pass play. But yeah, that was so bizarre to see over and over again. Especially when they almost never threw it deep anyway, not that anyone would have been open.

How much of that do you pin on Pep/Drevno vs. Harbaugh? Doesn't Harbaugh have the final say on all play calling?
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:16 PM ^
He did a pretty good job at Arkansas
January 2nd, 2018 at 7:59 PM ^
Huh, he did have some success considering where he was. Here are all the fancystats for Enos's offense at Arkansas:

Enos: FEI: #5 S&P: #4 ESPN Efficiency: #1
Enos : FEI: #41 S&P: #39 ESPN Efficiency: #38
Enos : FEI: #42 S&P: #43 ESPN Efficiency: #48
