Post Camp Rumblings and Nuggets.

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on

We're almost there folks.  Crazy how fast the offseason can go.  I'll try to keep this short and sweet but I got some clarification to some of the rumors and performance evaluations that weve been seen suggested over the last few weeks.

*Speight is legit and has simply done a great job.  He won the spot plain and simple.  O'korn is going to be a hell of a backup.  There is a walk-on QB that is tearing it up also. Not sure of his name...but Harbaugh has taken notice.

* Amarah Darboh is making a leap.  He has been described as a "man" out there and may challenge Jehu for top shotta in the WR stable.  Darboh's strength and hands have been setting him apart this camp.

* The freshman recievers are the real deal.  McDoom is turning heads and will play.  Nate Johnson is more than holding his own but the jewel of them all is Kekoa.  He has been as advertised and should factor into the rotation right away.

* Devin Asiasi is going to play and is standing out in a crowded TE group.  His size and athleticism is showing and he has big time potential.

* There is much news in terms of Running Back.  Deveon is your starter.  Ty has had a solid camp and is the #2.  The Chris Evans hype is real and he has flashed quite a bit in camp.  He will see snaps in 3rd down situations and has a terrific knack for route running.  Higdon is finally back after a meniscus operation that shelved him for the past 2 months and a battle with mono (contracted while volunteering in nursing home in spring).  He will factor in the rotation and has hit the ground running well the last week.  Higdon is the strongest back on the team and is also likley the fastest.  There is an medical hiccup with Drake and I wont divulge how severe or minor it is at this time.   There is no positive news to report of Kareem Walker and Evans was moved to RB for a reason.

* There is certainly a confidence with this group.  They realize that they have everything to play for this year.  They also realize that Michigan State and Ohio State are the mountains in the way.

* Aside from Drake's issue there are no notable medical developments. Team is banged up because Harbaugh practices them like Harbaugh practices.  They are very anxious to put some actualization to the hype.  Tune in Saturday....it should be fun.

If any of this was redundant or not interesting I apologize.  I'm just sharing some info I've gotten the past week or so.  Go Blue!!!

any more info on him you feel you can share? I loved the story on how he ended up at UM. I've been waiting to see more from him, but he never seemed to make any significant plays when he got in the game last year. But, I am sensing Harbaugh likes the kid and that he's a hard worker, doing things the right way. Would love to hear more about his UM experience so far.

Big dropoff after Chesson and Darboh. Wasn't hearing much buzz about Drake Harris and Moe Ways in Camp. These new recruits will be needed big time in '17, so glad to hear they'll likely get some game experience this year.

Great post. Thanks for the insights.

I'm still very worried about the OL, particularly after reading Brian's preview. I think they're the group who could prevent this team from being truly elite, especially if one or two of them goes down during the year.

Appreciate the nuggets. Very encouraging to hear how far along the QB's are compared to last year at this time. The fierce competition makes everybody better. Harbaugh makes players compete like none other and he brings the best out of them. If Speight goes down, O'Korn will be a great backup. I also can't wait to see Chris Evans on the field.

Thanks OP. I am curious about like the poster above re Drake Harris. He has been very unfortunate but I was hoping that he will make a huge contribution because he is a local kid and he had so much talent and skill when he came out of high school. I love to see him finally get a break with his health and take the top off a few times this year.

This was some nice, useful information to wake up to, and aside from the news about Drake - who hopefully can contribute at some point here - it seems like all is pretty much well overall. That's what you want to near moving into the first game, I would say.

Thanks for sharing this, OP.

Kingston Davis has the biggest frame/core out of all the backs.  While in Bradenton he had by far the largest trunk, and it was not close.  Higdon is a small skat back type, he must be thinking about Davis.

MichiganMan14 or UMBig11...

Do you think the OL will finally be a strength for us this year? Can the Citrus Bowl performance be a consistent level of play all year?

I would like to know what's up with Walker. I doubt that Evans was moved to 3rd/4th string RB because of it as much as the coaches figured Evans was a great choice for the role.

While reading Brian's positional posts its tempting to become skeptical of how many seemingly great players are on the team. These updates that reinforce this theme are terrifically exciting - perhaps the problem this year will be how is there enough of the ball to go around!! I'm wondering also if thats what give Speight the advantage over O'Korn - being able to effectively deploy all the weapons around him and not overly rely on his legs. I have no insight whatsoever, but I can wonder out loud...

I'm saving for the COFOPO because this team is gonna be goooood.

I pretty much agree with you. I'm wondering whether or not Karan Higdon had a good portion of this strength last year. I mean, he didn't look like a strong runner or tackle breaker. He seemed like a small back who went down with minimal contact. Many RBs can put up great bench and squat numbers, but that strength doesn't always translate to being a powerful runner on the field. In order to be a powerful runner, sometimes a player has to have something in their inner being that goes beyond just strength numbers. Therefore Higdon could have that strength, and still not be a powerful tackle breaking runner.

I have been a bit skeptical about choosing Speight over O'Korn but it looks like Speight could be the real deal. With excellent QB play this year we will be unstoppable

I am not able to post on the blog through my iPhone app because it says I need "CAPTCHA verification".  I have no clue how to do this.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

And yes, this is not the thread to ask this in but I figured it may take years for someone to respond to my question within the Board FAQ.

partly why we're getting  more looks from Najee Harris. He may be told his starting chances as a frosh are higher. (Funny my autocorrect changed Najee to naked at first).
