09/09/2018 - 12:47pm Also drew a crucial PI flag…

Also drew a crucial PI flag on their final drive to keep it alive.  Do doubt he played a major role in the game but one receiver does not make a whole offense.  The ASU QB actually looked pretty bad.  Missed some wide open receivers and handed MSU an INT by way overthrowing his guy.

09/08/2018 - 8:18pm That's quite the conspiracy…

That's quite the conspiracy theory (and not entirely impossible) but that's far from the most likely scenario.  I don't see why we would assume that JH is lying about that, especially since Peters is older and more experienced that McCaffrey, and played well most of the season last year.  Doesn't that seem like the most likely situation here?

09/08/2018 - 8:13pm He seems to be their whole…

He seems to be their whole offense, and although he appears to electric, that's not sustainable.  Michigan will force him to pass, and is he doesn't we will break him in half (if he's not broken before that). Nebraska does not concern me at all.

09/08/2018 - 3:46pm Colorado has a strong start…

Colorado has a strong start against Nebraska too.

09/07/2018 - 1:37pm As far as I know, Bredeson,…

As far as I know, Bredeson, Onwenu and Ruiz are the only guys in our OL group who did not redshirt.  All of the rest have.

08/30/2018 - 3:36pm No, not a huge blow but he's…

No, not a huge blow but he's a good player with a decent amount of experience and would have not only provided decent depth (if not a starter) but likely would have been a major contributor on special teams as well.  I don't expect this to have a major impact in the game, but it's certainly not a good thing for ND, especially as the year goes on.

08/30/2018 - 12:40pm Wait - you don't think ND…

Wait - you don't think ND questions on offense?  They lose their 5 best players (plus the RB who was supposed to start) and their returning starter QB played pretty mediocre last season and was a question mark to even be the starter this year.  I think they have a lot more questions than we do.  If Dexter Williams is out, they have one RB on the roster who has carried the football in college, Tony Jones.  We have a physical defense, so asking him to play the whole game won't happen.  i think they have a lot of questions on offense, and those will be answered in a sad way against this defense.

08/30/2018 - 12:31pm I'm a little worried about…

I'm a little worried about it, but it's really the only thing I'm worried about offensively.  As the other guy said, McSorley has great passing ability and had Barkley so we had to focus on their two main abilities, leaving scrambling more open.  Same with OSU.

It sounds like ND won't have a great running back out there and Wimbush is not an elite thrower, meaning we'll be able to hang back and shadow him.  We had to pressure McSorley because if we gave him time he'd pick us apart.  We don't have to pressure Wimbush as much since he's not a great passer, and honestly I think our pass rush will be better this year, despite losing Hurst.

So although Wimbush scrambling is a bit of a concern, it's not a huge one and if that's how they're going to move the ball regularly against us, Wimbush isn't making it through the game.

08/30/2018 - 12:22pm He also left out that a big…

He also left out that a big part of the reason ND's offense was ranked so high (aside from their soft schedule which won't help them Saturday, they put up 49 each on Temple and BC, 48 on Wake and 52 on Miami (OH)), was their very good OL, where they lost two guys in the top 9 picks of the NFL draft.  Even though I believe those are the only two they lose, losing two top-10 picks from one unit will always result in a massive downgrade to the next year.  They also had a TE and a WR drafted off last year's offense and their top RB (by a wide margin) graduated.  That's their 5 best offensive players (top TE, RB and WR and two best OL) gone from the 2017 team.

And if I'm not mistaken, ND also lost their starting RB, right?  And sure we lost our starting WR, but we also didn't have him last year so it's not like that's a bunch of 2017 production we need to replace.

My point is that comparing ND's 2017 offense to M's 2017 offense isn't really all that useful.

08/26/2018 - 2:31pm A foot doesn't sound season…

A foot doesn't sound season ending (obviously could be) but the timing likely means he misses half the season.  That said, he could very well be back for a few of our tougher games.

08/25/2018 - 9:16pm Because even the player…

Because even the player doesn't know the severity of the injury immediately after it happens.  MRIs exist for a reason.

08/25/2018 - 9:12pm Disagree.  How many years…

Disagree.  How many years have we had a guy put up big numbers in the first three or so games and then either disappear or drop off drastically?  Just because he had a few good games doesn't solidify him there.  I would argue Grant Perry is hands down our top receiver and the argument can certainly be made for DPJ as well.

08/25/2018 - 9:10pm I don't see a problem with…

I don't see a problem with increasing McKeon's (and Gentry's) targets if we are down a WR.  They have different strengths but both of those guys are major match up problems and many CBs wouldn't know what to do with bodies like that coming at them.

08/25/2018 - 8:55pm You're being ridiculous.  It…

You're being ridiculous.  It's football.  They need to practice.  And most of these types of lower leg injuries happen without contact anyway.  He's a WR, he needs to run routes.

And if it's that serious of an injury, it could have happened at any point.  Would you be just as pissed if this happened at a full contact practice two days ago?  Injures are part of the sport, chill out.

08/25/2018 - 3:44pm If Michigan is that 2-loss…

If Michigan is that 2-loss team, we're in the playoff.  Including the BTCG, we will play 6 top-15 level teams and we'd be a conference champ.  I highly doubt there are 4 teams with a better resume than that out there.

Where does Cade play? In the Reno area?  Where are you Yessir, in Sac?  I'm up there a lot for work, maybe I'll try to catch a game.

08/22/2018 - 2:51pm Well maybe not every writer…

Well maybe not every writer wants to attack their prediction article like “hey let’s assume all results from last year happen this year too.”

Like you said, most of our results from last year could have gone the other way had we had our players available. I get that that’s part of football but if our QB is healthy all year last year, this prediction wouldn’t look crazy at all.

08/21/2018 - 3:08pm Who is his competition?  Not…

Who is his competition?  Not super strong year for QBs.  That said, either of the dudes from Georgia or Alabama should probably be it, the QB show in the title game last year was off the charts.

08/21/2018 - 3:07pm Agreed.  My unpopular (or…

Agreed.  My unpopular (or maybe just uncommon) opinion is that Khaleke is the best player on our defense this year.  Dude is going to own fools.

08/21/2018 - 3:02pm The formatting is somewhere…

The formatting is somewhere between frustrating and deplorable.  Sometimes you use 1,2,3 to rank order, sometimes slashes, but are slashes different from "OR"?  Who knows.

08/15/2018 - 1:49pm Yeah - even when you have…

Yeah - even when you have depth you don't want to eat into it.  Because now the guy who was the "really good back up" is the starter and the new back up is clearly not as good as the previous back up, at a position where back ups tend to see a lot of time.  Like you said, those third back ups are usually less proven, and even if they play well will more prone to mistakes.  Also, injuries happen throughout the season, which is part of the reason depth is so important, so when you're down a starter before that attrition even starts, that's not ideal.

This is far from a season derailer, but I don't blame PSU fans for being a little bummed about this and their opponents to be a little relieved.

08/14/2018 - 5:30pm Agreed - that's nutty,…

Agreed - that's nutty, especially for a guy who isn't particularly tall. RB-type builds don't typically do well at HJ, especially guys who don't really focus on it (like a 3-sport athlete).  That is some high-end explosiveness on him.  I'm impressed.

08/13/2018 - 2:54pm I'll need you to go into…

I'll need you to go into more detail than that.  If a team signs a player to a contract under the this CBA, he can't just be cut and lose his salary.  Again, this is what I understand from listening to the radio out here where they talk Lakers non stop.  In what instance can an NBA contract be less than fully guaranteed?  I'm not talking about things like a team or player option to extend a contract.

08/13/2018 - 2:43pm I don't believe that's true…

I don't believe that's true.  All NBA salaries are guaranteed, from what I understand.

08/12/2018 - 1:07am You're giving the edge to a…

You're giving the edge to a lot of 2018 people who haven't proven much.  Ruiz equal to Cole?  Come on.  Hopefully Shea is better than Speight but we don't know and 2016 Speight was undefeated when healthy.

Gary over Wormley is even a stretch.  Wormley was a monster, and I know Gary had the recruiting hype and stuff but assuming he's an upgrade over 2016 Wormley is still just projection.  And I think Winovich's ceiling might be 2016 Taco, but again, I think that optimistic.  You say Ross, who we haven't see, will be equivalent to Mike McCray who was a 4th year player?

Anyway, I think your evaluation here is really optimistic.  I think all of those COULD happen, but that's more of a best case scenario than realistic scenario.

08/11/2018 - 6:20pm This was my thought as well…

This was my thought as well.  He was an incredible WR in high school and he is reportedly the fastest guy on the team.  And he's not in line to start.  Gotta get the best athletes involved how you can.

08/11/2018 - 3:08pm Yeah - normally I would…

Yeah - normally I would dismiss that kind of stuff but I know someone very close to me who went through a situation like that so I know how that can go.  That doesn't mean that's the case with Smith, but it's unfortunately possible so can't be ignored.  Just like there are asshole men who treat women poorly, there are crazy bitches who bait men into stuff, abuse their husbands and lie about all of it, knowing they'll get the benefit of the doubt.  It gets especially hard when both people have questionable character and you have no idea who to believe (could very well be the case here).

It all puts a lot of pressure on the school to do a thorough investigation if they knew (or felt that) a reporter has all the information already.  You look really bad when you do an "investigation" only for a reporter to pull out a bunch of facts you should have been able to uncover.

08/11/2018 - 12:11pm This is a good point -…

This is a good point - wouldn't it be totally legit for players who are out of eligibility to sell their shoes?  Between the guys who have graduated or just left the program in the last 3ish years, getting to 23 pair wouldn't be hard at all.

Which is around 6 million.  So you were both right.  Or you were right both times.

08/10/2018 - 1:00pm I know this isn't a…

I know this isn't a recruiting class we were all psyched about, but there are a lot of lower rated guy we have good reason to be excited about - Van Sumeren, Schoonmaker, Barrett, Welschoff, etc.  These aren't your typical "low rated guy." I'm not saying this makes the class a home run or anything, but that it mitigates some of the concern.

Would still have liked some DTs and WRs tho

08/09/2018 - 11:52am The questions wasn't "will…

The questions wasn't "will be have success?"  Who knows the answer to that.  The question was "if he has success, will he get poached by a bigger program" and that's what the posters above are saying won't happen.  If Brohm has success, some bigger name program might poach him, but if Frost does, Nebraska will pay out their ass for him and he'll have celebrity status in Nebraska unlike anywhere else.

F5 lowers the brightness on my computer.  FYI.  I am not in F5 mode at this moment.

08/03/2018 - 1:26pm There are always at least 4…

There are always at least 4 DBs on the field and sometimes 5. We often use two TEs or a fullback, meaning there are only 2 WR on the field at times. And as some have said, some of our TEs or RBs can split out as WRs so we definitely need more DBs, by a large margin. That’s also a more physical position so risk of injury is higher.

07/29/2018 - 12:01pm If you're going by true…

If you're going by true strength of the team as measured at year's end, you might be able to include Penn State '16.  They rolled of 9 wins after us, including wins against #2 OSU and #6 Wisco in the BTCG and lost on a last second FG to USC in the Rose Bowl.  I don't feel that PSU was better than us that year and the game was at home, but considering how badly we beat them and how good they were by year's end, you could include this.  It's certainly one of the biggest wins in recent history.

07/20/2018 - 6:32pm I'll bite.  Let's say we…

I'll bite.  Let's say we lose to both.  Who do you want to hire (that we can hire) who will be better than Harbaugh?  We need a coach.  Firing only makes sense if you think there is someone available who can do better.  I don't see where we hire someone better than Jim Harbaugh.

07/20/2018 - 12:41pm Haskins was different…

Haskins was different because he a) knew the offense well since it was the end of the season, b) was surrounded by Buckeye talent (a lot higher level than what this kid will have at his disposal), and c) Haskins wasn't the QB we prepared for, making it different.  If Martinez is the starter and we have a few games of tape on him, he will eat turf for 60 minutes (or fewer).

07/20/2018 - 12:31pm Not just true frosh QB, but…

Not just true frosh QB, but true frosh QB in September.  On the road.  This guy will be having Gary/Winevich/Bush nightmares after this one.  I'm not worried about this game at all.

07/18/2018 - 11:42am I agree with you that 51 isn…

I agree with you that 51 isn't elite for the quarter, but IMO sub-50 is and it's a good bet he gets there.  I think he's a soph in this video, right?  If he's class of 2020, 2018 would be his soph year.  Point still stands.

07/16/2018 - 12:28pm Ive been using YouTube TV…

Ive been using YouTube TV for about a year (so including last year's football/basketball season) and it's great.  The quality is awesome and it includes BTN which is key.  I had an issue during the NCAA tourney because it doesn't have any of the Turner channels (TNT, TBS, etc) but other than that, no complaints.  Also, the DVR part is awesome, you can record from anywhere, watch on any device, and the DVR is unlimited.  I record every single M bball and football game.

07/15/2018 - 2:58pm As a former track guy, I…

As a former track guy, I would say that the 400m alone doesn't "translate" all that well by itself, but that's a real tough race, especially for a guy as big as he is.  It tells me he's not only really fast, but has some mental toughness and likely a decent amount of endurance as well, which will allow him to put in lots of high quality reps every practice.  But really - it just shows he's a hell of an athlete.  That's what we want.

Endurance is important for WR who have to run route after route after route at practice, which becomes a sort of wind sprint drill all day.  He also might be a guy the QBs turn to to put in extra work because they know he can go all day without needed a break.

07/13/2018 - 10:53pm It's Michael Scott and…

It's Michael Scott and everyone else, IMO.  He is the perfect TV character.

07/13/2018 - 6:18pm Oh, hockey.

Oh, hockey.

07/13/2018 - 6:15pm Wait - you think a guy who…

Wait - you think a guy who barely played his freshman year will leave early for the draft?  Or are you suggesting he won't be awarded one?  Both seem like a weird assumption at this point.

07/01/2018 - 8:00pm Shea has athleticism for a…

Shea has athleticism for a QB no doubt, but it's a different level of athleticism needed to be an elite skill position player, even a TE (especially one who isn't 6'5"+, though he may get there in a few years).

07/01/2018 - 2:25pm Damn, GRIII has done a lot…

Damn, GRIII has done a lot better financially than I expected when he declared for the draft (and once he was drafted).  Good for him, he's made some solid bank in the league.

06/30/2018 - 9:01pm Exactly.  We've had guys get…

Exactly.  We've had guys get DUIs and not get much in terms of punishment so it's a little hypocritical to expect Urban to do something extreme, especially with a freshman.  This kid was likely to contribute a ton early, so even if he got something huge like half the season that wouldn't affect much.

I think Urb's comments about Pitino had more to do with recruiting and institutional rule breaking and cover ups, not players get into somewhat routine trouble.  I'm not saying DUIs are good by any means, but I tend to be more lenient toward offenses that show lack of judgment as opposed to showing that the kid is a really bad dude.

06/30/2018 - 3:03pm I agree with you that this…

I agree with you that this guy's offer list looks more like a 4 star.  Keep in mind the recruiting sites always lag the offer list because the coaches are evaluating these kids sooner in most cases than the sites are.  The teams have more resources (money, personnel and relationships) and expertise in scouting players than the recruiting sites do, and the sites only re-rank so often so there is always a lag.  It wouldn't surprise if this kid is ranked higher down the road.
