Michigan Daily on the QB situation

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Two short articles from the Daily, one each on O'Korn and Speight.

O'Korn learned a lot having Rudock as his roommate and Speight thinks he has a good shot at being the starter this year.

Nowhere have I seen more "Muck Fichigan" (or the very classy "Fuck Michigan") t-shirts than in the tailgating areas surrounding Illinois Memorial Stadium.  Granted, I have never been to Columbus but I have been to East Lansing four times in the past decade.

You clearly don't recall Red Grange going crazy against us back in '24?!

Or that damned Kurt Kittner leading his unranked squad into Ann Arbor in '99 and taking down our boys despite a heroic performance by one Tom Brady? Kept us out of the Rose Bowl! (and instead into the Orange, where Brady performed more heroics)

And then there was.... Ah, I got nothin' else

Does Speight remind anyone else of actor Chris O'Donnell (from about 10-15 years back), or is it just me?

Anyway.

Whatever is decided here, I'm good with. Happy to see the competition.

Creating this kind of competition is not an easy task. I see this as evidence that Harbaugh has fully installed his system to the program. Now not only is everyone buying in but it's producing exactly want it's intended to do. I'm excited to see how this develops into results on the field and especially excited to see how it develops moving forward and the talent levels of the guys competing improves with newer recruits. Very cool.

Nothing on Shane? Is he done? Forgotten About?

I'm with a majority of people here in the belief that O'Korn is the starter but I cannot imagine Shane is not in this competition as well.

Please don't disparage Michigan's players.  None of them deserve this.  They're busting their asses trying to get better, after achieving a lot just to get to the point of being on the roster.

Furthermore, the noises out of Spring Camp have been pretty positive on Shane's development.  So on top of being unduly harsh, it seems that your comment is off base.

not wanting players to be trashed here but what gives you the impression he's improving?  Reports have come out from the MLive guys that for every ten reps Wilton is getting with the 1st team, Shane is getting 3.  Seems like he's again not going to see the field.

I understand why people have wanted to see Shane do well, especially with his love of Michigan but what he was lacking coming out of high school (which is doing well in live situation, not 7on7 drills) is the exact same four years later.

I'm glad he's getting a free 4 year education which will serve him well in life, and its great he got his redshirt last year but I really don't think there is any other option for him other then a firm handshake at the end of the year and a good luck playing elsewhere.  There will be too much depth on the team and they will need that scholarship elsewhere.

What I'd heard was that reps were basically getting split three ways between O'Korn, Speight and Morris - and that it was a legitimate three-way competition.  I understand that some of this is coach-speak, but still, you don't water down O'Korn and Speight's reps if you don't see some potential in Morris.

I had also heard the QB coach say that Morris had developed some touch on his passing.  He's always been able to throw a laser (maybe not the best choice or aim in the past, but a rope) - if he's developing touch that's really encouraging.

On top of that, he's finally getting some stability.  Same offense as last year means a lot for anyone who (1) missed his h.s. senior season due to mono, (2) went through two offensive coordinators (Borges and Nuss) with divergent styles and little success in his first years at Michigan, and (3) got shredded in his few game appearances in Hoke's last season.  The stability should help his decision-making on the field.

I'm not saying that he's the presumed club house leader by a longshot.  But he's had a rough ride so far, and the noises were encouraging out of camp.

Spot on !  Great things are coming from the culture of open and fair competition that JH has installed.  Achievers will excel and grow the culture even further, while under-achievers will be buried on the depth chart or transfer .. thus freeing up room for more achievers to come into the program.

All things equal, or even not-quite equal, give me the QB with the higher mobility.  The one that can more easily pick up yards due to a broken play or designed QB run.

in enough time to game plan for week 1, I am OK.  When It comes to QBs, I sincerely doubt I know more about anything in the world as well Harbaugh knows QB play. I am more worried about our run game and reciever depth on offense and safety/ linebacker play on Defense.

account that it's a three way race as Morris is right in the thick of this and will have a say on who ends up starting. It's great to have this kind of depth at QB and the competition will just make all of them better.

I think it's O'Korn's job to lose. Harbaugh went with Kaepernick over Alex Smith (who was playing very well) because Smith was limited in what he could do. Harbaugh thought Kaepernick had more big play ability. In this case, Speight is an unproven version of Smith, while O'Korn has the big play potential. But Harbaugh HATES turnovers. so if O'Korn doesn't win the job, it'll be because Harbaugh doesn't have enough trust in his decision making. And if Morris really does end up #3, I think he goes elsewhere.

Don't think Wilton is athletic enough for Jimmy long term. Can he keep plays alive once the pocket breaks down? My money is on OKorn Sept3.
