That shot would have tied the game, not won it.

Sorry, that was meant for Thadmatta and his assertion that DDJ looks like a "project," which to me was based on nothing other than he isn't playing as a freshman.

I do appreciate that you answered, though!

This probably isn't a popular opinion but I think it's fair for MSU to be ahead of Michigan. I'm surprised the media didn't have them that way.

Michigan dropped to #6 in the Coaches Poll while MSU jumped to #5.

Tennessee is #1, Duke #2, UVA #3, and Gonzaga is #4.

That was the Purdue game where Trice hit the stupid bank shot and then the dagger to tie it.

Against Maryland, the Terps won in regulation but Nate Reuvers had two very good looks from three rim halfway out that would have put them ahead (first one) or tied it (second).

(I initially misread your post and thought you said that the second Trice three was a bank shot. I've since edited my post.)

Good call, thanks for the correction.

01/12/2019 - 4:35pm I think most people have…

I think most people have been pretty underwhelmed with the decision to cancel the Arkansas games in favor of resurrecting the ND series and doing so on their terms (i.e. going there two games in a row, putting the 2019 game in the middle of the conference slate).

Others have probably been frustrated that nothing has been done to change the home/away imbalance with OSU and MSU, although I'm not sure that Warde really has that much he can do about that.

OSU about to be on a three game losing streak. Poor things.

It's not like it was on a bullshit shot or questionable foul call. FSU completely overloaded their D to deny Barrett the ball and left a guy absolutely wide open. They screwed up big time.

Everybody lost Reddish and left him wide open for three. Total breakdown by FSU.

The Big Ten did not renew their contract with Valentine to officiate Big Ten games so you haven't seen him this season nor will you going forward (unless it's an NCAA Tournament game).

Could a mod (or Seth) turn on comments for the Northwestern preview on the front page? Looks like it was published with commenting turned off.

Big time flop drew a foul on a three-pointer for the Hoyas. Made all three and now it's a one point Friars lead after three consecutive threes for PC got them up by four.

Duke is #1 but I would say UNC still cares about NC State quite a bit.

Providence is up three with 3.9 seconds left. Georgetown going to be inbounding from under their own basket.

UNC looks terrible today. Classic letdown after an emotional road victory over a rival.

The silver lining to UNC losing would be them most likely dropping below Michigan in KenPom.

I am waiting for the day that someone named Nathan enters the transfer portal so we can refer to him as Nathanathan. What a glorious day it will be.

I mean, it has to happen, right? I very much doubt that Harbaugh would choose to carry an additional offensive coach.

01/11/2019 - 3:15pm Daily Kenpom rankings are…

Daily Kenpom rankings are like daily stock market valuation.  If one is invested in these rankings, then it's best only to look at them once a month.

I have not yet figured this out. Last night the nerd in me was really hoping that Trent Frazier missed the three he jacked up that cut it to a 10-point game with :18 left because Michigan would have most likely rebounded and then dribbled out the clock to a 13-point win (and a 3-point clear of the KP projection). But no, he had to make that three so then Brad Underwood decided that he could still win the game and waste everyone's time.

I knew it was bench mob related!

01/11/2019 - 1:01pm Michigan moved up to #4 on…

Michigan moved up to #4 on December 6th, its highest overnight ranking (there were a few times where they temporarily went up to #3 before the remainder of the night's results came in). For the next several weeks, they defeated a bunch of bad teams at home by less than the expected margin of victory according to the KenPom projection. While this was happening, the teams around Michigan (most notably MSU, Tenn, and Gonzaga) were also winning but by the same margin or larger as compared to the KP projection. Only recently (starting with PSU) has Michigan resumed meeting or exceeding the KP number.

Michigan's high water efficiency margin was 26.65 on the morning of December 4th (good for #5 overall). Today it's 26.28, good for #7 overall.

In conclusion:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

01/11/2019 - 11:09am Sure thing, right after you…

Sure thing, right after you learn how to spell.

(I'm not a "millennial" but am tired of the lazy, tired cheap shots on them.)

01/11/2019 - 11:04am This not some new discussion…

This not some new discussion point. This comes up any time a basketball team starts off the season with a long unbeaten streak: Is it better for a team in the long run to lose so that they can go through some adversity and become stronger as a result. It isn't a millennial thing (yes, you were sort of joking but you're also probably pretty serious about it.)

01/11/2019 - 10:56am Based on the "Andrew Dakich"…

Based on the "Andrew Dakich" and ".gifs" tags I'm going to guess it has something to do with a lack of highlighted bench mob insanity.

Sydney is being a troll. He knows what the OP meant, he's just being needlessly pedantic because of the spelling error.

01/10/2019 - 2:10pm Brian generally does not put…

Brian generally does not put the name of the venue if it has a corporate name. Illinois plays at the State Farm Center so it gets that treatment.

(If it were still called Assembly Hall I'd imagine he would put the correct name as he appropriately labeled Welsh-Ryan Arena in the Northwestern preview.)

In actuality I could've streamed it from my phone using the CBS Sports app and then casted it to my Roku.

But then I wouldn't be able to complain.

That nobody saw because it was on freaking CBS Sports Network!!

Man, that's some controversial shit right there.

Guess that means Mike McCarthy won't be coaching anywhere this upcoming season unless he wants to be a coordinator.

I'm honestly amazed his FT percentage isn't lower with that shooting form. Like single digits.

01/09/2019 - 1:59pm I've had a sub to KP for 4-5…

I've had a sub to KP for 6-7 years now and still use it every day but also really enjoy some of the fun number stuff that Torvik's site has to offer, like adjusting for certain opponents, future results, and isolating certain time frames.

One thing about Pomeroy's site that I really enjoyed was the blog that he would update on a pretty regular basis. When I started subscribing he would do weekly columns on some of the weird and interesting results/box scores across CBB. In the past few seasons he's put more effort in that arena at other sites (ESPN, The Athletic) and now basically only does big offseason posts and stuff around Tournament time at his site.

01/09/2019 - 12:36pm According to KenPom, the…

According to KenPom, the next team whose defensive fingerprint is not "Mostly Man" is Iowa (this excludes IU who is listed as "Inconclusive" but AFAIK played no zone on Sunday). Michigan plays them on February 1st.

I'm not sure how accurate that defensive fingerprint information is, though, right now. For example, KP lists MSU as "Inconclusive" but Izzo is strict M2M. So...I dunno.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Holy shit, that FT clip. Dude makes Andre Drummond look like Steve Nash!

01/09/2019 - 11:17am Part of Michigan's less than…

Part of Michigan's less than stellar OOC SOS is their lackluster preseason tournament where they faced a garbage George Washington team and a decent (but not great by any means) Providence. Looks like Michigan officially accepted an invite in May of 2018 so they should have known the relative quality level of the other teams involved (though I can't imagine anyone thought GW would be this bad).

MSU played in the more formidable  Las Vegas Invitational where they faced UCLA (who kinda sucks) and Texas (highly ranked in KP but also quite flawed). The rest of the difference is MSU playing slightly less awful teams at home.

01/09/2019 - 10:48am I think the look on Mel's…

I think the look on Mel's face basically sums up this hockey season.

Also, I'm sure I missed it as I don't follow hockey as closely as some, but what was the reason for a midweek non-conference game during the middle of Big Ten play?

01/09/2019 - 6:52am Tennessee wrecked Mizzou on…

Tennessee wrecked Mizzou on the road which is why they jumped Michigan (were favored by 7 and won by 24). In order to jump Tennessee again Michigan would need to beat the Illini on Thursday by a larger margin (probably 15+) than the predicted 10 points.

01/08/2019 - 2:01pm Yeah right, like Charles…

Yeah right, like Charles Woodson is going to give up his lucrative ESPN job and cushy life to be a college position coach and work 70+ hours a week.

Hell yeah, let's keep living in the past!

01/07/2019 - 2:03pm More than anything I'd say…

More than anything I'd say it's their 15-0 record. Once they have a few losses they will probably drop because their schedule is quite soft and the AAC is pretty meh this season.
