Hoke Chimes In and Would Not Have Punted

Okay, you guys are sick of seeing MSU threads, chew on this one.

Personally, if we have the No. 1 defense in the nation I'm going to test those guys," Hoke said. "You've got to play to the strength of your football team and the strength of the Michigan football team all year long has been their defense." He said he was sure "Jimmy" went over what he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it but Hoke said there are too many potential breakdowns on a punt. "No. 1, I think the one gunner to the field should have been in a little bit more and if you're going to punt it there's ways to protect it a little better," Hoke said. Hoke first credited the MSU defense for forcing fourth down and said he would have gone for it at that point, handing the ball to De'Veon Smith and "challenge your offensive line" or play-action pass to take four to five seconds off the clock.

So you want to just go for it on 4th down?  At midfield with 10 seconds to go? And give MSU a likely chance at a hail mary play? Idiot.

Never forget he called a timeout at the half to allow a hail mary to happen against him.

I think you're being generous if you believe Hoke and his coaching staff would have had Michigan playing to within 3 scores of MSU this year.  (Not only would our secondary be lost, but our QB situation would have been much worse.)

Screw Hoke...

I thought he'd be talking about his secrets of QB recruiting.

But then again, Hoke's special teams were so proficient and were so good in coverage. /s

Sometimes you are better off saying nothing.

punt formation is not committing more blockers to the LOS, because Sparty didn't have anyone back and there was an uncovered gunner who wasn't going to be passed to no matter what.

In the end, the only reason the call didn't succeed is because the punt snap wasn't caught and the ball kicked. The ball wasn't snapped poorly, it was just not caught and then misplayed.

But Harbaugh considered the alternatives and went with the punt because the punter had been a great weapon all day.

He also knew the history of Michigan defending Hail Mary throws and MSU in catching them. So, he didn't want a repeat of any final play involving a deep pass. You take time off the clock and possibly get a first down with a running play. But if they stop it after a few seconds. You give them maybe two plays to throw deep if you don't get the first down.

I guess that high school coach who never punts would disagree with Harbaugh as well.

The same thought crossed my mind. Make the check at the line, drop back a yard or 2 to make some extra room and heave away. If they catch on and send someone to cover, call it off and one less guy is rushing the kick. Probably not the smartest thing to do though. My heart says punting was the correct move, but my gut at the time said go for it. Here was the hypothetical scenario I played out: Go for it, get stuffed. MSU now has their Hail Mary shot. Glasgow, Hurst and Henry on the d line. Taco and Wormley on the GL at each hash (height to help knock down any potential pass). Stribling, Clark, Lewis, Wilson and Thomas rest of the D backs. Line Peppers up near the line and have him use his athletic abilities to solely rush Cook. Maybe he gets a sack or makes him hurry the throw, etc. I like our D's chances against the Hail Mary. Regardless, I think the punt was the best move in the end. We learn and move on. Go Blue!

I am going to downvote everything Hoke related in OP out of principal go forward.

What a fucking buffoon.  His Shane Morris led, 10 men on the field punting outfit, wasting all this potential on defense, cant teach OL to play team would have been disintegrated by MSU.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda.....

My guess is we would have been throwing Hail Mary passes trying to catch up at that point and not defending a lead if he was still here.
