Pros:
1. Public transit…

NYC

Pros:

1. Public transit.  Forget about having a car.  $121/month gets me an unlimited Metrocard that can get me most anywhere I need to go.  There's even a plan where you can get the money taken from your paycheck pre-tax to buy the fare.  Want to have an extra drink at dinner?  Go ahead!  You're not driving!

2. So many things to do that you miss most of them, but you can sit in your apartment knowing you could be doing so much!

3. The city is alive with people.

4. The choices for eating, shopping... there are so many choices.

5. Dating has pros & cons, but the good thing is there are a lot more choices to pick from.  You may find on a dating site a few dozen who catch your eye instead of just a few.

6. Central Park.

7. In summer, the beaches are just a subway ride away.

8. In winter, they actually plow the streets.

9. NYC gets a bad rap as a "rude" city.  People have their moments, but overall they can be a lot more friendly and helpful than anywhere else I have lived.  My mother was shocked when visiting at how when a woman has a stroller at the subway stairs several men quickly volunteered to help carry it up for her.  When I had a bad fall rollerskating in the park, people came & helped until the ambulance arrived.

10. Jobs.  There are actually jobs here.  And they pay more than elsewhere.  (they need to, because of...)

Cons:

1. Housing prices.  Jimmy McMillan is right.  The rent is too damn high!  (Though the cost of living can be offset a bit by not having the expenses associated with owning a car)

2. Weekends can be a bit crowded when it comes to eating out.

3. There is a large enough amount of the population that is homeless and/or mentally unstable where a short run somewhere can at times be a constant barrage of people begging for money.  I've even been assaulted twice in the last few years by women.  (One begging for change to get a sandwich who tried forcing her way into my building and offered to perform oral sex for 85 cents... NO and another who grabbed me on the street begging for sex.)

Overall I have found NYC can be what you make it.  It's not perfect by any means, but I haven't found a city that actually does things better.

I actually miss many things about living in Detroit.  I'd still be there if I had had any hope of finding a decent job that could pay the bills & have benefits.  It's a shame too, as I had to sell a condo I had rebuilt and made gorgeous... which is now apparently worth about $100,000 more than I sold it for (It resold a year ago for ($60k more than I sold it in 2013.)

I visited Lansing once for a wedding.  I found it to be a sad little depressing town where gunshots weren't even noticed by the locals and occasionally I would see cars decked out in a putrid green where it was obvious they spent way too much on hooking it up to look like that.

It's only cool to brag that someone is a Michigan Man (or Woman) if there is something about that person's accomplishments that you feel you can be proud of.

I don't recall too many people bragging about Michigan Men Ted Kaczynski or Rick Snyder lately.

I wouldn't question their morals, as they are teenagers that are easily swayed.  His decision making CAN be questioned though, and depending on how he acts once coached by Dantoni (like a punk? it's a trademark!) he may become more than just someone who could have made a better decision.

That's why I'm not putting in for it.  I have zero secretarial experience and am still working (part-time) on my BA.  I would love to get into UM & get that degree while doing my part to help the team win, but even if somehow would get the job I doubt there would be time for a couple of classes.

06/15/2018 - 5:13pm I had actually forgot the…

I had actually forgot the score of that game.

All around, it was a weird night.  My b'day was the next day & I didn't feel like just watching the game home alone so I went to a bar/restaurant I like.  It was packed with only one seat at the bar between two guys.  After 20 min or so the woman to my left said something to me & I realized she wasn't a guy.  Oops!  She wouldn't let me just watch the game.  Kept talking.  As the game went on as it did I pretty much stopped watching other than to see if M started playing football.  Since that didn't happen I ended up talking to her a bit & had a good conversation.  I never mentioned my pending b'day even when the whole bar sang Happy Birthday to someone else.  She ended up giving me her number.

Did I score?

Hahahaha...  I sent her a text a few months later.  The only reply I got was a couple weeks later & made no sense other than if it were a response to someone else that she sent to me by mistake.  Makes no difference, as I texted her mainly so I could go to the bar again without the fear of running into her & hearing "I never heard from you."

My favorite two strange laws from yesteryear are both from NYC.

It is illegal to greet someone by placing your thumb to your nose and wiggling your fingers.

It is illegal to walk down the street on Sunday with an ice cream cone in your pocket.

What is fantastic is both of these were apparently enough of a problem to warrant passage of laws to prevent them.  And they worked, as neither are common today!

I've been guessing Wheatley every time someone says a guy will transfer that will disappoint us.

Don't get me wrong, I want nothing more than to see Junior catching TD's & knocking LB's into next week... but dad's gone & the TE room is pretty full.  He needs to get healthy, but with everything else I wouldn't be surprised.  Disappointed, but not shocked.

05/30/2018 - 6:43pm This.  This.  1000x this.

This.  This.  1000x this.

I live in Harlem now.  Don't own a car.  Don't really miss having one.  There are some places I can't get to in this region without mass transit, but they're few, far between & mostly unnecessary.  When I go home to Detroit it's like culture shock.

The little bit of transit that does exist is so poorly designed and/or implemented that it could be argued that that it is intentionally so in order to be an example of why transit doesn't work in Detroit.  For example: In the city of Detroit there are currently Three separate forms of mass transit, (DDOT, DPM & the Q-Line) each with their own separate management.  None of the three work together.  Even in NYC a Metrocard can take care of the fare when you go between the MTA & Path.  It's ridiculous that in Detroit they can't have some sort of cooperative fare system where you could buy a monthly pass & use it on all three forms of transit.  (If they were only reliable.)

Also, the Q-line to me just seems like a transit line built by people who have never actually used mass transit before.

05/30/2018 - 3:53pm It's klnda sad that this will

It's klnda sad that this will likely never again be what it was actually designed & built for: A transit hub.  Though the current train traffic would never be enough to support it alone, it could have been reborn as a train station/bus station with shopping & restaurants.  Would have been a lot nicer than the current mediocre bus station & horrible excuse for a train station.

It's good to see the building will finally be used, but I wonder what Ford will do with the station part, as that isn't exactly made for office space as the office tower behind it.

I occasionally hit the beard with the Just For Men blend away the grey.  Always seems like a shocker when I do it, but then I look at older pics & can't believe how dark it was even 5 years ago.

I used to work with a guy who wouldn't try the blend thing & would go from santa to a dark black beard.  It would be shocking.  And you never knew whether to mention it.

05/16/2018 - 11:06am The ultimate Michael Jordan

The ultimate Michael Jordan moment was when in a playoff game he has the ball & with his free hand happens to grab Reggie Miller by the throat, pushing him to the floor.  Whistle.  Foul on Miller. (Who rightfully went nuts over it.)

The league helped a player who didn't need the help to be great.
