Albert Breer thinks Greg Schiano will be the hire

Submitted by RIP Tractor T on

In a guest spot on the Gresh & Zo program on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, the NFL network's Albert Breer projected that Greg Schiano will be the next Michigan head coach. He indicated that Schiano had been offered the job back in 2007, which he declined at first, but later tried to pursue, at which point Michigan had already proceeded too far with Rich-Rod.

Now, I know Breer is an NFL reporter and an admitted (unabashed) OSU supporter, but the suggestion that Schiano may be the next guy made me almost lose my lunch. Figured I'd see what everyone else thinks...

to 2010 and replace "Brady Hoke" with "Greg Schiano" in all the CC reports and speculation, you'd see the same thing we're getting now: Angst from the fan base, random (and probably different from this time) reports and sources swearing it's going to be Schiano/Hoke, nobody believing them, but it just keeps legs.

So uh ... Hold me Tom VH?

that Schiano, was offered by Bill Martin, and then UM went through Dave Brandon, and now that we have even another AD, that Hackett is thinking along the lines of what Bill Martin may have offered because after turning it down and thinking about it again, he really wanted the job?

Excuse me if I call B.S.

Hiring Schiano is kinda like promoting Beilein.

Downvoted.

Okay. Let me clarify: hiring Schiano contributes to making the football program less visible, thereby making the basketball program more prolific, relatively speaking, as an ambassador of the University of Michigan.

I'm not trying to suggest promoting Beilein is a bad idea.

I am trying to suggest hiring Schiano is a bad idea.

What's with the Schiano hate on this board? Mind you, I know nothing about the guy. Is it just because he isn't Harbaugh or Miles caliber, or is there something more?

I don't get it. I don't necessarily want the guy, but he did take Rutgers to unprecedented heights in their program history. I don't care that he flamed in the NFL -- plenty of college coaches have tried their hands in the pro ranks and realized that the grass isn't always greener. Personally I kind of like that he runs people the wrong way -- it's unfortunate, but nice guys typically finish last in sports.

Obviously below the top tiered guys (the Harbaughs, Miles) but what about the cluster of second tier guys (Mark Stoops, Butch Jones, Dan Mullen, Cam Cameron, Gus Malzahn, Jim McElwain, Chuck Martin, Bob Stoops, Bo Pelini), the coordinators who've never been head coaches (Tom Herman, Pat Narduzzi), or the next tier of head coaches (Troy Calhoun, Paul Chryst, PJ Fleck, etc)

Schiano is rarely mentioned for any job, top school or not.  He's been out of football for almost a year and hasn't even gotten a sniff.  I would put him way down on my list.  Yes, he built Rutgers up from the ground but could never get over the hump to better than just above average.  He had one relatively great season and a bunch of decent seasons that topped out at 8-4ish and 4th or 5th place in the Big East.  Then he flamed out miserably in TB.

He is very damaged goods that never had a big peak in the first place.  I'd much give an up and coming coordinator their first HC gig than have a retread like Schiano who has not proved he can run a top flight program.

Well, besides Michigan, Nebraska, and Florida, what other vacancies are there?

And what exactly is a "hot list" and how can we see Michigan's?  Is it a list compiled by the search committees?  the university presidents?  fans?  message board posters?  journalists?  rumor mills?

Did Buffalo go with a Division III coach because he's better than Schiano or because they figured they had no chance at him?

Long time lurker here, and just figured I'd give my two cents given the anti-Schiano sentiment that is out there.

The guy's criticisms are definitely warranted, but there is no doubt that he can coach well on the defensive side of the ball and has had sucess building up  program. Bear in mind that he took a no-name program at Rutgers and turned it into a respectable one.

There is some worry about his personality and whether it would be a good fit for Michigan, but honestly I don't believe that this is the same person who was fired by Tampa Bay. The article below talks about what Schiano has been doing in his year off and I think it is indicative not only of his commitment but also to his recognition that there needs to be changes made to his coaching style. The article definitely portrays him in a positive light and may be a bit biased, but you cannot deny the benefits of visiting top-notch college programs and nfl coaches in order to gauge what it takes to build a succesful team.

If Schiano gets hired, I wouldn't be opposed to it. There are some things that you can never change, and Schiano may never be the player-friendly coach that people may want, but this is college football, not the NFL (bear in mind that Harbaugh is also known for his hard-nosed approach and that hasn't gone over too well with some of the players in SF). When you are coaching a group of 18-22 year olds there needs to be a high level of discipline and tough love and I believe that Schiano can provide that (Devin McCourty called Schiano the toughest coach he has ever player for and he is currently a pro bowler playing for one of the toughest coaches in the NFL, Bill Belichick).

Right now Michigan needs a coach who can win in the long-term. Quick fixes will not cut it, and for that reason a coach who can provide long-term stability and commitment should be more of a priority than a big name (especially one who may be looking to leverage his position in the future).

He had his shot at UM. He passed. Michigan will now pass on him. While I think he is a solid college coach--a better option than some candidates given on here(Mark Stoops) I don't think he is what UM needs right now.

Winning at Rutgers is extremely difficult and that cannot be discounted. It's the EMU of Power 5 conferences. The guy can coach. But again, he isn't a good at this moment in time.

At some point, we have to stop these threads that are along the lines of "somebody who has demonstrated no knowledge at all of the University of Michigan has somehow been given information about who they will hire."

All I know is that the closer a person is to the athletic department, the less likely they are to claim to know what is going to happen.  That tells me that either no decision has been made, or the decisions are being kept very very private.  Either way, the person who markets himself as "Albert Breer" is not going to be the first (or the ten thousand and first) person to know what will happen.  The same goes for the "Detroit Sports Rag."

Isn't the goal of every hire a home run? And didn't at least some people (most, from what i remember) think each of the last two were going to be home runs for various reasons? I guess I just don't know anyone who would say "let's not go for a home run hire." Hackett included....

Oh boy, somebody gave an uninformed opinion about a situation they don't really know about. Why post these articles unless there's a solid source or substance?

Sparty and Ohio supporters are having wet dreams about UM hiring Schiano.  They're praying just as hard for this possibility as we are for Harbaugh because they know Harbaugh takes no prisoners.

Please NO! This guy hasn't done jack! It's this simple....check his resume and record. If they hire that clown, we would have been better off keeping Hoke. Schiano puts the D in Douche!

Hiring Schiano would be doing him a favor. Yes I read the MMQB profile and yes he's done a fair share of soul searching introspection but no. Thanks but no thanks.
