01/02/2019 - 2:54pm When I was a kid, Jim…

When I was a kid, Jim Harbaugh was the coolest guy around.  He was the Michigan QB that guaranteed victory against OSU.  Everybody wanted to be him.  He was a fucking stud.  You can still hear a bit of that in his podcasts, but why it hasn't translated into the rest of his adult life is puzzling to me.  It's like he is self-sabotaging himself.  Strange.

You nailed it with point #2.  Good old-fashioned Michigan arrogance is something that continues to plague this team.

Great post.  I've been a U-M fan since the days of Rick Leach and you summed up my feelings perfectly.  Tired of the talk.  Show me.

01/02/2019 - 2:15pm What happens to our player…

What happens to our player rating numbers if you knock off the back end of the class and just rate the top 19 or 20 or whatever the amount of players OSU or PSU took was?

Edit: evenyoubrutus addressed this in the post above.

01/02/2019 - 1:40pm Sounds like we got our…

Sounds like we got our equivalent to Michigan State's version of Saban as opposed to Alabama's.

12/17/2018 - 10:53pm The BCS started us down this…

The BCS started us down this path and the playoffs have all but ruined what was once a great sport.  Such a shame.  They killed the goose that laid the golden egg.  College football is now NFL Jr., only without the parity.

12/15/2018 - 11:10pm This game was the basketball…

This game was the basketball equivalent of a mediocre team like a Maryland or Nebraska getting up for a game and giving OSU a run for their money.  Western was pumped to take on the main in-state school, while U-M was going through the motions.  Nothing to get worked up about.  Stuff like this happens in sports.

12/15/2018 - 10:31pm Jon Jansen is not a fan and…

Jon Jansen is not a fan and said as much while filling in for the Gator on WXYT's Karsch and Anderson show last week.  Said he would give anything to play one more game for the Maize and Blue.

12/02/2018 - 11:18pm Yes.  Hang the banner.

Yes.  Hang the banner.

The fact that this program and a majority of fans think they are above hanging a co-division champion banner is exactly what is wrong with this bloated, arrogant, overrated program.

For once, it would be nice to see U-M football take a page from the basketball team and take more of an underdog mindset.

Why is it going to change?

11/26/2018 - 10:04pm California and Texas are two…

California and Texas are two of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country.  You should be pulling in top recruits in your sleep at either school.

11/26/2018 - 9:46pm There are many major…

There are many major obstacles holding U-M back as the OP so astutely illustrates.  I think another one that doesn’t often get mentioned is the mindset and approach that the entire program—staff, players, and fans alike—takes toward big games.

I really believe it wouldn’t hurt this program to drop the whole ‘This is Michigan’ arrogance and start approaching big games with more of an underdog mindset.  When was the last time this program beat a team it wasn’t supposed to beat?  It hardly ever happens, yet every time U-M plays anyone with a heartbeat, we approach the game like we are still Yost’s Point-a-Minute teams from the turn of the century, instead of the underdogs we truly are based on our poor performance in big games over the past 50 years.

The problem wirh playing with the ‘This is Michigan’ mindset is that you end up playing tight, you end up playing not to lose. You don’t want to make any mistakes that could screw up your own self-inflated chances of winning.  As we know, however, teams rarely beat better teams by playing not to lose.

Instead, both staff and players need to take an underdog mindset—similar to what Dantonio has done vs Michigan—and play like there is absolutely nothing to lose.  History has proven time and time again that there really isnt anything to lose anyway.  When a team drops its overinflated sense of self-worth and goes into a game not only realizing, but embracing the idea that they are not expected to win, it’s amazing what kind of a performance they can turn in.

11/26/2018 - 8:54pm Unfortunately OSU and…

Unfortunately OSU and Alabama will both be passing us up in all time winning percentage in the not too distant future.

11/25/2018 - 10:04pm Clemson has no competition…

Clemson has no competition in conference.

11/25/2018 - 9:53pm On what basis can you make…

On what basis can you make this claim?  Because he bumbled his way to victory over the worst OSU team of the past quarter century?

11/25/2018 - 9:45pm The final polls have…

The final polls have definitely not been as kind.  From 1989-present, only Texas, USC, Florida St., Oklahoma, and Nebraska have been more overrated in the preseason poll when compared to their final poll standing than Michigan.

11/25/2018 - 8:53pm This is a tough concept for…

This is a tough concept for people to wrap their head around.  These games do not occur in a vacuum.  The transitive property does not work in sports.  Motivation plays a major role in sports--especially when dealing with college aged kids.  OSU players, coaches, and fans do not spend every waking moment (and most of their sleeping moments) worried about whether they are going to beat Maryland or Purdue.

11/25/2018 - 7:58pm "It's almost like we have to…

"It's almost like we have to wait for OSU themselves to almost be non-competitive ala 2011 to have our turn again."

But isn't that the very reason Florida, Minnesota, and Notre Dame were able to turn their respective tides?

11/25/2018 - 7:41pm Nebraska is in the same boat…

Nebraska is in the same boat we are in that they need to rely on importing talent from neighboring states to stock their roster.  Upon joining the B1G, they effectively killed off their program for good.  You're never going to get a top Texas or Oklahoma kid to play in Nebraska unless you can offer the opportunity of playing back home in front of friends and family multiple times over the course of your college career.

11/25/2018 - 6:46pm LOL.  You actually put stock…

LOL.  You actually put stock into OSU’s performance against the likes of Maryland having any bearing whatsoever on the outcome of the OSU vs Michigan game.  OSU does not live or die to beat Maryland.  People just can’t seem to wrap their head around this concept.

11/25/2018 - 6:41pm Don’t be fooled by OSU’s…

Don’t be fooled by OSU’s performance against lesser teams. This is the mistake so many people made this year. Sure hard work can overcome talent—but only when talent doesn’t work hard.  This is what happens when lesser teams like Iowa, Purdue, Michigan State rise up and unexpectedly beat the Buckeyes. They simply don’t prepare for other teams the way they do for “The Game”. Michigan ALWAYS gets a prepared, motivated, focused opponent whenever they play OSU.

11/25/2018 - 10:14am Disagree.

It’s all about…

Disagree.

It’s all about the players. You cannot tell me that Dantonio, Brohm, Ferentz, or any other coach that has beaten OSU since ‘01 is appreciably better than Harbaugh. People were saying that if U-M beat OSU and went on to the playoff, Harbaugh would have won Coach of the Year and cemented his place as one of the top 3-5 coaches in college football.

OSU has the players to win every single game—they were favored to win the previous 51 games they played in. It’s not the opposing coaching that makes the difference.  It’s simply a case of whether the OSU are fully motivated and focused. And because they are cocky college kids that can get full of themselves by reading the social media hype, there is going to be that occasional game where they are unfocused and can be had.

I liken OSU to an NBA championship caliber team that gets beat by a bottom dweller on some weeknight in February and then goes to squash all comers in the playoffs. It’s impossible to get up for every single game over the course of a long season—especially 18-21 year old kids.  But in games that they do get up for, they are going to win because they simply have the better talent.

Unfortunately for U-M, they are never going to overlook Michigan—primarily because of their pure hatred for Michigan, which is a major cultural advantage ingrained into their players from birth.  The other major factor working against Michigan at this point is the timing of the game.  When you lose still counts, so with “The Game” always falling on the last weekend of the season there is usualy even more riding on the line, whereas there is still a chance to overcome a mid-season loss to an also-ran.  All the more reason why we will always get OSU’s best shot making it next to impossible for us to beat them.

I posted it last night in one of the deleted threads—from ‘33 to ‘67, Minnesota actually held a 17-16-2 advantage over U-M. From ‘68 on, Minnesota’s record vs. U-M is 4-41. If you would have told a Minnesota fan at the conclusion of the1967 game to enjoy your victory and that they would only beat U-M four more times over the course of the next 51 years, they would have laughed you right out of the stadium. So, things can and do change on a dime.  We’re in the midst of a 2-16 run and there’s no guarantee things are ever going to reverse themselves—regardless of who is doing the coaching.

DPJ showed heart fighting for that first down.

11/24/2018 - 9:43pm I thought he was the best…

I thought he was the best defender on the team last year.  I've wondered if he bulked up a little too much and lost some of his speed and acceleration that made him such an effective defender last year.  Then again, he really made his name against Minnesota, so could just be another case of a U-M player padding their stats against meaningless competition.

11/24/2018 - 9:14pm Pretty much every big game…

Pretty much every big game in the last twenty years.  Don't limit this just to Harbaugh.  This is an epidemic that goes back four coaches.  With that said, I agree that their performance will likely be underwhelming.

11/24/2018 - 9:12pm If today was Gary's last…

If today was Gary's last game and I had to sum up his U-M career in one word, it would have to be underwhelming.  I feel like we are still waiting for that breakout game--especially in a game that matters.

As much as I hate to say it, if we want to reverse this current 2-16 slide we are in the midst of, we probably need to hire Day before OSU does it.  Might be time to hire another creative outsider from the OSU coaching tree.  Worked once.

Whatever bowl we get to, you can probably bank on the likes of Bush, Long, Gary, Winovich, et. al. not playing in it.

Sadly, Michigan Arrogance keeps staff and players (and fans) alike from adopting the underdog mindset necessary to beat a superior program like Ohio State.

11/06/2018 - 7:16am If you actually read my post…

If you actually read my post, you’d see that I basically said I’m willing to forgive him for screwing up the PSU QBs multiple times throughout the game.  Not being able to differentiate between Higdon and Evans on the other hand—two players that play or look nothing alike—is a major problem. By the way, I like Brandy too—as a a Michigan Man and a color commentator.  Just not as a PBP man. He’s terrible and it’s a shame Michigan has put him a position to be terrible.  Go out and hire a real PBP man.  This fan base deserves one.

You didn’t need to see the game to hear him go back and forth on who had the ball—first it was Higdon, no wait it was Evans— or to hear Dierdorf tell you that it was Stevens when Brandstatter said it was McSorely.  And we’re not talking isolated incidents.

08/04/2018 - 9:59pm Warinner was not the highest…

Warinner was not the highest ranking official at OSU.  The head football coach at OSU is.  Warinner did not have hiring and firing power. The head football coach at OSU does.  The head football coach at OSU can basically do anything he wants short of firing the school president, and even that is debatable.  Anyone remember when E. Gordon Gee said, "Let me be very clear. I'm just hoping the coach doesn't dismiss me."?  The head football coach at OSU does not need to wait for his "boss" to get rid of a bad dude on his staff.  He has the power to do that on his own.  The idea that Meyer was powerless to do anything about Smith other than make a report to his boss is ludicrous.

Stop awarding seven points for every "goal" scored in the NFL and you would end up with an average final score of roughly 4-2--the exact score of the World Cup final.
