Tate Martell is a Hurricane
It’s official, he’s announced that he’s off to Miami and Fields’ eligibility is suddenly that much more interesting.

I heard my trash guy was quiting so I gave him the same speech. I really think he couldve been the next Tom Brady.... of sanitation engineers.

What a saint. A grown man gives a lecture to a complete stranger probably 20-30 years younger than him over the internet and the advice wasn’t followed. We appreciated what you were trying to do and sorry that those darned kids didn’t listen to you.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:24 AM ^
I think my favorite part of this is that you wrote all that and think something is wrong with him. Wow.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:58 AM ^
Ok that’s weird for you to do that.
January 16th, 2019 at 10:36 AM ^
Yeah HE'S the problem in this scenario....Good lord
January 16th, 2019 at 3:27 AM ^
Who's that?
January 16th, 2019 at 4:51 AM ^
Don't swing and miss twice, Tathan.
January 16th, 2019 at 6:05 AM ^
Sorry, too much info in your headline. Try "Rival Transfer". Please try to keep up with the other stellar threads that preceded this one. /s
January 16th, 2019 at 6:08 AM ^
Fields will be eligible. Raback it.
January 16th, 2019 at 6:13 AM ^
Where does Jalen Hurst transfer to now, and will he be immediately eligible?
Whatever the case, it is hilarious that the QB predicament at OSU is now rocky.
January 16th, 2019 at 6:22 AM ^
Hurts graduated and is immediately eligible.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:00 AM ^
I thought that Hurt would end up at Miami-- if he does, Tate's number 2 again.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:08 AM ^
Will things work out for OSU?
Will UM basketball have a player in the Mcdonalds all american game.
Will Mr. March -Tom Izzo continue his tourney magic?
Stay tuned!
January 16th, 2019 at 7:09 AM ^
Tate is transferring to Miami? Where have I heard that before?
if the pattern holds, he won’t actually enroll there, but will go to San Jose State and the Hawaii and then the CFL.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
Any update on Jim Harbaugh recruiting preschoolers?
January 16th, 2019 at 7:12 AM ^
Wouldn’t you think Georgia would fight the NCAA on allowing immediate eligibility? Not doing so would seem to admit that their campus has a hostile racial environment. While we may think the reasons for transfer are pretty transparent, even just keeping to football, I wouldn’t think they would want other coaches running around negative recruting on that “admission”.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:39 AM ^
This one is likely to become sticky. Cooler heads will probably want to wait and see what really was going on a Georgia, especially on the baseball team, and whether the kid has a real case. You're right that a finding for Fields would not cast a kind light on Georgia.
January 16th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
Georgia already showed their hand when they suspended the player who made thre racist comments, essentially admitting it happened
January 16th, 2019 at 7:29 AM ^
I believe Fields' sister is committed to Georgia to play softball. If the family is okay with her going how bad can the racism be at the university? To me it's an isolated incident and not indicative of the the university as a whole.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:35 AM ^
I don't blame him and I'm sure it has to be frustrating for him, but boy the way he handled his business on Twitter was not only terrible but also a bunch of bold faced lies. I would never trust a guy that goes to those lengths to say what he's going to do and call out others who then subsequently does the opposite. That is not a good sign for a guy's values.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
Fields' waiver is a direct reflection of the power of OSU's AD (is it still Gene Smith?). This is why AD's get the big money, not hiring womens volleyball coaches. It's also why lifetime administrators are better than CEOs or football players/ announcers (e.g. Lynn Swan).
January 16th, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
If OSU has any balls they’ll threaten a suit. Of course, it’d likley be dismissed, but the media attention would be epic. The ncaa makes millions off the backs of young black kids. Could you imagine the reaction in the current media climate if they told a black kid “we think you felt plenty safe and being called the N word doesn’t get you a waiver” LMAO Not going to happen. There would be protest in Indy.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:39 AM ^
kids really can get screwed in recruiting. Tate would have been perfect as a successor to Barrett if the Ohio State offense had remained what it was. Sort of like the QB who transferred in to Michigan (drawing a blank on his name) who would have been fine in Lloyd’s offense, but suddenly Rrod was running the show. A good reason not to get upset when someone transfers out for whatever reason, recruits need to look out for themselves. That said, would be super sweet if Fields is not declared eligible to play this year.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:52 AM ^
Threet. He was at Georgia Tech when Johnson was hired. So he transfers to Michigan and gets stuck with RR.
January 16th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
Interesting. This looks like the new coaching staff has very little faith in N'Kosi Perry
January 16th, 2019 at 8:54 AM ^
Unpopular opinion: I think this is bad for Michigan in the big picture. Two reasons:
- This makes it more likely for the NCCA to grant a waiver since they won't want one of their prized bulls not to have a QB this year
- It also most likely means the Air-Raid or power-spread with more Air-Raid then run tendencies is in Columbus to stay. Tate could not run that type of office as well as Haskins or hypothetically Fields could. Not good for us considering that seems to be our defensive kryptonite.
January 16th, 2019 at 12:22 PM ^
I still have yet to see Fields throw a ball during a game. I would hold off on the whole air raid until its proven
January 16th, 2019 at 8:57 AM ^
So, since Ryan Day has taken over, the Bucks have: Landed their lowest recruiting class in 10(?) years - and have had around 3 decommits; Lost Haskins to Draft (this may have been inevitable, but remember he only has 1 yr of starting experience); Lost Tathan to Miami; Made hires of 3 former UM assistants (looks a little 'thirsty' as the kids say) and brought in Justin Fields who ma/may not have a case for eligibility next year. Yet, the overall rhetoric is that he is some kind of wunderkind.
Meanwhile, Harbz landed a Top 4 (ESPN) class for 2019 (including a flip back of Dax); Kept multiple starters in Ann Arbor for 2019; Hired away Bama's Co-OC and turned over the keys and Hired away BC's co-DC and Top 20 ACC recruiter. Yet, the rhetoric (until more recently) was that he has lost it and M is destined to be good not great for eternity.
Maybe let's pump the brakes here?
January 16th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
In 2 months, OSU has waxed UM, landed Harrison which everyone thought was going to UM for a while, won the Rose Bowl, taken 2 of Michigans defensive coaches and replaced the defensive staff for the most part (which was needed), and brought in a QB that is the 3rd highest rated QB in the ranking era. They are 13th in the country with their recruiting class with only 16 commits without Fields, and have the 4th best per recruit ranking in the country with 3 5 stars.
UM went from national title hopes on their revenge tour to getting waxed in Columbus, losing Harrison which they really needed, got waxed in their bowl game, lost 2 of their defensive coaches to their rival, and have landed at 8th (5 spots higher than OSU) in their team ranking on 27 commits with only 1 5 star and a per recruit average 2 points lower than OSU. They lost the bulk of their defensive firepower to the NFL or graduation. They made some decent hires that are TBD.
OSU average recruit ranking: 92.27
UM average recruit ranking: 90.42
It's all about how you spin it right?
January 16th, 2019 at 9:35 AM ^
He seems like a douche so it’s a good fit.
January 16th, 2019 at 9:42 AM ^
Didn’t Tathan Forcier transfer to Miami too? How’d that work out?
January 16th, 2019 at 11:21 AM ^
Not sure if this pops up elsewhere in this thread (much of which is devoted to question like "what is racism?" and "is Ohio racist?", surprisingly), but it's worth pointing out that Tathan-to-the-U makes it a lot more likely that Clemson QB transfer ends up in our division, at Maryland. But would he have to sit out?
January 16th, 2019 at 11:45 AM ^
Tate’s a wuss for running his mouth and transferring.
On Fields. Their are racist people everywhere. He’s transferring because he’s not the starter. Has nothing to do with Georgia. He can go North, South, East, West. When your playing in a stadium of over 100,000 people I can almost guarantee someone in the stands will say the N word about somebody. That includes Michigan, Ohio State, UCLA, Syracuse, Georgia, or any university. Anyone who thinks different is fooling themselves.
January 16th, 2019 at 11:49 AM ^
Odd that he bolted unless Fields being eligible is a known thing in Osu circles.
Don't think he was good fit for Day's offense. Not a skill set that puts fear in opponents. Doubt that any one here was worried about Tate picking up after Haskins.
After a lot of tough competitor talk...interesting.
January 16th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Oh crap. I enjoyed him coming in during goal line situations. Well there goes our only advantage...
January 16th, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
hmmmmmm...
January 16th, 2019 at 12:36 PM ^
I think I speak for most Buckeyes when I wish him luck and hope he's eligible in 2019.
Now where's my cooler
January 16th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
Fields has a pretty good shot at the waiver. He was interested in joining the team, and a guy on the team called him a racial slur. If he uses his hopes to play baseball as the main defense, he has a damn good shot.
I'm all for players being able to transfer and play when coaches are allowed to sign kids then go to another job in the same week.
January 16th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
I don't think being called a racial slur should be enough for immediate eligibility. Should everyone on MSU been able to transfer due to Reschke?
January 16th, 2019 at 1:57 PM ^
Maybe. Although that is slightly different because a vast majority of MSU's team is black, and the entire Georgia baseball team is white
Clearly his motive is just to transfer and play football. I'm just saying they could make a compelling case that would give the NCAA bad press if they reject it. If I'm being honest, Shea probably shouldn't have been granted the waiver under the rules, but it was good PR for him to be granted the waiver
January 16th, 2019 at 2:02 PM ^
It doesn't really matter though. If he wanted to play for Michigan, we'd all say he should be granted the waiver (and vice versa). It's dumb to really argue it. The kid will have a decent case and he hired Shea's lawyers, so I'm going to err on the side of him being elligible. Just looking at this objectively
I also think it's just a bad look for a bunch of middle aged white men to say how a 19 year old black kid should feel about being called the N word
January 16th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
No one should say how he should feel. That doesn’t change the fact that he’s transferring because he’s not the starter. If he was coming to Michigan I’d cheer my ass off for him to be eligible, but I still would feel exactly the same. It’s also okay for people to have an opinion on this. No matter your race. And if you don’t think he should be immediately eligible it doesn’t make you a racist.
Shea left a school that was falling under NCAA sanctions and lost their coach because of it. How’s that the same? They’re two totally different situations.
Do you think he’d be transferring if he was the starter? But I also think he’ll be eligible, but that’s because the NCAA doesn’t want to look bad.
January 16th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Your second paragraph:
There's actual legislation in the NCAA rules that say the only people that should be granted a waiver in that circumstance are rising seniors. That's why Shea had to lawyer up - there were rules written verbatim that said he shouldn't be elligible.
Hardship waiver is slightly more vague.
January 16th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
I won’t dispute that since I don’t read the NCAA transfer rule book, but that doesn’t change that their reasons for transferring are different. One guy transferred due to NCAA sanctions. The other is either transferring because he’s not the starter, or because he doesn’t feel safe at Georgia due to a baseball teammate saying the N word in the stands. And as any University should he was given the boot because of it.
As others have pointed out they should do away with the rule all together if he’s granted eligibility because of it. He could transfer to any university in the country, and I guarantee someone at that university will use the N word in reference to him or someone on the team. It’s not right, but that’s how the world is. Both he and his lawyer know that. If he was coming to Michigan I’d cheer for him to be eligible, but I don't think he should be granted a waiver.
January 16th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
Apparently, according to 247Sports, Martell is "lawyered up" to get immediate eligibility. These 2 ass clowns are making a mockery of the transfer process. Made a bad decision, man up instead of going the other way! Maybe Martell heard "put his racist cracker ass into the game". Par for the course in the Horseshoe.
January 16th, 2019 at 2:18 PM ^
Shea was elligible because of lies that Hugh Freeze told him.
Tate's previous coach was Urban Meyer...
January 16th, 2019 at 3:34 PM ^
So this all but ensures Fields will be eligible next season. The NCAA is so soft.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:39 PM ^
Fields will be eligible, come on writing is on the wall. Tate doesn’t leave unless he knows fields is out for a year.
