Shea Patterson Returning For Senior Year
Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson repeatedly has said during the season his experience with the Wolverines has been the best of his football life.
With that in mind, Patterson has decided to return to the Wolverines for his final year of eligibility, he told The Detroit News on Friday.
“I think my original plan was to come here and help the team out as much as I could,” Patterson, who transferred from Ole Miss a year ago, told The News. “The thoughts were maybe come out after one year, so I think there might have been some speculation there. At this point, I feel like everybody thinks I’m coming back. Excited to get that out there so they know.”
Unless Patterson has the same injury fate that Wilton Speight did this will be the first time in Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan that he has returning starter at QB for most of the year.

Do you think both Milton and DMac stay?
December 22nd, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
I sure hope DCaf stays. He should be our starter in 2020 and 2021.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
Awesome. Glad he is coming back.
This better put Harbaugh on notice to actually design some unique and effective plays for Shea next year. I think Ann Arbor will riot if Shea goes back to his usual 12/15/150/1 TD stat line that he pretty much had for most of the year--it'd be such a waste of his talent.
December 21st, 2018 at 7:02 PM ^
Is the issue play design or lack of plays?
That stat line is highly efficient. It's also pretty effective when the running game is working and the game is a blowout (see PSU, Neb., WMU, SMU, Wisc.)

Who knows?
But at minimum, this is a huge boost to the offense in terms of comfort and familiarity with each other. Not only with Shea, his receivers, etc, but also Harbaugh knows his capabilities and likely trusts him a hell of a lot more. This spring they can pretty much give Shea a huge % of the snaps knowing he’s the likely starter. No NCAA uncertainties hanging overhead. And Shea now likely can go from understanding the playbook to total mastery
Not to mention 2nd year Warriner has the OL who only graduates one guy & all but the true freshmen will understand his terminology and concepts.
The ONE key position we are losing is Higdon at RB. Even then, we’ve still got about 2-3 decent veteran options there until Zach Charbonnet can get up to speed and familiar with the system—which is usually pretty doable if it’s a talented RB which ZC is.
Bottom line is, barring catastrophic injury or truly dumb or uninspired play calling, this offense has a huge ceiling.
December 22nd, 2018 at 9:21 AM ^
An offense can be efficient and score slot of points but if it doesn’t pass the Pass -a-Lot spread eye test people will complain. It seems like people will take an incomplete short crossing route over a 2 yard run any day.
Yes. I’d like more passing. Or to have the o line hulk up to the days of 90’s o line performances.
I dont care. We were good this year. We can really get better next year.

in michigan football history now... i love this kid ... go blue.....!!!!!!
December 21st, 2018 at 5:29 PM ^
Good news for pretty much everyone involved with Michigan football not named McCaffery.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
I don’t see this as bad new for McCaffrey. It’s not like he’s an older player, he’ll only be a redshirt sophomore. Plus he’s still underweight by 10-15 lbs so the extra year will help in that regard. He’s also going to get a bunch of reps next year, I’d guess even more than this year. Then he’ll come in as the unquestioned starter as a RS junior with 2 years of starting time left.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
Did you misspell Peters?
December 21st, 2018 at 5:55 PM ^
Must be because Michigan only has a McCaffrey.
December 21st, 2018 at 8:03 PM ^
That is a very attractive young woman.
December 21st, 2018 at 9:18 PM ^
If you look real carefully, you can see her right cheek has the split block M.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
YAY! Hopefully Dylan doesn't transfer.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
Peters is much more likely to transfer. Dylan will still have 2 years.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
Why would Dylan transfer?
He looks like a lock to start after Shea graduates and would have two years to earn a draft spot. He is #2 on the depth chart and a snap away from playing.
Or transfer and sit out a year and learn a new offense? Makes zero sense.
Peters makes sense.
December 21st, 2018 at 6:55 PM ^
I highly doubtful Dylan would transfer because of this. I'd imagine the loser of the McCaffrey/Milton battle will likely leave though.
December 22nd, 2018 at 7:45 PM ^
That's a crazy take. Milton completed less than 50% of his passes as a HS player. He's a million miles behind McCaffrey.

Great news. Love his attitude. Pep better open up the playbook and get more creative.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:46 PM ^
Yeah Pep has full control of our offense! Damn that horse is tired. I hope your insiders stop lying to you one day!!!
December 21st, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
This is the best news I’ve heard since Wednesday morning. Now we need to open the playbook up and let him loose! We should score 60 at least 3 times next year.

HAIL our Mineral King!

That dude has nice shoes and moves. Is that new castle 40 ouncers or some Russian 3 buck chuck?

Krokodil is a helluva drug.
December 21st, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
Plus Dylan has to recover from a broken collarbone. This will likely set him back in the weight gain department. That extra year of tutelidge under Harbaugh and with Shea passing down tidbits won’t hurt his potential in the slightest.

Merry Christmas!!! I think this deserves its own posbang
December 21st, 2018 at 6:40 PM ^
This offense has a real chance to be one of the best we've seen in a long time around here, even with whatever real or perceived issues people may see with Pep.
December 21st, 2018 at 7:09 PM ^
Let's air it out next year coach! That offense is bringing back a lot of experienced starters, let's open up the playbook.
December 21st, 2018 at 7:25 PM ^
A returning qb, OC, HC, OL coach, and a mostly intact OL? What is this, 1989?
December 21st, 2018 at 8:01 PM ^
Shea to stay, Yay!
December 21st, 2018 at 8:05 PM ^
Hooray!!! Thanks Shea. Go blue!
December 21st, 2018 at 8:37 PM ^
'19 = better UM team and better record, more success including a victory on November 30th, 2019
Book it!
December 21st, 2018 at 8:39 PM ^
Senior QB + 3 STUD junior WR = ???
The answer better not be 30 rushes per game and an offense ill-equipped to compete in a shootout vs OSU. Jim needs to open up the offense early and often so it is a fine tuned machine by the end of the season no matter what type of game they are in.
December 21st, 2018 at 8:45 PM ^
Very excited to have him back! Best QB we've had in a long, long time. Makes everyone around him better.
My favorite moment of the 2018 season was when he and Higdon fumbled the handoff and he went straight to Don Brown, grabbed his shirt, and told him to get him the ball back so he could fix it.
Next possession, 79 yard TD pass.
December 21st, 2018 at 8:56 PM ^
I take back all the bad things I said about you (minus the BTC argument), MK.
December 21st, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
will be awkward when he's beaten out by DM
<ducks>
December 22nd, 2018 at 10:08 AM ^
I just hope Harbaugh allows for a real QB competition and is honest with himself about who really wins it. I think it's a real possibility that McCaffrey is the more talented and dynamic QB.
December 22nd, 2018 at 7:47 PM ^
If we're going to run the QB, then we need two capable options. Milton isn't one of those two.
December 21st, 2018 at 9:21 PM ^
Best news to bookend the week!
December 21st, 2018 at 9:28 PM ^
Love Shea Patterson. So excited to have him back!!!
December 21st, 2018 at 9:48 PM ^
This deserves a ... FUCK YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sugar Shea going to win the Heisman. Let's go Jimbo ... take the governor off that offensive engine and give her some gas ! MOAR passing and RPO.

This is what we need. This Toledo kid gets it. Go Blue !!!
quote from Detroit News:
“I’ve been thinking about it for the past month, ever since after that game,” Patterson said of mulling his future. “I just thought to myself there’s no way in hell I’m leaving this place on that note. Regardless of a draft grade, whatever the case may be, I would never end my career with an opportunity to come back with a loss to that team. That’s the one thing that has ignited me. I think one of the biggest things that impacted me coming back – one of them – was that last game in Columbus.
“I just felt we worked so hard and had such a good season leading up to that game. I was more upset that I couldn’t do enough to get us a win. I love the guys so much and let down the Michigan fan base, and I just felt like we all did that that day. That just brought a lot of emotions. Anger. I think anger was the biggest one. I hated to lose and even more, I hated to lose to them, especially with what we had in front of us.”

Excellent news for Michigan football and a smart decision by Patterson.
