Teddy KGB style ...

10/30/2018 - 7:27am Gus is great at big play…

Gus is great at big play announcing but lacks football knowledge ... An end around is not a reverse.  He misses the call like 4 times in the game.

10/20/2018 - 5:45pm Are you kidding me with this…

Are you kidding me with this? The guy just went 10-3 last year.  And he beat Penn State last week.  Our defense was just that much better than any other unit on the field.  Let’s not pour dirt on the disrespekt grave just yet.

09/30/2018 - 10:12am We were also trying to bleed…

We were also trying to bleed clock on those middle runs on first down.  By that point we were in the mode of trying to make 3rd manageable.  I think Fitz just did a good job having The Gaz stunt to the interior and back-fill with Paddy.  That disruption was targeted to keep us from getting the 3 or 4 yard gain on first down.  That’s why the plays where Patterson kept it and Higdon cut back were effective.  Everything is a chess match. You can’t just dial up the “right” call in every situation - there is another team and coach out there afterall.

09/30/2018 - 10:02am Every team’s favorite player…

Every team’s favorite player is the second string QB.

The Hawt Take above has to be sarcasm right?!?!

09/30/2018 - 10:01am Well, he was instructed to…

Well, he was instructed to keep it on a couple plays in the RO run game ...  Both would have been first downs and big gainers if it wasn’t for some suspect ref holding call BS.

I agree that Harbaugh is limiting the times he does this.  Gotta keep the QB healthy.  It is a good change of pace now and could be key for gashing better defenses down the road.

09/29/2018 - 9:32pm Seems like my take as well. …

Seems like my take as well.  But people love to get pissy because they think they understand play calling but never played a snap outside of Madden 2K18.  You have to run up the middle to keep a stacked box honest ... That leads to big gains on the edges.

09/29/2018 - 9:28pm I don’t understand our…

I don’t understand our fanbase’s need to tear our coaching staff down.  We could simply give credit to Fitzgerald for getting his team pumped and executing a gameplan to start the game.  We weathered the body blows and responded.  Give me a fucking break.

09/06/2018 - 11:16am Please watch the replay of…

Please watch the replay of the ND player who tattooed McKeon.  The ND linebacker left his feet as he jumped up and through McKeon while leading with the crown of his helmet. The direct movement of the linebacker made helmet to helmet contact a possibility.  McKeon was defenseless because he just caught the ball turned away from the defender.  I am sorry, but that seems to fit the definition of a targeting call - even if not directly spelled out to the letter of the rule.  There was intent to hit McKeon with the helmet in a position where McKeon couldn’t protect himself.  Sorry to disagree.

08/31/2018 - 6:49am My parents had season…

My parents had season tickets when I was a kid so they went to most of the home games without me in tow.  I went to probably 2 games a year with my dad and / or mom.  So when I wasn’t going, I got to spend the day with my grandfather.  He died years ago, but I still think of him when the football season starts.  He was the real wolverine fan in our family - the OG who started the love.  Before game time, he’d tell me stories of the times he was in the stadium (throwing hats when AC scored against Indiana) or when he wasn’t (skipping the game the week I was born).  We always did this thing - we’d turn the TV on to watch the game but listen to the M announcers on the radio.  I try to do this from time to time still, because of him, but it rarely syncs well in the world of HD.  Excited to start this season in South Bend and I’ll make sure to say a little something to the heavens from the stands - hoping he brings us a victory against the golden domers.  Go blue!

08/30/2018 - 12:24pm Items like bitcoin work well…

Items like bitcoin work well for the millionaires of the world betting on amateur sports.  But try telling the parents of the kid you're trying to buy at OSU, Bama, or Clemson or get an in as an agent / client relationship that they'll be receiving internet currency.  I have to imagine the look would be of shock / awe / horror.  Cold hard cash is still rather untraceable in our economy and the basis for all dealings like this. Take that scene from Blue Chips where they give Butch McRae's mom a house and imagine a world where they deposit bitcoin into her anonymous account to then buy her own house with. I don't think that would fly yet.

Hit the Hydration Station in the south end of the stadium. Cups are small but I grab one or two on the way in and out from the Pioneer tailgate area.

02/07/2018 - 12:25pm I disagree with your

I disagree with your assessment of expectations because they lack context. Here is Dabo Swinney’s record at Clemson:
2008 4-3 (took over mid-season for a failing program)
2009 9-5
2010 6-7
2011 10-4
2012 11-2

I would argue that our “down year” is better. And Dabo didn’t have the advantageous senior laden class that Jim had in Year 2. I honestly think Jim played to the strengths of that team to WIN instead of blowing it up to rebuild in his model (ala Rich Rod). Think of as such and you’re probably more on track.
Year 1 as a fact finding mission.
Year 2 as leading a senior team in what they do best.
Year 3 as a down blip because of youth, coach turnover, scheme changes.

It leaves Year 4 as a chance, with experience and consistent coaching to surpass what a coach like Dabo did and have Michigan humming. I agree that JH is the coach we want and need. His rise is just different and shouldn’t be considered in the same context of other power programs who turned it around.

02/04/2018 - 10:27am I tell them to make sure to

I tell them to make sure to use commas ... “will have won 6, more than any other player”.

Then I tell them that Dylan is probably just a Sparty in hiding who will forever have an inferiority complex over the fact U of M has a QB that started 50/50 his senior year and is now the GOAT. You could combine Smoker, Cousins, Cook and never get there. Brady is the greatest story in NFL history - with his late draft pick with terrible combine numbers and transition from Bledsoe to MVPs, all the SBs, and marrying a super model.

01/09/2018 - 8:25am Your point is valid about a

Your point is valid about a team like Stanford being able to pull multiple stars away from the machine that is Bama. But I think you miss the greater point here ... When these kids were impressionable younger football players they watched a Stanford team get put back on the map by our very own coach and then continued on with Shaw. They had some amazing wins over USC and Oregon that took national spotlight. They had players like Luck and McCafferey starring on a big stage in bowl games. Where is Michigan? Those same kids watched a program implode with RichRod and Hoke. The only star we had was Denard. But it’s not like we were playing multiple big bowl games in a row. You need some sustained excellence to turn the tide in recruiting. Be good. Get stars. Have stars shine. More want to come. Win even bigger and better. Nothing changes over night even if we wished it did.

01/02/2018 - 8:39pm I’ll get in on the positive

I’ll get in on the positive train. I have been talking people off the ledge for two days. Next year will be a special one for this program. Book it.

01/01/2018 - 9:47pm It was a great game.

It was a great game. Probably a Top 5 all-time based on teams, individual player stories, programs, semifinal, etc. But might not even be the second best Rose Bowl ever. Last year’s Penn State vs USC was pretty epic. Texas vs USC or Texas vs Michigan in the 2000s were pretty amazing back to back. There was a Wisky vs UCLA in the late 90s I remember being pretty back and forth.

I hope he does well wherever he goes. He kept positive in spite of injuries, fan dislike, junk o-lines, etc. OTOH, excited to see the QB battle royal of BP, McCaff, Milton, and (I guess fingers crossed) Shea Patterson.

Dude ... They’re cows. Of course they’re easy. The most fight you’ll get is a moo as you grab them by the haunches.

11/22/2017 - 6:39pm I am worried about this team

I am worried about this team ...
1) Lack a floor general. This 3-headed monster at PG looks disjointed.
2) We struggle to hit foul shots. Teske, Matthews, Moe (still early this season) are all laying bricks at the charity stripe.
3) We seem a little WEAK inside. Lacking the gritty rebound, important put-back, or finishing through the foul.

I have faith in JB. I think they’ll improve as the season goes on. But right now I see PAIN when we play UNC and a rough go in the B1G. Hoping these kids get in sync soon.

11/21/2017 - 1:08pm I don't disagree with your

I don't disagree with your assessment that, with all the factors going for us like year 2 of offensive scheme / developing o-line talent / almost entire returning defense, we should be better than 10-3.  The BS is when you spill that over to this year when all of those things were against us.

11/21/2017 - 1:01pm I totally just did the same

I totally just did the same thing ... For this entire season - especially after the MSU game - I have commented on this blog and talked to my friends / family in a similar vein.  This season was always going to be a challenge - new offense coordinators / scheme, freshmen WRs, replacing Jake Butt, etc - without having to play duck-duck-goose with your QBs.

Sorry we lost to MSU in a monsoon - that stung.  Sorry we got hamblasted by Penn State - they were better.  Sorry we got beat by Wisky after our promising young QB got carted off in front of our young team.  But mostly ... I am sorry we beat Florida so soundly.  It gave friends, neighbors, rivals, and sportswriters ammo to say we're behind the chains with improvement.

We need to learn to think about things in context.  Which is why I particularly like the Greater Than / Less Than summary.  Next year's schedule is rough.  But the talent / experience returning coupled with year 2 of offense scheme promises to be special.  Just have faith and patience.

Personal choice ... ReBBQ in Ferndale. Served out of a food truck stationary in a liquor store parking lot. Everything comes in styrofoam containers. Amazing sides like collared greens and smoked mac-n-cheese. If you can catch them on smoked kielbasa and pierogi night, to go with the brisket, even better!!

11/16/2017 - 11:55am Great Dane Pub off Doty

Great Dane Pub off Doty Street.  Good food.  Great beer.  And it is a good hangout for fans.  We went there in 2007 after the game Mallett started in place of injured Henne.  Even though we lost the fans bought us beer, shared some good laughs, and shared common rooting stances for the later games.  Camp Randall is an excellent experience.  Have fun in a pretty awesome college town.

11/11/2017 - 10:13am Ohio State - I think the

Ohio State - I think the Buckeyes roll because of last week, Geiger windmill, etc ... OSU to cover.
Minnesota - I think we get more credit for our run offense than the gophers bad defense.
Iowa State - Playing good defense in a conference without it. This gets them past OSU.
Michigan - I think the running game keeps rolling. We cover.
Iowa - I wouldn’t sleep on Ferentz keeping this close. No win. But a tight ball game.
ND - Something about this team. And I like the 3.5 line. Leaves the door cracked for a FG game at end.

10/28/2017 - 8:14am Thank you, blog gods, for

Thank you, blog gods, for bringing back HOCKEY. I missed hearing about good goaltending and advantageous offense. The end of the Red era was tough. It seems like Mel is getting us rolling again but it will take some time. Go blue!

10/27/2017 - 12:33pm I’ll play this game

I’ll play this game ...
Penn State
NC State

In particular, I really like those lines for Minny and Florida. Not sure we can cover ours ... But I certainly am hoping so. I assume we “take a step forward” on offense his week only because Rutgers is so garbage.

10/27/2017 - 6:36am Why can we not struggle on

Why can we not struggle on offense this year with all the shitstorm of things ... New passing coord, fresh o-line, new line coach, injured QB, and freshmen WRs ... And instantly be bad next year? Teams don’t always improve over the year before when other factors are involved - like I listed above. The hot take that our record will be worse this year and we don’t look great equals next year can’t be good - I just don’t get it. Teams learn and improve with consistent coaching. Next year’s schedule is tough, but they always are nowadays. Some team always surprises. Some team is scheduled to get playoff hype.

Food for thought ... 96 we went 8-4, were worried about who would QB, and then you know how 97 went. Heck, Sparty went 3-9 last year and now is 6-1 with a favorable schedule to challenge the East.

10/26/2017 - 12:39pm Nice recipe Smokin Joe!!!

Nice recipe Smokin Joe!!!

Great minds think alike ... My wife runs a food blog where she made something similar as part of a Halloween party plate for a client. There were some other “spooky” items as well - like apple monsters.

10/24/2017 - 11:59am I tend to agree with you. We

I tend to agree with you. We are talking about a lot more than just a young talented OC. Poor o-line recruiting by Hoke. New passing game coordinator. New o-line coach. Different position coaches. Young receivers. Loss of starting QB. You can’t say Drev is The Specific Cause of this turd product on the field.

In fact, the Penn State game was more on poor D play than anything. You knew a rock fight was necessary to win. You let Barkley go nuts in the first quarter. I know Penn State had a bye week, motivation, skill position advantage, etc. But our D looked young and scared.

One key to performance is year-over-year consistency of staff. Prime example up the road ... Sparty goes 3-9 and keeps its staff in-tact. Staff adapts, once they understand personnel, and find a steady gameplan for winning. And that doesn’t include the youth angle - just the consistent coaching. Add youth with common coaching and it is reasonable to expect a solid to impressive jump next season.

10/24/2017 - 6:08am He just shook up his

He just shook up his offensive staff ... Pep as passing coordinator. Frey as o-line coach. Plus position shuffling due to Wheatley leaving. It takes time for a team to learn with new coordinators. Make a switch again, after one year, and we probably do this all over again. I’d rather ride it out. It doesn’t work next year, when the team matures in regard to experience, and I am all for changing the offensive staff.

10/23/2017 - 7:23pm Do you only listen to The

Do you only listen to The Ticket ... All of your so called “hot takes” came directly from Valenti. Actually, Mike is that you?!?! The guy who says Michigan blows and Harbaugh ain’t worth the dough. But also called for PJ Fleck when Dantonio went 3-9 last season.

At the very least ... Don’t make your hot takes be the low hanging fruit. Focus on how Pep and Drevno seem to have an identity crisis. Or how Harbaugh seems to not be adapting to his personnel. But the decades without relevance angle is sooooo played out.

Littler ... Using the old Queens English dictionary. Upvote!

10/14/2017 - 5:14pm Not sure that is true if TOP

Not sure that is true if TOP is as skewed as today. With Higdon running it that well / often and mixing in play action you can kill the number of possessions. That is what we’ll need to focus on the rest of the year. Defense can probably limit

10/08/2017 - 3:37pm This is Frey’s first season

This is Frey’s first season back as o-line coach. He did really well at Indiana after his time with Rich Rod. He’s had one off-season with a void from Hoke recruiting to move towards a zone blocking scheme. I like Dantonio has done with 2 and 3 stars but they’ve also had consistent coaching and seriously got pawned by our d-line anyway.

10/08/2017 - 2:09pm I was wondering this aloud

I was wondering this aloud with some buddies last week. I think there must be a level of burning desire within the underdog role. At Stanford all success was success - could have been a steady climb instead of a 3-4 year rapid rise and fans / program / team would have been ecstatic. I feel the expectation at a blue blood is to win, and win big. Players who commit must feel like they are the top of the game ... Not the guy who everybody overlooked. That pressure must be even bigger on Harbaugh - school you played for in a dumpster fire before you came back to coach.

Maybe this loss helps to flip that switch on offense. They need the swagger of being a disrespected young group that the defense established. Maybe this loss helps to make sense of Harbaugh realizing there are good coaches in a deep league like the B1G - the PAC-10 probably wasn’t this competitive back then in terms of big name coaching talent. Beat Carroll and Kelly and you were head of the pack.

The worse possible situation is that Harbaugh is a guy without a QB. Maybe it was Luck all along. One must hope not - given the rest of his record without the guy. But that could have been the biggest improvement Stanford got.

10/05/2017 - 11:33am Not scary but ...

Terror on Tillson in Romeo is quite the sight to see. It it this old farmhouse street where every house decorates. They have pirate ships, insane asylums, haunted circuses, skeletons playing hockey, etc. Each house kind of has a theme. Like I said, totally not scary. But if you’re a fan of decorating for halloween then this is definitely a place to head too!!!

09/24/2017 - 12:22pm Frey has them running a zone

Frey has them running a zone blocking scheme vs the power they were running the last two years. I think it just takes time to break in new starters - biggest is taking your experienced center and moving him to LT while you have a geeen right side of the line. Add to it a scheme change and you're beginning to take steps backwards. I think the bye week will help drill some issues found in film and we'll look much much better against Sparty in two weeks.
