Per Gil Brandt: Haskins leaning heavily toward going Pro

Submitted by The Baughz on December 10th, 2018 at 4:25 PM

Gil Brandt just posted on Twitter that he believes Haskins is heavily leaning toward going to the NFL. Brandt is a big time NFL scout and is very plugged in. The Tate Martell era may be starting in 2019.

Putting aside fandom biases, he should. He's probably the best pro-style QB who can leave this year and it's a weak QB class.

Shea, I'm not sure on. I feel like he'd do better with the weak QB class. I don't see him improving his stock drastically with an extra year, although I guess anything is possible.

Hate to say this, but he deserved the Heisman. Broke Denard's total offense records. Beat the best defense Michigan has had in twenty years. That guy should go get paid.

I honestly am surprised Gil Brandt is still alive. He's been predicting wrong stuff for decades, but that doesn't mean he's not right in this instance.

Gil Brandt for those of you who didn't read HTTV 2016, is one of the guys who started the Dallas Cowboys. He was also a close friend of Bo Schembechler and the guy who recommended and set up the meeting between Bo and Texas A&M. He agreed to be interviewed by me for my article on it.

He had one of the best, if not the best, passing seasons for a big ten quarterback. The likelihood that he significantly improves his numbers is pretty minimal so yea, why wouldn't he?

It’s taken me a long time to realize 99% (I just randomly picked a number - you can too!) of sports reporters or “insiders” are indeed just hacks fishing for clicks and/or attention. Best to tune the nonsense out until things are officially reported.

I think Haskins will definitely go pro. Also, I know OSU is at a reloading standpoint, but it is not going to be an easy transition for Ryan Day. They will be losing several key players on both sides of the ball, more than likely replacing their Def Co, and losing one of the best coaches that has coached college football. The B1G is as good as it has been for a while and the OSU fan base is about as spoiled a fan base that is out there. I am really anxious to see how he and the fan base react when he loses his first game. It is a different conference than when Urban walked into the horseshoe 7 years ago.

The OSU fanbase is probably second only to Alabama in "Entitlement Rankings."  Despite the fact that OSU just promoted a guy who has ZERO head coaching experience, they assume that things will just continue on at this stratospheric level.  They (mostly) aren't even worried about it.  And to be fair, why wouldn't they assume that?  I mean, they lost a very successful coach (Tressel) to scandal and ended up with an even BETTER coach.  (I wonder if they recognize how LUCKY they got with that and the fact that it doesn't usually end that way??)

Anyway, they are overdue for a coaching hire failure...

They’re praying Schiano and Bill Davis leave. Their D sucked this year. Some of it was youth in the back 7, some was scheme and it’s the second year in a row the LB play was below their expectations.  They hired Grinch from WSU and Buckeyes are hoping he gets the playcalling duties.

Its scary how much talent is on that roster. If they actually fix the D they’ll be a playoff caliber team. It cost them this year. 51 and 39 points to end the regular season kept them at #6.

I would go pro if I was him. The QB class w be so much more crowded next year and his stock is high, and teams that need a QB are not really bad teams so he will land in a great spot! Jax, NY, Denver, Wash, Car, TB, SD Mia, NE

There were reports weeks ago he was considering going pro.  With Urban gone, his performance in the game and Big Ten championship, along with being a Heisman finalist, he is as good as gone.

I've seen Martell a few times and he has a very good arm. But keep an eye on RS freshman (next year) Matthew Baldwin who has a big time arm and could challenge Martell. Wiltfong called him the most under rated recruit in last years class and he was shooting up the board fast at the end of last year's recruiting cycle. Neither compare to Haskins though. Kids like him come along once every ten years or so

Baldwin is really, really good. Comes out of Lake Travis in Texas, 8 of the last 10 state titles in the big school division. The last 4 QB’s before him went FBS (Baker Mayfield being the most notable) and the kid who replaced him is committed to Texas.

Baldwin only started one year but that’s how LT works. He was in their system since 6th grade.

Ryan Day recruited him, ran a very similar offense to what OSU does. He is a passer with some mobility.  Probably a better fit in Day’s system than Martell.

The really scary one is their 2020 commit. That kid has an NFL arm.

I live in Texas and also have followed Tate since he was in High School and thru the Elite 11 documentary.

First off Baldwin is a potential dream and soul crusher. The dude is seriously legit, CANNON for an arm and Lake Travis along with Southlake, Katy and Westlake (Austin) are POWERHOUSE FOOTBALL MACHINES. They routinely have TONS of kids going to legit D1 big time programs.

Second Tate, DO NOT assume Tate is a nobody. His reported 40 time is not even close to his full running speed (which is shifty and quick) and has the ability to shift his hips like no other white QB I've ever seen. He's 5'11" but the kid has a stronger than expected arm with seriously good accuracy.  Tate is not an afterthought. The biggest thing this kid has though is a large chip on his shoulder against everyone who says he is a nobody or won't be successful. Go watch the Elite 11 Doc he was in and Dilfer talks about him. He is SMART and has the "it" factor big time. The kid won 3 national championships in HS at QB. He knows how to get it done and win.

This is the year for him to go because it looks like the following year's crop of QB’s will be a lot  better than this year’s.

Go Haskins but please don’t talk your buddy Patterson into leaving.

Dear Don Brown,

Over the next 11+ months, please consider developing a strategy to keep Tate Martell from running right up the middle on a draw for 20+ yards on 3rd and long, since even a developmentally disabled cocker spaniel could tell you that OSU will try doing that. Thank you.

If Haskins was smart he would sit out the Rose Bowl. His draft stock is at an all time in a horrible QB draft class.

Why is he even considering coming back?!

jgoodman

There's a good chance he'll be the first QB off the board.  He'd be an absolute fool not to declare for the draft.

Not that it matters much for us.  Tate Martell will cut us up just the same.
