They say shit like 'championships matter' now, and then send Ohio State to the CFP over the Big Ten Champ. Setting aside the fact that Undefeated ND beat Michigan and held them to one offense TD, Undefeated ND is ratings gold.

Yeah, I agree with this premise. You should add to that wins against solid non-ranked Power 5 teams. Like TCU (Ohio), Virginia (Indiana), Pitt (Penn State)

I don't know about that. Notre Dame seems like a clear cut #3 at this point in the season. Think about this. Does anyone else have a better win than Notre Dame? The answer is "no." Bama beat LSU, but Michigan >>> LSU.

The last couple years' rankings have swung so much at the end, it's hard to get too worked up about preliminary results. LSU looks like a Sugar Bowl team. No matter what happens the rest of their season OU or WVU will jump them, as they play twice late in the season.

No, they probably won't. The schools were in a sense the victims of the fraud. And to punish them for actions taken against their interests does not seem right under these circumstances (with the exception of Arizona, I think).
The NCAA could build a case for lack of institutional control against Arizona for Sean Miller's role. That Arizona learned of the facts and did not fire him seems like ratification to me. This is many times more corrupt than the scandal that essentially killed Michigan basketball for 12 years.

If I could only pick one, yes, beat Ohio State and break the seal.
Also, Rose Bowl over the Playoff, as well as anywhere else Michigan could go. Rematch with the Wazzu or Washington.
The Cotton Bowl is not literally the last place I would want Michigan to play, but playing for JFK-hating middle-aged Texas oilmen in an industrial park in suburban Dallas-Fort Worth is a pale substitute for arroyo seco and the pageantry of the Rose Bowl.

Here's what I think. He's 4-2 against Michigan in years where the teams have met as equals. (Wins in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017; losses in 2007 and 2012.)
That's pretty good. Michigan has been at a near-historic low the last eleven years. But that record, even more than the overall head to head, tells me he is a good coach, period.
|10/11/2018 - 1:29pm||I don't agree with the…||
I don't agree with the notion that Chicago is the B1G's biggest market. The Big Ten has always had a big footprint in New York, even before Penn State joined the conference. Rutgers was never going to be a stand-alone objective. It just fits into an already established conference fan base. This gets proven every time there is something like the B1G basketball tournament in the City.
Look at this data. It's a bit old, but it shows Michigan has more alums in NYC than Chicago.
And that Rutgers brings 100,000 alums to the NYC market (which is less than half, BTW). I suspect that today the number of B1G alums in NYC is roughly the same as Chicago.
Anyway you look at it 200,000+ alums in the NYC area for the B1G is a big deal.

|10/03/2018 - 3:11pm||A nice retrospective, and…||
A nice retrospective, and you are right to credit Fitz for running a solid program despite the inherent disadvantages Northwestern has.
For me, what's missing here is the following context: stunning upsets and heartbreaking losses by Michigan to Northwestern in 1995, 1996, and 2000.
In 1995 Michigan was undefeated and ranked No. 7, and lost a bitter defensive struggle. Michigan turned it over 4 times, out gained Northwestern considerably, and were ahead at the beginning of the third quarter 13-9, losing 13-19. That game changed the course of the season. With a win, I bet Michigan's win against Ohio sends them to the Rose Bowl.
In 1996, Michigan lost at Northwestern in a game where Michigan led 16-0 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. They somehow lost 16-17. Again, Michigan was undefeated going into the game. It was a season-changing loss. Again.
So, in the 4th quarters in 1995 and 1996, Northwestern outscored Michigan 27-0.
In 2000, all Michigan had to do was run out the clock, and Anthony Thomas fumbled leading to the game-winning score. 46 second left on the clock. Second and three. Thomas had been mauling them. Northwestern had two timeouts left. Thomas breaks through the line, into the open field, and drops the ball. Had he not fumbled, he may have been gone. Had he just taken a knee after four easy yards, the game is over. First down and Michigan can just burn out the clock by taking three knees. That loss cost Michigan the Rose Bowl, without qualification. Two turnovers. The second one was totally unnecessary.
Taking a step back, those losses in 1995, 1996, and 2000 were far more costly than the wins since then have been valuable. By a factor of between 100 and 1000.
|09/28/2018 - 12:53pm||Based on aesthetic criteria,…||
Based on aesthetic criteria, and the campus alone, Indiana Bloomington should be the best. Most beautiful campus I have been on (I'd take it over Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Duke, UNC, Notre Dame, all of the Oxford colleges). Bloomington, although it has a lot to do, isn't as fun of a college town as Ann Arbor or Madison, but the limestone buildings and uniformity of the architecture are truly incredible.

If your description of the EL police is accurate, it's a change from the late 1990s, and that is good. AA police are reasonable (even if you throw snowballs at their car), and by and large treat students with respect. As I see it the subtext of the EL riots in the 1990s was bad policing.

Cops harassing college kids at parties is as old as college life itself. East Lansing police are especially nasty. Even if they are football players.
