Maybe how his departure affects Michigan, OSU, and the Big Ten going forward?  I don't think that was addressed this summer.

My rebuttal to that would be how many games did (playoff-bound) Oklahoma’s defense cost them that were instead saved by an amazing offense? Regardless of our high defensive standards, we should always be seeking to optimize all aspects of the team and unfortunately Pep ain’t it.

Meh I'd rather Michigan see zones early in the season to prepare for them than be hit with something later in the season with less time to make adjustments.

12/03/2018 - 5:20pm I hear ya and as a chronic…

I hear ya and as a chronic sufferer of BPONE, I'm with you.

In the worst case scenario, we have a South-Carolinian performance, this place melts down for a week, and it's going to be a loooong offseason and would kill my enthusiasm for next season.

All I'm saying is there is upside to this game.  IF the offense opens up and Shea is efficient pushing the ball downfield, I'd be counting down the hours to the Spring Game to see offseason progress and schematic changes (assuming Pep leaves oh lord pls).  IF the defense can shut down the crossing routes, I would regain some confidence because right now, it's baffling to me how it wasn't fixed after the Indiana game.

The OSU game was so demoralizing because many thought the tide of the rivalry was finally turning (or at least becoming competitive).  That was proven definitively incorrect which is where we sit now.  But a great bowl performance may convince me that it was just a really bad day for the coaches/team, and we'll get them in the Big House next year.

12/03/2018 - 5:02pm I'd say we were all more…

I'd say we were all more optimistic about the Harbaugh era at that point than 3 OSU losses later and last year's bowl disgrace.  Give me a glimpse of that age of innocence.

12/03/2018 - 4:30pm I understand the general…

I understand the general sentiment but disagree slightly.

First, a blowout can still be a statement win.  Total domination from start to finish shows resilience from a devastating loss and ends the year on a high point.  More importantly, it's a chance for the coaching staff to demonstrate that they learned lessons from the OSU game.  On D, you know Florida's going to try cross routes and short passes.  Can we stop it decisively?  On O, will the play calling be more aggressive and better utilize our weapons in the passing game?

I agree that this game could very well be a meh win.  But it's also an opportunity to spark optimism and change the narrative going into next year.

Remembering that Harbaugh had to take over a team coached by this guy and worse, an administration that would hire Hoke puts this rebuild and our position relative to OSU into perspective.

Brian was dead on calling it Football Armageddon II.  If we had won, we would have:

  1. Gone on to the BIG championship game and probably the playoffs.
  2. Likely ended Meyer's tenure at OSU.
  3. Locked up Zach Harrison

Sigh

11/30/2018 - 8:51am Not saying I'm not loving it…

Not saying I'm not loving it or that it's undeserved but I find this sort of stuff amusing being at the extreme other end of the spectrum in terms of hyperbolic overreaction to small sample sizes from the football team.  Shows you the strength of the "what have you done for me lately" mentality, with lately getting shorter (a week now?) all the time.

Chatter has been that it's Anthony Solomon, 4* composite LB but 3* to 247.  I wouldn't have called it "huge" as some hyped it up to be but I do respect the kid for pulling the trigger right after the OSU game.

EDIT: I don't think this commitment has been announced publicly yet btw.

Thanks as always for the info.  To clarify, are you saying if Michigan had a choice of any 3 guys, ZH might not make the cut?  Or are you saying ZH isn't one of the top 3 most likely to join the class?

I mean if losing one football game is more of a turn off than harboring a domestic abuser for a decade (not saying this is the case for ZH at all) then by all means go to Ohio State.

Please be Zach Harrison.  A big recruiting victory esp against OSU would stem a lot of the negativity.

11/26/2018 - 10:27am Very well put.  Game plan…

Very well put.  Game plan was by far the #1 culprit.  For all the people shouting "TALENT", we were among the most talented teams OSU's faced this season and among the least competitive.

I still believe in Coach Harbaugh and Brown as football minds and more importantly, as people to lead the team and program but this isn't the first time the team's come out with a less-than-stellar strategy.  I know this loss will burn in their minds until next year, and they'll have adjustments ready to stop a short passing game.  I just wish sometimes they could anticipate the issues (which was kind of obvious given our issues against Indiana's crossing routes and OSU's offense) instead of having to experience them first.

11/18/2018 - 12:18am Exactly - for everybody…

Exactly - for everybody criticizing the defense, it reminds me of a Bill Simmons story about Greg Popovich.  During some playoff series, a team pulled out something new in Game 1 and was blowing out the Spurs.  Instead of revealing his counterpunch that game in a likely lost cause, Popovich waited until the next game to make the adjustment and the Spurs went on to dominate the rest of the series.  Similarly if it looks like we're going to win this game in the 2nd half, why reveal to OSU our adjustments to stop a short passing game?

Amen.  I'm still holding out hope we replace him with Jedd after the season.  With Jedd we had a functional screen game.  We had those sweet offset draws that somehow converted third and longs.  We took advantage of off coverage with bubble screens.  The passing game just seemed more logical and coherent.

10/17/2018 - 12:53pm I think that in a vacuum,…

I think that in a vacuum, his hesitance throwing against zone and flightiness in clean pockets could be smoothed out with another year here and benefit his draft stock and long-term prospects.  But with the flatter rookie pay scale, it makes too much sense for NFL teams to take shots at QBs early.  That in combination with a weak crop at QB in draft (from early evaluations) would probably mean a departure would pay off for Shea.
