Harbaugh 3rd Highest Paid Coach

Submitted by FauxMo on October 3rd, 2018 at 6:00 PM

Behind Urban Meyer and Nick Saban, of course, but above a couple of NC winners (Dabo S. and Jimbo F.) and a couple others who took their team to the NC game (Kirby S. and Gus M.).

So, say whatever you want, but when combined with our highly paid assistants like Don Brown, at least we can't say the AD isn't trying!

It continues to baffle me why people care so much about his salary.  It effects basically nothing that impacts you as a fan.  There is a point of diminishing returns when trying to get a top coach to come to your program - there are very few of them and the demand is high.  If you want one, you're probably going to "overpay" to some extent, especially if your argument consists of cherry picked examples of coaches at other programs that are having their best year.  "We could save 3MM a year if we hired that guy!"  Actually, no you wouldn't, because that guy is getting a big pay raise at his next stop.

Personally, I feel like he has done a fine job so far. Would it be nice to get some Big Ten Championships or maybe even National Championships in the future? Obviously, but I always fall back to the idea that it could be much worse. I can understand the frustration from some fans, but I prefer this over the alternative of taking a risk on a new coach again to struggle for a while in hopes that we have a higher ceiling in the future. If last year is our floor with Harbaugh at the helm then I'm a happy camper.

I have been lurking this site since nearly its inception and I am not sure why, but this made me laugh. So I will just leave this possible meme here. I myself enjoy coach number 10.

ESPN -- Doing fine work as always!

of the top 10 coaches, only harbaugh has run a clean program.  he won't trade his integrity for a trophy, and we as a fan base would do well to remember that when the whining and complaining starts because he didn't win X game(s).

I get your point and agree.  But if you're talking results, the university could save a lot of money hiring a cheaper "clean" coach to not win big games too.

The only options are not Harbaugh, Hoke or Phil Fulmer.

I'm personally just fine with Harbaugh & think the future is bright, but I'm not married to him or any other coach til death do us part.

Yeesh. At least he doesn't cover up spousal abuse and child molestation, because he certainly hasn't earned it by winning big games

Caring about how much a coach gets paid is honestly so stupid. Just because Harbaugh gets paid a lot doesn't really matter. UofM has the money to pay him and that's fine. Getting paid a certain amount doesn't mean you need to be performing at a certain level to be living up to your contract. This isn't pro free agency

Money is one of the few advantages Michigan has over almost every other school.  Coaches and Assistants should be overpaid by default here.  Certainly that won't guarantee success, but it should never be a detriment.

10 wins in two of his first three seasons all without a legitimate quarterback and obviously some fluky things also happened, a drop punt  no calls at Ohio State or bad calls at Ohio State. he lost three games by a total of what Five Points? For the bowl game against FSU we lost  the number one tight end in Jake Butt  and didn't have Jabrill Peppers for the game  and lost by a point. I know injuries happen but you had a dinged up quarterback you lost your tight end and lost our number one defensive player most teams wouldn't overcome that. This does not make him a bad coach he's a good coach just stick it out

I don't give a shit what Michigan pays Harbaugh. It was market rate for a coach of his caliber who had the name recognition and ranking to name his own price. So, what the fuck are we arguing about? We wanted him here. We got him and you pay for that opportunity or you bitch about the consequences of not doing so.

Worth every penny.... Look at the years before he arrived.  I can see the program getting stronger and stronger.  I never fully realized how empty the cubbard was and it still has a way to go.  I do think 2018 is his best team.  Talent and skill at almost every position group.  Dline, CB, QB, WR, TE, LB, RB and special teams all very good.  Safety and Oline is a work in progress but I feel the corner has been turned in those areas as well.

He's worth every cent!  Think of it as an investment for the future of our football program. Harbaugh was the right hire at a big time of need for our stuck in the mud .500 football program, and in a few years we will be competing for B1G championships and national championships. I ignore the doubters!

Could have taken an NFL job for more money from San Fran, but he didn't.  I don't know why people persist with this thinking.  Possible? Of course.  He has his kids in his old school.  His parents live close by. His wife seems to like living in AA. AA is probably the one town that is closest to being his home town. He is a legend as a player at Michigan. He is becoming a legend as a coach. He played for a legend at Michigan. Lives in a great college town. Seems to like recruiting and all the say on personnel both on sidelines and field. Sure, you have to deal with some high school egos.  But that is much easier to deal with than NFL player ego's and ego's of many owners.

Short of a falling out with administration, I don't see Harbaugh leaving for NFL anytime soon. Perhaps after a championship or two and the program is on rock solid ground.

What annoys me is pundits trotting this shit out time and again (like finebaum today). Whether we like it or not, A LOT of people listen to idiots like him (or at least allow it to seep into their overall feelings about the program) and will begin screaming for Harbaugh’s head. It’s annoying bevause you know it’ll happen, however unwarranted.

The point is that people think “he’s paid the most so he has to win the most”. We’d like him to, yes, but he’s the best coach for us and consistent 9-10 win coaches who are clean don’t grow on trees. If you can legitimately show me a better option I could entertain the idea. Until then, STFU.

Imagine when you look at it per win over rival?  cause he is probably the highest paid ever, AMIRITE!

Jokes aside, I am surprised how many people are ok with this.  I mean, I love him as coach and wouldn't want anyone else, but... I'm not exactly beating the he is paid a fair amount drum.

He is a bargain at the price. Considering the trajectory we were on in terms of on field performance, depth of talent (lack of), and loss of fan interest. All of college football is fighting n attendance challenges for many reasons. Michigan is not immune to that and I firmly believe we were in danger of a precipitous drop. Jim immediately restored enthusiasm. Now he does have to win and we do need to compete for conference titles (soon) or we won't maintain the enthusiasm but I hate to think where we'd be without him.

Say we had hired Dan Mullen. Good coach, we'd have a good product. Would he have won 10 games his first year, which was so important in restoring faith? I don't know. Would he have recruited as well and done it cleanly?

I'll say this in defense of Harbaugh and last year's disappointing results: he had a newborn in the house, and anyone with kids knows that having a new baby inevitably impacts your job performance. You can argue "well this is college football, there are lots of people involved, he has the cash to hire help, etc.," but the fact is your career performance takes a hit because your priorities shift, you're operating on less sleep, you're spouse is more stressed, etc. It matters.
