I think it's safe to say the guy loves Michigan.  He had every opportunity to transfer out when he was buried on the depth chart for multiple seasons, but stayed and made the most of his chances once getting on the field.  It's easy to root for guys like that.

And if he has a solid season, it should improve his draft stock for next year.

To be honest, as a fan I don't feel like I have enough information to answer any of these questions.  Besides saying, "that position coach's group did well, so he must be a good coach," I have no clue who the right people to fill these holes are, or who among the current staff deserves to be promoted.  I have failed as an anonymous MGoBlog commenter.

Slightly worried that JJ seems different with Moore as HC.  Is Sherrone slapping the shoulder pads?

Trap game, on the road,…

Trap game, on the road, against our former OC with something to prove, and all the outside noise.  Not pretty, but great 1000th win.

I think the crowd may have…

I think the crowd may have been a factor in the run-heavy approach, too.  Would've been harder for the WRs to hear JJ.

They must feel comfortable…

They must feel comfortable with Lucas and Gilmore, I guess.  Or at least enough to not take a bad deal.

Drops seem to stick in…

Drops seem to stick in people's memories longer than catches.  If you have some drops early on in your career, it's hard to shed the perception of you having butter fingers.

While I trust the coaches,…

While I trust the coaches, one thing that does worry me is that with Sherrone Moore getting full OC duties it may take away from the time he gets to devote strictly to the o-line.  It didn't seem to matter last season when he was co-OC, but I guess we'll see how this season goes.

Maybe a bit too…

Maybe a bit too transportable and movable in this case.

I wonder how much money the…

I wonder how much money the ACC could offer versus the B1G.  Could the ACC make an offer and the B1G swoop in and offer more?

And for those who were meh on Stanford and Cal to the B1G before, does it pique your interest more to know that ND doesn't want it to happen?

People seem to think one of…

People seem to think one of the main thing to consider is how a school's football program is performing currently.  But teams like Cal and Stanford, while down now, have been good in the past, and there's no reason they couldn't be good again in the future.  Maybe part of the reason they suck is because they're languishing in a dying conference?  They could be reinvigorated by a change of scenery, so to speak, by joining the B1G.  They're a culture fit, in my opinion, as well.

It's usually mentioned that no one in the Bay Area cares about Cal and Stanford, partly because of all the transplants.  But how many of those transplants come from B1G country?  Joining the conference would give those people a reason to care about the local teams, and should juice the attendance at games and TV viewership right away.  Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Anyone know how live sports…

Anyone know how live sports work on Peacock?  I'm on the west coast, so I usually like to DVR noon games and start watching an hour or two after kickoff, skipping the commercials.  Is something like this possible, or do I have to watch live?

Running backs don't go high…

Running backs don't go high anymore but Edwards is the kind of hybrid threat that the league still likes one heckum.

Jamyr Gibbs is in this category.

I think this is a better way…

I think this is a better way to do it than trying to combine both types of coverage on one channel.  Personally, I'm more into the football stuff, and I've found myself gravitating to the NFL Network's coverage in recent years for that reason.  I don't really need to hear every guy's sob story (however inspiring) to get interested, but I guess if you're trying to make draft coverage tolerable for more casual fans it serves a purpose.

Here's another mind-blowing fact:  Harriet Tubman lived at the same time as both Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

Harriet Tubman (1822-1913)

Ronald Reagan (1911-2004)

New Star Wars content seems…

New Star Wars content seems to follow the pattern of the prequel trilogy, in which it has to endure a period of hazing, sometimes way over the top in vitriol, by the fandom until those who grew up with the newer content are old enough to enter the discourse.

The fact that I can never go back to a state of childlike wonder and watch the new stuff is disappointing for sure, but to turn that angst against the creators is misplaced, and frankly doesn't feel healthy.  Because there is nothing anyone could do to replace the memories I have of watching the original trilogy.

That being said, I think The Mandolorian suffers from Disney's need for original content for Disney+.  Its 30-45 minutes episodes with 8 in a season, so it has a quicker turnaround time, but I think that hurts the storytelling.  Could it be better? Yeah.  But if this registers on a list of things to be upset about, then I think your life is going pretty well.

I'm going to withhold any gloating until I see the result.  I don't think he's nearly as bad people make him out to be.

Just tell him that you think…

Just tell him that you think there's at least six guys better at recruiting than him.  Dude's a competitor.

Assuming that the info can be FOIA'd (not sure if it can in this case or not), it may be better for someone in the AD to put more details out there, or else the Freep will do it for them.

Right?  5 years used to be…

Right?  5 years used to be longest we could hope to keep guy (with 6th years rarely being granted), and we managed to find guys to fill spots when guys left.  Unless there is some issue with our CB development that I'm not aware of, I don't see the problem here.

I'm more intrigued with OSU…

I'm more intrigued with OSU's botched fake punt.  Did they take the penalty to sell the fake (because why would you intentionally push yourself back before a fake)? If so, since the penalty was on the long snapper, he must have known the fake was on, so why does he snap it to the punter?  Was it just a really bad snap or did he wrongly believe the fake was off?

And you may have not heard…

And you may have not heard this, but he's a converted wide receiver /s.

Last year was no fluke.  So we did it again on the road, with good weather, without our best player to prove it.

My hopes that the Rams suck are tempered slightly by the fact that Holmes helped build that team.

But currently the Rams pick is 7th while the Lions own pick is 11th, for those wondering.

First off, welcome back to UFR, Brian.

I noticed that Expected Points Added (EPA) weren't included in this one.  Is this going to be a strictly Seth thing going forward?  As a stats nerd, I'm just curious if the two of you have differing views on its importance, or if you just don't feel like adding it (which is okay, too)?

I would say it's in this…

I would say it's in this weird gray area.  Allowing NIL, but saying it can't be used to entice players to join your team, is like saying lap dances are now allowed, but you're not allowed to get turned on.  Or, to borrow your analogy, like allowing bricks in MMA, but not allowing you to concuss your opponent.

Michigan would be better off…

Michigan would be better off if pay-to-play was made totally legit.  This current scenario where some programs are, at least, going against the spirit of the rule on inticement makes it harder for other programs, like us, to enter the fray. It's not because we're too stupid to figure out that 18 year olds like money, but because we (the entire university community) may have more to lose by associating ourselves with rulebreaking behavior than a football factory that happens to have a school attached.

I feel like that won't…

I feel like that won't necessarily matter.  If it was actually about the player's being paid for their image, then yes, not seeing the field wouldn't be that great for promoting brands.  But NIL is just being used for boosters to funnel money to recruits based on their on-field potential.  And it's inevitable that some of those guys won't pan out, however you need them to join the team to discover this.

That's pretty much it. …

That's pretty much it.  Other programs seem to really be pushing the envelope and daring the NCAA to do something about it.  We aren't willing to get into "inticement" territory (offering a recruit $x to sign), which is still against the rules supposedly.

If it's true (let's assume…

If it's true (let's assume it is for the purposes of this comment) that we have silent commits who we are having wait until the BBQ to make it official, I wonder what people think of this strategy?  Will the excitement of having multiple guys commit at the BBQ outweigh the current feeling that we're "off to a slow start"?  Or would it have been better to have commits trickle in over time so that we'd be higher in the rankings at recruiting sites?

I honestly don't know which would have more impact on recruiting success overall, so I'm just throwing it out there to see what you guys think.

Ahh, thank you!

I will say, if one wanted to…

I will say, if one wanted to maximize the leverage they have, then the possibility of them leaving would need to seem credible.  I think that was achieved here, but it would also be the case if he was actually leaving.  Whichever way it goes, I've resigned myself to being a nervous wreck until we find out.

Michigan:  "You can't just…

Michigan:  "You can't just slap the Block M on anything you want!"

Also Michigan:

Oh, I know.  I was just…

Oh, I know.  I was just curious where the line would be if they did care (and it was enforceable), at least according to their own policy.  And we still have a compliance office, so someone cares.

I do think it is possible for people to be in favor of the new NIL rules (at least versus the previous status quo), but still not approve of teams breaking those rules, even though it benefits the players.  If it's going to be a free-for-all, reflect that in the rules, or else it punishes those who want to run a clean program.

From the NCAA website:

"NIL…

From the NCAA website:

"NIL opportunities may not
be used as a recruiting inducement or as a substitute for pay-for-play."

If A&M, or anyone else, is dangling NIL deals (with a dollar amount attached) in front of a recruit to gain their commitment, It seems that would cross into "inducement" territory, no?  That said, it doesn't seem any easier to enforce than when it was under the table.
