Gemon Green has declared for the NFL draft

We need to hit the portal asap for some help. We basically have Will Johnson as a proven corner.

I just don't think he is a pro.  But he also isn't the kind of guy who is going to get NIL love so I am not sure what there is to keep him here.

Jyaire Hill kind of has a Will Johnson frame and was offered by everybody.  Green may not think he can keep up with the new blood.

This is bad but it is not panic time.  We have a stud nickel and field corner.  We have enough bodies to plug a warm one on the other side and it won't be the end of the world.

If Jyaire Hill needs to play next season, then that's a bad sign. Will Johnson was much more polished coming out of high school, early enrolled, and it still took him most of the season to become starter

Yes.  This is clearly not a good development.  But I am trying to see the bright side of things.  Hill is not a token recruit, he is a very good player.  He may have to take some lumps against some meatballs and hopefully be serviceable in October.

What is the deal with Jalen Perry?  He has a great name for a cornerback, and I hate seeing great names go to waste.

Maybe he's not.

But the clock is ticking, too. Gemon has been in the program for a long time--5 years. I presume he has a degree, or at least has had enough time to acquire one.

The older guys get, the less likely it is that they'll catch on in the NFL. If Gemon plays another year at Michigan and is basically the same guy, his stock lowers. Now, that could have been said last year, too... but only moreso now.

I wish he had stayed. But for some players the draft is a rational option. You declare, you get drafted or you don't, you sign a free agent deal and give it a shot.

At some point you just want to move on.

Can't be upset or even shocked about this. Disappointed for the team next year, sure, but Gemon has given a lot to the program.

I haven't found a site giving him a draft grade. Looks like there's 30-40 corners drafted each year on average, so I'm betting practice squad. However, who knows. He could test well and someone could take him in the final round. I of course will be rooting for him to get drafted when the later rounds start coming.

We need a transfer CB yesterday. Even if Hill turns out to dominant, we need someone with more experience. Taking 1 corner in 2021 and 2 corners in 2020(both gone) has hurt us.

I think the upside is there but we’ll have have to hope the kids grow up fast. If Mikey can play outside we definitely have the bodies to fill his spot at Nickel (Zeke Berry, Kody Jones), and then it’s Jaden McBurrows, Myles Pollard, Jyaire Hill backing up on the outside. Would be nice to look for a transfer corner just for depth purposes alone, but corner (unlike other positions on D) is a spot where freshmen and sophomores can be passable despite limited experience.

I would think that CB2 would move to Sainristil and McBurrows would be our nickelback.  Lightly used Jalen Perry would be the only backup with modest experience.  Kody Jones redshirted but played fairly well in the few games that he played.

Hope that everyone stays healthy.  All fingers and toes twisted.

There were some random rumors circulating on twitter about a certain CB looking to possibly transfer to Michigan. I don’t believe them but it would make for an awesome young tandem.

Let’s be honest, He probably saw how they would roll Will off the field at perplexing times and would have Green and DJ out there. It was so maddening when Will was clearly the best CB and they’d have DJ and Green out there. The Purdue game comes to mind. Will shut down CJ while he was covering him but most of those catches were when Green was on him. Not sure our personnel decisions are always great on either side of the ball.

Get a grip dude. Let's be honest, anybody that watched the B1G championship game was perplexed at why Will wasn't out there while they were getting toasted by in the words of GJ, Chuck Sizzle (which was very annoying, btw). People on this blog ad nauseam have lamented why different WR's haven't been playing. So, just because we have been successful does not mean we couldn't be better. It took the CFP Semi's to get Roman majorly involved. I want us to win badly. I'm not a hater. I have an opinion just like you my friend.

Both can be true; they aren't mutually exclusive.

We have had a phenomenal 2-year run, no doubt.  But you also cannot sit here and honestly say we haven't made some bad personnel decisions and play calling decisions, either.

Perfect example...Our defensive play calling, and blitz packages were terrible in the game against TCU.  Several of our offensive play calls were downright awful.   That doesn't take away how great a season it was, does it?  See, both can be true.

Coaches are making an incredible number of decisions during a game/season. It is idiotic to judge them based on the ones that don't work because these things happen to every team.

If the Philly Special worked everyone would be saying how great of a call it was. I don't remember hearing much complaints about Mullings pass play against OSU or even Mullings short TD later that same game.

Gotta hit the portal.  CB depth and talent isn't proven now.  Coach Clink has to work some magic now and I trust he can.  He's got connections.

I'll never understand some of the advice that some of these kids are receiving.  I hope for the best for the young man but I don't think this is going to be a good move for him.
