Yuck.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
Those are five words that I was not expecting to hear this year.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:25 AM ^
This is very MGoBloggy of me - but I saw 8 words.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:30 AM ^
To continue the MGoBlogginess - I think the statement also needs to be qualified with, "in that order."

NFL Draft has Gemon Green
Y'all, we have a hostage situation.

THERE ARE EIGHT WORDS
January 11th, 2023 at 10:50 AM ^
I too, was not expecting to hear the words " has for the NFL draft"
Very surprising to hear those, to be sure
January 11th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
oh wtf. the draft? honestly, does he even project to get drafted? Is he a practice squad kinda guy until he learns more?
January 11th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
I just don't think he is a pro. But he also isn't the kind of guy who is going to get NIL love so I am not sure what there is to keep him here.
Jyaire Hill kind of has a Will Johnson frame and was offered by everybody. Green may not think he can keep up with the new blood.
This is bad but it is not panic time. We have a stud nickel and field corner. We have enough bodies to plug a warm one on the other side and it won't be the end of the world.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^

If Jyaire Hill needs to play next season, then that's a bad sign. Will Johnson was much more polished coming out of high school, early enrolled, and it still took him most of the season to become starter
January 11th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
Yes. This is clearly not a good development. But I am trying to see the bright side of things. Hill is not a token recruit, he is a very good player. He may have to take some lumps against some meatballs and hopefully be serviceable in October.
What is the deal with Jalen Perry? He has a great name for a cornerback, and I hate seeing great names go to waste.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:39 AM ^
If there's any name to watch on the current roster, I'd say Jaden McBurrows. Staff was very high on him prior to his injury. We'll see how he comes back playing post injury in spring camp
January 11th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
Thats fine. just when 1000 kids say " i declare for the draft", in many cases, just seems so unlikely. Never can tell how a guy will turn out, but sucks that he doesn't want to stay a year. Can't we work out some NIL deal for him related to twins, or Green, or something? Sesame Street???
Also, I think this...
January 12th, 2023 at 8:56 AM ^
What would keep him here would be his last chance at playing time in games, I would guess, since I can’t see him getting it in the NFL
January 11th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
Maybe he's not.
But the clock is ticking, too. Gemon has been in the program for a long time--5 years. I presume he has a degree, or at least has had enough time to acquire one.
The older guys get, the less likely it is that they'll catch on in the NFL. If Gemon plays another year at Michigan and is basically the same guy, his stock lowers. Now, that could have been said last year, too... but only moreso now.
I wish he had stayed. But for some players the draft is a rational option. You declare, you get drafted or you don't, you sign a free agent deal and give it a shot.
At some point you just want to move on.
Can't be upset or even shocked about this. Disappointed for the team next year, sure, but Gemon has given a lot to the program.
January 11th, 2023 at 2:11 PM ^
I haven't found a site giving him a draft grade. Looks like there's 30-40 corners drafted each year on average, so I'm betting practice squad. However, who knows. He could test well and someone could take him in the final round. I of course will be rooting for him to get drafted when the later rounds start coming.
We need a transfer CB yesterday. Even if Hill turns out to dominant, we need someone with more experience. Taking 1 corner in 2021 and 2 corners in 2020(both gone) has hurt us.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
CB depth next season is looking very thin right now.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
I think the upside is there but we’ll have have to hope the kids grow up fast. If Mikey can play outside we definitely have the bodies to fill his spot at Nickel (Zeke Berry, Kody Jones), and then it’s Jaden McBurrows, Myles Pollard, Jyaire Hill backing up on the outside. Would be nice to look for a transfer corner just for depth purposes alone, but corner (unlike other positions on D) is a spot where freshmen and sophomores can be passable despite limited experience.
January 11th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
It could always be worse:
January 11th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Hope it works out for him, but dang, was really hoping he'd return. Puts us in a tough spot now with CB2.
January 11th, 2023 at 11:00 AM ^
I would think that CB2 would move to Sainristil and McBurrows would be our nickelback. Lightly used Jalen Perry would be the only backup with modest experience. Kody Jones redshirted but played fairly well in the few games that he played.
Hope that everyone stays healthy. All fingers and toes twisted.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
There were some random rumors circulating on twitter about a certain CB looking to possibly transfer to Michigan. I don’t believe them but it would make for an awesome young tandem.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
Not gonna happen anymore. Lincoln convinced him that defense is a priority and retaining Grinch will do that. Hard to believe he was ever leaving socal anyways. Sucks but yea we need another good corner
January 11th, 2023 at 10:39 AM ^
I personally don’t see why Grinch gets so much hype. Has he ever really had a good defense? I think the year he was at OSU they were decent but Oklahoma? USC? Both have been terrible under him.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:54 AM ^
Let’s be honest, He probably saw how they would roll Will off the field at perplexing times and would have Green and DJ out there. It was so maddening when Will was clearly the best CB and they’d have DJ and Green out there. The Purdue game comes to mind. Will shut down CJ while he was covering him but most of those catches were when Green was on him. Not sure our personnel decisions are always great on either side of the ball.
January 11th, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
yeah our personnel decisions are terrible which is why we've made the playoff two years in a row despite being the ~15 range on the talent composite.
Jesus Christ our fanbase is insufferable.
January 11th, 2023 at 12:22 PM ^
Get a grip dude. Let's be honest, anybody that watched the B1G championship game was perplexed at why Will wasn't out there while they were getting toasted by in the words of GJ, Chuck Sizzle (which was very annoying, btw). People on this blog ad nauseam have lamented why different WR's haven't been playing. So, just because we have been successful does not mean we couldn't be better. It took the CFP Semi's to get Roman majorly involved. I want us to win badly. I'm not a hater. I have an opinion just like you my friend.
January 11th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
You like to say "lets be honest" huh?
January 11th, 2023 at 12:26 PM ^
Both can be true; they aren't mutually exclusive.
We have had a phenomenal 2-year run, no doubt. But you also cannot sit here and honestly say we haven't made some bad personnel decisions and play calling decisions, either.
Perfect example...Our defensive play calling, and blitz packages were terrible in the game against TCU. Several of our offensive play calls were downright awful. That doesn't take away how great a season it was, does it? See, both can be true.
January 11th, 2023 at 12:28 PM ^
My point exactly! Did anybody love the Philly Special at the 2? Did we love handing or trying to hand the ball to Mullings at the GL over giving it to Donovan or simply having a TE push JJ into the Endzone??
January 11th, 2023 at 5:15 PM ^
Coaches are making an incredible number of decisions during a game/season. It is idiotic to judge them based on the ones that don't work because these things happen to every team.
If the Philly Special worked everyone would be saying how great of a call it was. I don't remember hearing much complaints about Mullings pass play against OSU or even Mullings short TD later that same game.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:41 AM ^
Lincoln convinced him that defense is a priority and retaining Grinch will do that
Retaining the DC who oversaw the awful defense convinced him that defense is a priority? Lol
January 11th, 2023 at 10:43 AM ^
defense is a priority
retaining Grinch
choose one
January 11th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
sometimes people like stability. in fact, very often they'll accept mediocrity vs instability.
enter, James Franklin.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:25 AM ^
Is it Will Johnson’s boy DJ out of SoCal?
January 11th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
Does his name sound like jomani dackson??
January 11th, 2023 at 10:54 AM ^
It would have been a much better fit for his position and development if he had come to Michigan. He still can and it would really help out the 2023 team. While it's probably not going to happen, it would be awesome if it did.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Gotta hit the portal. CB depth and talent isn't proven now. Coach Clink has to work some magic now and I trust he can. He's got connections.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
Tough to work your magic until this Harbaugh stuff is handled. Portal closes on 1–18 until May, so need this to get done to help lock up some CB’s.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
Not great Bob. Don't blame the kid at all if he has a good NFL grade, but man that depth looks thin now.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:27 AM ^
I can't believe he is getting a high NFL grade.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
If he’s even getting a day 3 grade I don’t blame him for going. He would be entering his 6th year of college otherwise and he probably feels like it’s now or never for the NFL.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
I hear Will Johnson has a close friend who isn't happy with his playing time elsewhere....
January 11th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
Is Domani Jackson ready to move on from USC?
January 11th, 2023 at 10:24 AM ^
If he wants to play in the CFP he should.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:41 AM ^
Hey, USC has to beat Utah to get there. Michigan only had to face lowly PSU and OSU.
With Grinch back, he'd be smart to bolt.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
I'll never understand some of the advice that some of these kids are receiving. I hope for the best for the young man but I don't think this is going to be a good move for him.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
... he already has his degree. If he's not good enough to be a pro now, he won't be good enough next year. It makes sense for him to shoot his shot.
