META: Please read the FAQ, Search for your article before posting, and don't share insider info

Submitted by ImRightYouKnow on November 10th, 2022 at 9:11 AM

[Ed(Seth)- Co-sign. Also one of the rules is don't post insider info here. If there's something big that is paywalled (e.g. when Balas confirmed M's interest in Braelon Allen) please only share what they put out publicly, like the title of the thread or what they put on Twitter. If people want the paywalled information that Balas finds they should pay for an On3 subscription so On3 can continue to pay Balas to find that stuff]

Seems like there's been a lot of rule breaking on the forums lately, so figured this could be a good opportunity to guide some tips before you post.

1. Read the FAQ:

The board FAQ can be found under the "MGoBoard" drop down at the top of the page. It'll provide guidance to what's in and out of bounds for posts, and may prevent someone from asking if Enemy #1 is a good source, and getting neg-bombed to death.

2. Search for your topic/article before posting

The search box is right above your name in the top/right of the page, and it's probably always best practice to search if a story has been posted before you assume we haven't seen a 3 day old article that's already been downvoted multiple times previously. Especially if your article is "breaking" news.

Hope this helps someone to avoid getting downvoted like Blake avoids 2nd level defenders. Go Blue!

Usually it’s easier to just scan 2-3 pages of the board post titles to check for a post. It really takes about 45 seconds. I think some people are just champing at the bit to be the first to post every article.

The other half of it is that a lot of folks have this idea that they can just find stuff online wherever, ingest it without question, puke it up elsewhere, and expect others to clean up the mess.  There's (usually) no malice to it so I'd like to be more accommodating, but the problem is that the Internet is a giant petri dish of festering misinformation, so that attitude is unsustainable.  I don't want to be harsh but I've seen the damage that intellectual laziness inflicts on society, so my irritation with it extends beyond sports/MGoBlog.

The lesson isn't, "Don't make mistakes," it's, "Own your shit".  You post it, you own it.  You can't throw trash onto your neighbor's yard and expect a warm reception because you claim to not know better.  Same goes for information.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this "Meta", IRYN!

I don't know if anyone has ever told you this or not, but either way let me say it:  you're right you know.

I was a lurker on the board for about 3 years before finally getting the courage to post a comment. That time was valuable learning experience for what not to do on the board as I saw many users get neg bombed to oblivion and/or sent to some small country in South America.

I would highly recommend a self-imposed waiting period for many new users. I still do some stupid shit from time to time, but luckily I'm still around and kicking.

Yeah, while I'm loathe to believe a lot of the "insider" info that gets posted out there but you definitely shouldn't be sharing it here freely.  People should get paid for their efforts.

May I suggest another rule? If you can’t figure out how to properly format your OP, or are throwing randomly formatted crap in your OP in a mad dash to be first to post… just don’t post. Or ask for help.

If it’s meaningful information, it will get posted by somebody else (preferably somebody that can work the link button and write in legible sentences). If it’s a snowflake, there’s no rush and it’s better to figure out your stuff before posting a mess to the board.

Well, I was going to post a sexually explicit James Yoder hot take about Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell and then retweet it at our recruits, but in light of this admonition I shall tactfully decline.
