Ant Wright hearing Dante Moore to Oregon

On Spotify live Anthony Wright said he’s hearing Dante is going to Oregon. Apparently being offered between 3-4 million $ and family members are being arranged to have jobs for Nike.

Honestly, that’s not going to do much anymore. Just about every major program is going full NIL (I mean, ND apparently is!), and Sam Webb is saying it’s going to be tough for us to keep up with MSU recruiting.

Unless something changes, I’m guessing our recruiting class rankings will start to drop to the 30-40 range, of which there isn’t  enough development chops on this staff to overcome that.

Like I said, let’s just enjoy this coming year (and maybe the year after), because after that, it’s all downhill.

Aiden was a high ranked player from that class.  Bell was under-ranked because the focus was on basketball.  Haskins turned out to be DESCENT with the exception of last year's OSU game where he was lights-out, but no other player from that class had done much in impacting the team to the playoff run last year.

Vincent Gray and the Green brothers would not see much playing time for any other major football program, and in Vincent Gray's situation, his play on the field showed why.

Upshaw, Barrett, schoonmaker and Welschoff are all playing well, but they are backups who made little impact on last year's team compared to the starters.

Let's start with the good part:

DESCENT? That's a sign of ignorance or poor attention to detail. Neither does much for your Maizen-like posts.

I think Haskins was way more than decent last year. The NFL doesn't pick "decent" players.

You forgot the starting LT (Hayes) and the award-winning kicker (Moody).

Going back a year, you might've mentioned NFL picks Mayfield and McGrone.

Ok fair. You can remove the 2015 class from this discussion. With that, I think someone ran the predictive tool for our class and guessed that we’d land around 20 for the upcoming class.

I really do think that we are not being serious enough about this. Being above NIL is going to be a real killer to our program.  There is no amount of history or tradition we can offer that’s more valuable to the $$$ these kids can make these days.

I agree.  Schools like Louisville, Texas Tech and MSU have a strong possibility of having better recruiting classes than Michigan.  The elite football programs will, and if you sprinkle about 10-15 secondary programs in there then I can see Michigan being 30-40 in rankings.

Lower football programs are adjusting to NIL quickly, and in a couple years if Michigan continues on their current adjustment path to NIL then many of the Virginias and Northwesterns of college football will pass them up.

People have to get rid of the Hoke notion that "This is Michigan" and players will crawl to play football for Michigan because of the name and history.  We are in the 21st Century, and survival of the fittest for a college football program is to play the NIL game better than the rest until the NCAA modifies it.  We all know how incapable the NCAA is, though.

I don’t know about this. The counterpoint is we are in NIL infancy stage here and there are going to be a large number of flame outs (irregardless of calamaties of 18 year olds being paid millions of dollars). I can’t believe the money being paid today will be considered well spent and patterns will change. Though I wish Michigan were more active given the free agency feel or everything getting kids who want to be here seems like a better continuity proposition rather than all mercenaries.

nike is a bit of a different animal as it’s in the sports sponsorship business for its brand so hard to compensate there.

Up through the 2022 recruiting class there has never been a composite 5* QB from the state of Michigan (Henson retroactively is considered the last one). Somehow there are two in back to back recruiting classes and the flagship university isn’t able to land either.

The state of Michigan is not a hotbed of blue chip recruits. When one comes around, we have to land them.

I might be in the minority but I don't see either Dante Moore and CJ Carr as 5 star QBs.

And that's not jealousy talking.

Some months back, I wrote about seeing Moore at the Michigan HS State Championship Game and he didn't stand out to me the way a 5 star QB should. It was a mixed performance.

They're good QBs. But 5 stars? Nah. When I think of 5 star QBs, I think of players like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields or Bryce Young.

Based on what I've seen, Dante Moore and CJ Carr are not on that level. But I'm keeping an open mind and I will monitor them to see if they take another step this season.

I’m a little biased perhaps because I coached vs Moore in the playoffs in 2020. As a sophomore he pulled an RPO slant for a TD that was smoother than most college QBs can. The speed he was able to read, pull, and throw a laser in stride was “tip-your-cap” worthy.

I will admit that I haven’t really watched a ton of CJ’s tape
