Death by a thousand papercuts on this one. Same news, over and over, with just a little more detail every time.
Yep, we're set A QB for a bit but this seems like its becoming a trend.
Oh well....is what it is. This university was never gonna go full NIL. It's all up to development from coaching staff.
Leaders and best have, for NIL, become the followers and worst.
The Michigan Indifference!
East German Judge: Who or what do you blame for "The Michigan Indifference"?
Yes.
Honestly, that’s not going to do much anymore. Just about every major program is going full NIL (I mean, ND apparently is!), and Sam Webb is saying it’s going to be tough for us to keep up with MSU recruiting.
Unless something changes, I’m guessing our recruiting class rankings will start to drop to the 30-40 range, of which there isn’t enough development chops on this staff to overcome that.
Like I said, let’s just enjoy this coming year (and maybe the year after), because after that, it’s all downhill.
Are you willing to eat a lemon on that 30 to 40 prediction?
Why just one lemon? Why not 30 to 40 of them?
That seems a lot.
Why not somewhere between 27 and 42 of them?
No because I do believe that the AD will eventually get straightened out on this topic.
We’ve had a couple of classes in the mid/low 20s under Harbaugh, so it’s not totally out of the question to see something closer to 30 if we maintain that we are above NIL.
Interestingly, the 2018 class (which ranked #22 nationally) and included Aiden Hutchinson and Ronnie Bell might just be the most impactful of recruiting classes under Harbaugh to date.
Weird how things work out.
Aiden was a high ranked player from that class. Bell was under-ranked because the focus was on basketball. Haskins turned out to be DESCENT with the exception of last year's OSU game where he was lights-out, but no other player from that class had done much in impacting the team to the playoff run last year.
Vincent Gray and the Green brothers would not see much playing time for any other major football program, and in Vincent Gray's situation, his play on the field showed why.
Upshaw, Barrett, schoonmaker and Welschoff are all playing well, but they are backups who made little impact on last year's team compared to the starters.
Let's start with the good part:
DESCENT? That's a sign of ignorance or poor attention to detail. Neither does much for your Maizen-like posts.
I think Haskins was way more than decent last year. The NFL doesn't pick "decent" players.
You forgot the starting LT (Hayes) and the award-winning kicker (Moody).
Going back a year, you might've mentioned NFL picks Mayfield and McGrone.
it’s just too bad we couldn’t get more than “descent” production out of haskins. i mean, just think how good we would’ve been with a first-team all-american in that spot, instead of a weak-asked second-teamer. and only first-team all-B1G? do better.
People always talk about how Haskins was a "running downhill" kind of RB, so we did in fact get "descent" production out of him!
Outside of his 2015 class, which he only had a few weeks to assemble, Harbaugh has had one class ranked 22nd. All the rest were within the top 20. Might want to check your facts before any further whining in the future.
Ok fair. You can remove the 2015 class from this discussion. With that, I think someone ran the predictive tool for our class and guessed that we’d land around 20 for the upcoming class.
I really do think that we are not being serious enough about this. Being above NIL is going to be a real killer to our program. There is no amount of history or tradition we can offer that’s more valuable to the $$$ these kids can make these days.
So you're just an internet tough guy who's complaining with no consequences..
Ok..
I agree. Schools like Louisville, Texas Tech and MSU have a strong possibility of having better recruiting classes than Michigan. The elite football programs will, and if you sprinkle about 10-15 secondary programs in there then I can see Michigan being 30-40 in rankings.
Lower football programs are adjusting to NIL quickly, and in a couple years if Michigan continues on their current adjustment path to NIL then many of the Virginias and Northwesterns of college football will pass them up.
People have to get rid of the Hoke notion that "This is Michigan" and players will crawl to play football for Michigan because of the name and history. We are in the 21st Century, and survival of the fittest for a college football program is to play the NIL game better than the rest until the NCAA modifies it. We all know how incapable the NCAA is, though.
I don’t know about this. The counterpoint is we are in NIL infancy stage here and there are going to be a large number of flame outs (irregardless of calamaties of 18 year olds being paid millions of dollars). I can’t believe the money being paid today will be considered well spent and patterns will change. Though I wish Michigan were more active given the free agency feel or everything getting kids who want to be here seems like a better continuity proposition rather than all mercenaries.
nike is a bit of a different animal as it’s in the sports sponsorship business for its brand so hard to compensate there.
Michigan: The Harvard of the Midwest.
And perhaps this is why Harbaugh was trying to get any possible NFL job....
NIL is going to ruin these kids.
Well this conjecture makes it sound like Nike is footing this bill, not the school.
Does Michigan have no boosters or corporate entities similarly invested in seeing the team secure such talent?
I thought he just wanted to “go away” to college?
That was Carr
When you choose not to complete with the big boys, you are going to miss out on most of the big time players 🤷🤷
....but, but, but our NIL program is Transformational!!! Yeah!
/s
Consider the source.
Sam webb has been saying this for a week. But now we need ant Wright?
How about we ask Skene about the ol?
Maybe Devin Gardner about how McNamara is doing?
Huh?
Perhaps this is selective memory talking but Ant Wright has a good track record on information (especially when it comes to basketball).
And what exactly does basketball have to do with football? Other than both sports using a ball?
Emoni to Michigan is a DONE DEAL. 100%. Absolutely happening. Buckle up. It's going down. Also Brandon Wade is winning the Wooden Award.
Yes the Brandon Wade one was the best! So ridiculous and such a sucking up to Wade’s dad.
Up through the 2022 recruiting class there has never been a composite 5* QB from the state of Michigan (Henson retroactively is considered the last one). Somehow there are two in back to back recruiting classes and the flagship university isn’t able to land either.
The state of Michigan is not a hotbed of blue chip recruits. When one comes around, we have to land them.
I might be in the minority but I don't see either Dante Moore and CJ Carr as 5 star QBs.
And that's not jealousy talking.
Some months back, I wrote about seeing Moore at the Michigan HS State Championship Game and he didn't stand out to me the way a 5 star QB should. It was a mixed performance.
They're good QBs. But 5 stars? Nah. When I think of 5 star QBs, I think of players like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields or Bryce Young.
Based on what I've seen, Dante Moore and CJ Carr are not on that level. But I'm keeping an open mind and I will monitor them to see if they take another step this season.
I’m a little biased perhaps because I coached vs Moore in the playoffs in 2020. As a sophomore he pulled an RPO slant for a TD that was smoother than most college QBs can. The speed he was able to read, pull, and throw a laser in stride was “tip-your-cap” worthy.
I will admit that I haven’t really watched a ton of CJ’s tape
Thanks for this. +1.
I've watched Dante Moore's highlights tapes as well to get a better feel for him. IIRC, Dante does have a Tua-esque ability to throw beautiful effective slant passes on RPOs.
On his highlight tapes, he shows an ability to throw some whistlers.
Given a choice between the two, I always wanted Moore over Carr.
At the end of the day, if we land Jadyn Davis, then this is all moot.
After we lose Carr, Moore, and Davis who is the next player that will make this all moot? Figure we better get our plan D in place.
I feel better knowing you will be monitoring them
Typical Michigan recruiting misses rationalization!!!
I guess it beats crying.
Ant Wright is a douche.
Now if I’m Dante I am absolutely taking the 3~4 million.
The things I did in college for a few grand…
Couple grand?
A couple 20 dollar bills gave me the night of my life at Skeeps and Ricks
Your beef with Ant is your business but he ain't wrong here. Most recruiting service are saying the same thing.
His list has dwindled down to NIL schools including A&M and ND. Michigan barely gets a mention.
I guess he wants a transactional experience.
A large enough transactional experience is also transformative, for better or worse.
