The White Sox in that era…

The White Sox in that era had a bunch of funny promos. I believe they put a 'little person' into the batting line up and the opposing pitcher was unable to hit the tiny strike zone.

Good point about bad…

Good point about bad outcomes. Maybe then the reward for fans is a bit like sports gambling? Like my $$ to the NIL a year ago was a drop in the bucket, but I "played a role" in the 2023 FB title?

Gave $25. If the Big House…

Gave $25. If the Big House crowd all gave the same = $2.5 million. Also, while more of a CFB fan, seems even a modest increase in NIL to get just 1 or 2 more guys than otherwise would make a big impact.

I understand why people wouldn't want to give $$ to players already getting paid, instead of using it for their own families. But I see $25 as well worth it if it makes watching the basketball season and March Madness more enjoyable. Seems better use of $25 than going to the movie theatre.

Team performances are so…

Team performances are so mercurial in the modern era, I was trying remember if those time periods were good or bad L'ville / TX / USF...

Good point; but even though…

Good point; but even though OSU CB sometimes aren't developed to their ceiling, CB is unfortunately one position where raw athletic ability can do a lot, team spirit or no.

I wonder if even some…

I wonder if even some revenue sharing with players (e.g., $100K / player, ~$8MM of $80+MM TV payout per team) would convince guys like him to stay another year. I would love to also see UM develop a really useful educational track for people who already graduated and are taking 5th years  (e.g., teaching certificate etc that would make them good candidates to go straight into high school teaching + coaching if pros don't work out etc.).

Yeah I'm concerned that OSU…

Yeah I'm concerned that OSU's new AD (from aTm), whose calling card is aggressive NIL, may give them a big leg up in CFB and MBB (although maybe worsen their olympic sports).

Yes, agree. And many fans…

Yes, agree. And many fans that are "turned off" by the "transactional" nature of recruiting now are in fact more turned off more by having to argue about it rather than the concept itself (as could be executed by UM).  If enough $ is on the table for all the major programs at a level that "money does not matter [to many players]", I think these fans would be fine with that set up.

Thanks for putting this…

Thanks for putting this together. We can have the silver lining that coaching hires etc is another 'game' to follow and 'enjoy'.

Sorry 'Excessive' use of quotes for sure.

First sports talk video i've…

First sports talk video i've watched ever--def worth it! Hilarious and shows how much OL (and other players) loved playing for him.

Mizzou is my 2ndary team too. It was a good year all around!

Just looked at 11W. I'm…

Just looked at 11W. I'm genuinely puzzled that 99% of the posters are claiming that this season has an asterisk for Michigan. Yes, there's a selection bias for insanity, but I figured at least a reasonable number of people would be fans of the sport, appreciate what the team did, and be a bit more even handed. I guess asking too much.

Pretty incredible that they…

Pretty incredible that they've raised $600K+ from just 3,900 donors. Seems we could easily super-charge NIL if everyone who went to a UM game gave just an extra $20. I totally respect why people don't give (and, you know, spend it on their actual kids or family!). But on the flip side, using the 'golden rule' (or Kant's categorial imperative), if I enjoy the product of everyone giving, I felt that I should give (a bit) myself.

I'm rationalizing giving to…

I'm rationalizing giving to this by thinking of the money that I've saved by not going to the CFP games (where a lot of the $$ would have gone to scalpers).

thanks for the tip, these N/A Negroni etc look great.

Fantastic photos and experience. So jealous. That bear looks embarrassed you caught him.

Thank you for sharing this. It's nicknamed 'the forgotten war' for a reason. Many Americans have forgotten that the difference between 50 million people living free in (South) Korea (and millions more around the world like myself) was "inches" in the Busan perimeter.

Mentally preparing myself…

Mentally preparing myself for a few plays where Colson overpursues and misses Milroe in the backfield.

#1.5 (gift for us as UM FB…

#1.5 (gift for us as UM FB fans): The gift of staying at our current level of expectations, which maxes our happiness (= reality / expectations).

We know that UM can compete for conf and national championships in this NIL era. But we also know that it takes an experienced OL free of injuries, experienced QB, special DC etc., which we won't have every single year.

yeah all these people like…

yeah all these people like me who have only seen the St John's and this Iowa game are like "this is such a fun team!"

Maybe we also have to adapt…

Maybe we also have to adapt as fans. Like adopt a secondary team in the MAC and get to know their roster over time (sure they will lose people occasionally to P4 but prob not that many) and get excited about their race to the conf championship. As "the race to be the 4th best team in the SEC and squeak into the playoffs" isn't that compelling.

I saw that Neb-Mizzou game…

I saw that Neb-Mizzou game in a bar in St. Louis. Empty except one other person who was distraught after the loss. I had no interest in Mizzou, so I gave it a passing "too bad for that guy, oh well".  I had no idea we'd still be talking about that play 25 years later!

I think some of us bear…

I think some of us bear scars from the end of the Carr era (Oregon) where mobile QB seemed to baffle the staff.

Yeah you are right, the…

Yeah you are right, the Covid year is waived as far as counting as a season of competition but he still only gets 4 seasons of competition total (within 6 rather than the usual 5 year span)

Your comment led me to…

Your comment led me to google--his mom was Peggy Evans (before name change to Carr) at DCDS. A big basketball star too (Michigan's Miss Basketball). I was still in junior high but 30 years later I distinctly remember seeing her practicing the 200M one day b/c she was so clearly on a different level.

OP— I enjoyed the re-run and the Extra effort you put into the additional links.

yeah, i had his last words…

yeah, his last words before the broadcast cut out for some reason were "my god, it's full of 5 stars"

Kick-6 notwithstanding, he's…

Kick-6 notwithstanding, he's made some great in-game calls. I think I remember that he called for an onside kick at the mid-point of a close National Title game with Clemson that turned the game? (Back when it seemed like Clemson would be a dynasty haha)

McCord seemed a pretty level…

McCord seemed a pretty level headed player, so this is a really bad sign for Day’s skills at roster management/ culture unless they sign a can’t miss transfer—Gabriel?—as part of a coherent long term plan (eg shift to mobile qb)

Yes and even All and the non…

Yes and even All and the non impact transfers were disagreements in part about medical advice, which is fortunately totally independent of the coaches.

The best use of this quote…

The best use of this quote since I saw a 10 year kid use it in reference to their chess tournament (must have been raised on the classics by their parents).

I think I remember the crowd…

I think I remember the crowd at the Game (also 2003? the 100th edition) chanting "Perry! Perry!" after he was slow to get up in the endzone. I reminded me of the movie 'the Gladiator' (in a good way if that makes sense)

I can see both sides of…

I can see both sides of going for the FG or not at the end of the 1st half. If going for the FG, the indefensible decision  was not running one more play to try to get closer.

Yes very fortunate that…

Yes very fortunate that Moore was in the right place and wasn't at the Jug or doing some shopping at Costco while it was quiet.

Indiana's schedule:

2024…

Indiana's schedule:

2024 Home: Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue, Washington
2024 Away: Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, UCLA

2025 Home: Illinois, Michigan State, UCLA, Wisconsin
2025 Away: Iowa, Maryland, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue

2026 Home: Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, USC
2026 Away: Michigan, Nebraska, Rutgers, Washington

2027 Home: Iowa, Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers
2027 Away: Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue, USC

2026 and 2027 with 3-4 likely to guaranteed losses. A Ceiling of 8-4 or 9-3 in your 3rd and 4th year as head coach is a recipe for getting fired.

4 years of being paid as a BIG10 HC would be worth it alone for a lot of people, but probably not OC or DC at top 5 programs like Moore.

total tangent--getting a…

total tangent--getting a couple of those whisky tasting is def worth it. Mainly because it concentrates the 'nose' (smell). (And discourages other people from dumping a bunch of ice or coke into this special pour you served them haha)

While I understand why…

While I understand why people are upset in this thread, it seems likely that W&C (law firm) gave a dispassionate appraisal of their injunction chances and whether BIG was bluffing about post-season head coaching suspensions. That led to a recommendation to settle. Lawyers aren't just hired to 'win' but also keep ourselves from harming ourselves.

Tangent about dispassionate versus "feels": the striking thing about the "all run" shift in game plan in PSU was not the choice to run, but rather the dispassionate, almost robotic, vulcan-like commitment to this logical choice, even after going 25 of 26 plays in a row. I wonder if Moore felt committed to  this extremely logical approach b/c "that was the plan discussed with Jim".

It might have been tempting, if Jim were on the sideline, to ask Jim "man, we've been running a ridiculous amount, should we try a pass or two?". And who knows what Jim's reaction would be?

I think some of Frames Janklin's problem is that he careens from "follow the numbers" to "feels".

It's a fool's errand to be…

It's a fool's errand to be optimistic about the NCAA; but maybe this gives the NCAA an out in 2024. "the teams most affected, i.e., BIG, agreed to a 3 game suspension as adequate punishment" so we'll go with close to time served.

Well, one can hope!

Plus get him back for BIG…

Plus get him back for BIG championship and CFP; seems Michigan thought they weren't going to get an injunction?

Can any MGoLawyers weigh in…

Can any MGoLawyers weigh in on whether Michigan would win an antitrust case? It seems (to a total non-lawyer) that antitrust involving another party (student/employees) is quite different than org members self-regulating...but I have no idea.

If Michigan does stand a reasonable chance in a court case, it seems an important prod to the NCAA to limit this and avoid yet another court case limiting NCAA powers?

I agree we've lost 'the…

I agree we've lost 'the court of public opinion', but fortunately that doesn't matter until people stop watching the games (and people are going to watch...). The average tv audience (i.e., not people on message boards) are going to forget about this in a year.

Esp going to a 12 team playoff where subtle #4 v #5 decisions don't matter.

My (obvious) take: More than…

My (obvious) take: More than any other school (not named Georgia or Alabama), Michigan can go far with a very good but not great QB. Guaranteeing a 'floor' for the QB position every year leads to conference championships (while Penn State, unless their OL improves, essentially needs a JJ to contend in the BIG).

Hopefully Santa, regents,…

Hopefully Santa, regents, Warde etc take the 25 year forward view and not fight last decade's battles about conference re-alignment (i.e., forming a 8 team super conference without 'dead weight schools' would almost certainly be more profitable than a BIG10 or SEC)

Someone less lazy than me…

Someone less lazy than me please make a gif of the "Harbaugh pantomiming the Corum 'hold' to the ref" episode. Harbaugh really put some of his Stanislavski method acting chops into his facial expression.

Nice example Romulan. It's…

Nice example Romulan. It's incredible that this has gotten to the university president level in a public way. That alone is a massive failure on Petitti's part. His job is to be the public "bad guy" for what the universities want behind the scenes, like Goodell and NFL owners.

I'm curious what Santa's…

I'm curious what Santa's personal relationship is with the other Big10 university presidents. They all have much more in common than differences, including 99% common interests (e.g., advocating for govt research and medical center funding, visa policies etc.).

25 years ago, yes it would…

25 years ago, yes it would be absurd to entertain talk of leaving the Big10. But it's a different world. Before the current B10 grant of media rights ends in 2030, I think it would simply be responsible leadership to explore at least via back channels what an ACC, B12 or SEC deal could look like.
