OT: Greatest 80s Hair Metal Song
The calm before the non-OT storm.
Today I decided to listen the Hair Metal Essentials on Apple Music. And man! It brings me back to some hard, but good times in my life. My favorites:
- Something to Believe In - Poison (this song is by far their best and doesn't get its just do)
- Mama, I'm Coming Home - Ozzy
- Patience - GnR (personally, I think this is their best song)
- Love Bites - Def Leppard (this was their only #1 hit, not Pour Some Sugar on Me)
- When It's Love - Van Halen (their only power ballad really)
- Heading for a Heartbreak - Winger (Reb Beach is a VERY under-rated guitarist)
What say you MgoBlog?
Motley crue - Kickstart my heart
Scorpions - wind of change
"Winds of Change" is fantastic! I tried to learn to whistle from GnRs "Patience", but "Winds of Change" is equally prolific.
Follow the Moksva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the winds…of chaaaange
We obviously have similar musical tastes. I would add Home Sweet Home by the Crue as well
Just needed to make sure Scorpions were on here!
Don't disagree with including the Scorpions, but both No One Like You and Rock You Like a Hurricane are better songs than Winds of Change (though it may just be that I am slightly older).
Hair Metal is ostly not my kind of thing, but nostalgia is a power drug.
I would add
Ratt--Round and Round
Poison--Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Skid Row--18 and Life

Scorpions “The Zoo” is their best song, IMHO
I can’t help but think of the opening to Dr. Feelgood whenever I think of hair bands.
on a different note, is it strange that the older I get the more I like 80s hair band music?
My kids are now adults and in some instances it feels like I’m emerging from a 20 year hibernation. Serious question, when did rock music die? I ask because I find myself still listening to the 90s music and you are asking about the 80s, it’s a bummer there isn’t anything new to discuss.
rant over, get off my lawn
get off my lawn
I literally did a "get off my lawn" today. I was polite though.
I live on a small lake and have had stuff stolen down by the lake, I also have a "private property no trespassing sign."
So, I look out the window and notice someone was hiding behind the trees. I walk out there and they are eating lunch on my property and their bike was purposefully hidden out of my view. I told the person it was private property, that I have had stuff stolen, pointed out the sign that they had to have seen, and asked them to leave.
The person acted indignant as if I was in the wrong and purposefully took about 15 minutes to leave.
I probably wouldn't care if I didn't get stuff stolen of mine on the lake.
Rock music isn’t dead! There are some fantastic rock bands out there now who still release amazing new music!
Obviously Radiohead is the big name and Ok Computer (2017) is arguably one of the best rock albums ever.
Everything Everything is a really good band who just released an album this year called Raw Data Feel which features some hilarious A.I.-generated lyrics.
The Smile is an off-shoot band with two Radiohead members that just released a debut album a few months ago.
A really awesome Indie band out there is Illiterate Light. They haven’t released new music in a little while, but their debut album was really great.
And there’s still so much more out there!
One of the last things I did before moving to California was see Radiohead at LCA in 2018. Seeing them perform live had been on my bucket list for a couple decades until then. They have been at or near the top of my playlist for a long time. But, they are absolutely a 90s band. I was directing my ire at the lack of new bands/songs. I am going to check out your other suggestions as I am intrigued, thank you, any fan of Radiohead is ok in my book.
2017?
Must've been a remaster!
Give it take 20 years
Rock music is dead.
If a band like Rival Sons can't make it, rock is dead.
Do you remember back in the 90s when there were 3-4 good releases a WEEK?
There are always some decent indie bands out there - but its light years from what it used to be.
But you're (not just you literally, but this notion has been around for decades...hell, maybe centuries) also light years from when you thought RAWK was at its peak.
Mainstream rock might be dead (outside of a few older acts that are still active and relatively successful), but metal is alive and well and in my humble opinion, better than it's ever been.
After 2013 Rock became more growly without the great guitar solos of years past. 10 to 20 years ago Octane use to be my favorite sat radio station. Now I find myself flipping through boneyard, classic vinyl classic rewind, and lithium.
Rock music never dies, it just isn't in the limelight like its been at various times in history. When Metallica is the 6th biggest concert draw (based on ticket sales) of the last 40 years, rest assured rock isn't dead. I tried to get the entire results but for some reason the website said it needs access to my photos to look at their chart. The article says Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Guns 'n' Roses, Pearl Jam, Motley Crue, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Foo Fighters all made the top 100.
If you're into documentaries, there's a collection of them on Amazon Prime video called the Coda Collection. Its a subscription but there's one called Long Live Rock that follows the bands and fans at Rock on the Range 2015 in Columbus. It was actually gonna be called Rock is Dead and they changed it (you find this out in the end credits).
Metallica has to be one of the most globally liked bands of all time.
I saw Metallica and Guns and Roses in Giants Stadium in 1992. One of those shows you wish you could go back in time and go to again. Not sure how I made it back alive from that show as an out of control 18 year old driving from Philly with a bunch of friends.

Nice. Saw that tour at the Pontiac Silverdome.
I'm jealous of both of you
Same. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Easily Top 3. I was functionally deaf for 2-3 days after -- we were in the first 15 rows of the lower bowl, on the left side (facing the stage, not stage left), in close proximity to a giant bank of speakers.
What a great time.
Same. Amazing show, despite Axl being a baby. Metallica blew the top off The Dome.
When I’m with you - Sherriff
Carrie - Europe
High Enough - Damn Yankees
Hard to choose a singular favorite or greatest but like you, my favorites:
- Nighttrain - Guns N' Roses
- Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue
- Ain't Talking' 'Bout Love - Van Halen
- Fallen Angel - Poison
- 18 and Life - Skid Row
I just love "Give me Something to Believe In" by Poison that I cannot respect anything else by them.
Autograph - Turn Up the Radio
Poison has to be Every Rose Has It’s Thorn, right? That’s the one Poison song I like. For comedic purposes, I do like Unskinny Bop.
You don’t like “Give me Something to Believe In”?
If you want comedic hair metal, listen to Steel Panther. Death to All But Metal is a good one, as well as Community Property.
Bon Jovi. Living on a prayer.
This post inspired me to listen to You Give Love a Bad Name.

Both songs are great
Motley Crue- Looks That Kill
Def Leppard- Hysteria (entire album)
Twisted Sister- We're Not Gonna Take It
Quiet Riot- Metal Health
Great White- Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Tesla- Love Song

Here's the much superior version of "Once Bitten Twice Shy", the original as performed live by the man who wrote the song, Ian Hunter (along with guitar god Mick Ronson).
(signed) The biggest Mott The Hoople fan on the entire MGoBoard
-----------------
PS: Great White did a credible version of the song, and yes, they probably sold more copies, but compared to Ian and Mick they're mere mortals.
PS (part 2): And here's Ian Hunter's studio version, off his first solo album:
Tesla - Gettin' Better
Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It
Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil

I have not thought about Youth Gone Wild in over a decade, but can still remember most of the lyrics. However, if my wife doesn't text me specifically what she needs from the store I will forget.
Quiet Riot - Cum on Feel the noize
Cinderella - don’t know what you got
- nobody’s fool
Side note: Tom Kiefer’s Mom was my 3rd grade teacher
Was looking for Nobody's Fool. First song that came to mind. I would also add Close My Eyes Forever and even though it may not be hair metal, I have always thought High Enough by Damn Yankees sounded like it.
Seconding Cinderella "Don't Know What You've Got"
Played that for my 4 year old son the other day... Song aged well.
This list had me thinking of plenty I had forgotten about. Love it despite just missing the cut for geriatric millennial.
My list has on it; Youth Gone Wild, Nothing but a Good Time, Every Rose, Kick Start My Heart, Photograph, Round and Round.
This is not a definite list, plenty more could go on it.
I remember watching that Looks that Kill video when I was a kid. It was awesome then and it still is.

Tawny Kitaen was really hot.

Indeed. She's the quintessential musician's girlfriend who gets to be the rock video babe. And fortunately she was in multiple Whitesnake videos.
