Possibility that those stripey things are not the night game jerseys
This is from Maize-n-brew but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere on here amidst all the panic...rule 1-4-4-f states that legal uniforms must have "Clearly visible, permanent Arabic numerals on one jersey at least 8 and 10 inches in height front and back, respectively, of a color in distinct contrast with the jersey."
Since those...unusual...prototypes do not have a number nor room for an 8" number on the front, they cannot be the ones we will wear in the game, can they?
They could replace the block M on the front with the number
Don't give him any ideas. He might just say screw it, let's get rid of Leaders and Legends instead.

Fuck it. Everybody Panic!
Oh, come on, Dave Brandon, you act like the Free Press has presented materially false inside-the-program information before -- cynical bastard.
Since we've all seen the 2011/2012 Michigan jerseys, this confirms that we're getting some kind of alternate jersey, no?
Wow. The twitter pimp hand abides.
it's at least worth mentioning that the jerseys were leaked from somewhere. i didn't actually read the story, since i don't click through on principle, but it's at least possible that the AD wanted to float a jersey idea to get fan feedback.
this is more likely given how Brandon presented the coaching search, though it's entirely possible that the FP has some connection to Adidas too.
Also, recall how Brandon made sure the proposed move of the OSU game to midseason leaked out.
DB with the Twitter judo chop. Nice.
Also, DB said there would be a night-time unveiling of the night-time jerseys, so I feel much better now
No matter what the uniform ends up looking like, Denard is going to make it look awesome. Silly looking uniform or not, it'll still look badass with Denard lighting turf on fire.
The problem with the stripes is that at Denard's speed, they will blur to green. UM has to stick with one dominant color and keep the accent color sparse.
Dude I understand that blue and yellow make green, but I dont want to ever want to see Denard in a green jersey unless it is an nfl jersey after the 2012 season.
I'm starting to think that David Brandon is a big believer in the "door in the face" approach. Whereas the "foot in the door" approach involves asking for something small/trivial before asking for a bigger favor, "door in the face" involves asking for something crazy first so that your next request feels reasonable by comparison.
Remember that he implied that UM-OSU might no longer be the final game of the season before we learned that they'd be in opposite divisions.
Expect a alternate jersey that's stupid but not as stupid as the one published.
Not quite getting the "door in the face" analogy, but this is exactly what I think he's doing, The funny part is he had it leaked to the Freep, maybe even just so he could tweet the tweet above.
Maybe he hates the freep as much as we do, and loves watching them publish foolish stuff.
Cialdini? Lupia's class?
But yes, I couldn't agree more.... DB is all about this technique.
So the hope that it could be a maize jersey lives on...
Those stripey jerseys are apparently what the night game jerseys will be MODELED after. I'm pretty sure that exact design isn't what they're wearing. Some modern additions will obviously be added along with anything that needs them to be game legal.
in one of those jerseys.
One mantra - stick to the basics and tradition. We all know what happened when we tried to change who we were.
I just want to push on this it's not tradition defense a bit.
Question: it is OK to break with tradition and do a night game in Michigan Stadium (Bo was adamantly against night games, preferred a noon start, and did not even like TV starts at 3:30), but it is not OK to draw on Paleozoic (as Brian calls it) program history and wear striped jerseys?
I'm not saying I like the striped jerseys, they are kind of ugly, but they do link to Michigan football over 100 years ago.
Which is it: stick solely to tradition (in which case you should be railing against the night game as well), or try something different for one game as long as there is a clear deference to Michigan football?
Me personally, the night game is going to be cool. If they want to draw on Michigan uniforms from the 1890s for a throwback, I am OK with bowing to history way deeper than 1969. Especially since it is only for one game.
Bo said at one point that he preferred 1 p.m. over any other time. If it were Noon, then it was likely that accommodations were being made for TV. All those old school coaches hated that notion.
It's a good thing the rule states they must be Arabic numerals, otherwise we could just claim every player is number 1000.
We would rack up numerous V yard penalties for having more than one player on the field wearing the same number, tho.
Just retire Desmonds number and go with the 1991 jerseys (with helmet stickers) and be done with it.
Good answer! Good answer!
And have Grbac show up as well so he and Desmond can recreate the 4th down catch at halftime.
the NCAA makes the rules. By definition, they can re-write their own rules for "special games".
Yep. The NCAA granted UCLA-USC waivers of the jersey rule restrictions for their game a couple of years ago.
Hopefully DB talks to some people to get opinions before he releases these jerseys unlike what Delaney did with the leaders and legends junk
That's my hope as well. Get some feedback first before unleashing something on the fans that has the potential to look sucky. Case in point: Remember Tom Goss and that ugly yellow halo around the outside of the big house?
Delaney has always been clueless. He actually thought fans would LIKE the legends and leaders division names. I have to think Brandon isn't as stupid. This is the first night game EVER at Michigan Stadium. It's something many of us never thought would happen.
Don't screw this up, Brandon.
I sent an email, everyone else should too
As an official, I said the exact same thing when I saw them.
I really didn't think there was a way to top those badger looking "big chill" hockey jerseys for sheer unadulterated ugly. Shows what I know. These things are truly an affront to all those with eyes . . .
uniforms will be sold at Wal-Marts
all for not making this a "Hey let's start a petition and send it in, we can change the world" thread. Hate on that jersey all you want, but thanks for not going the whole "we can summon blog power and demand to be heard" route.
Also, the Brandon tweet is telling. If he actually used the Freep as an unintentional participant in audience response, then that's pretty awesome. We'll see what happens...
That has it's problem solved before the shirts even deliver. But it was worth it. That was my protest for the decade. And still seems more timely than my Forcier Vader shirt.
FWIW, I read somewhere that the uni's that were "leaked" by the Freep were only prototypes. I don't remember where I read that and don't have enough time to verify, but did someone else see something similar?
Neither school has revealed its jersey...
Michigan's jersey, according to a sample provided to the Free Press, will be modeled after the image shown above.
They're not even a prototype. The jerseys will be MODELED after the ones in the picture. They could end up looking quite a bit different. I was surprised when the whole board assumed these were the actual jerseys. Maybe no one wanted to read through the Freep article?
I have the pictures of everything Adidas related for the night game and have seen the hats, hooded sweatshirts (really cool) for the players and fans. I have actually known about the special uniforms since January, but unlike coaches at Notre Dame didn't feel it was my place to share that info. There is a t-shirt jersey like they do for the tigers and wings and all those teams that is close but not the same as the picture of the jersey released by the freep. Also they created this for stores to order product and show both the Michigan and Notre Dame stuff. That being said it is for sure a throwback as most of the stuff resembles the early 1900's, however, the jersey image for both teams is just a black shadow. Although it could easily be the leaked picture I am sure there will be a patch or something to showcase the special game and have a feeling it will be different from that picture. That being said when you see the block M on the front in person it has a lot of patterns to it and is very cool. The hats the players will be wearing are in my opinion fairly unexciting though.
Might as well put the fellas in dresses. Then again, it would be funny to spank ND with our team wearing dresses. Denard zips past them in a blur of pink chiffon...
mvictors has an article on possible origins of the M-ND 2011 Prototype Jerseys: http://mvictors.com/?p=10213
I really don't want to look like Ronald McDonald when we play the first night game...
We won't look like Ronald McDonald. He has his shoes tied.
How is this flamebait or offtopic?
I can find evidence to barely suggest that we wore game jerseys with stripes for only two seasons, 1890 and 1899. In the team photos for those seasons, one player on each squad is wearing a striped jersey under a light-colored outer sleeveless tunic. The other players in both photos are also appearing to wear game uniforms, but with no stripes in evidence. It's impossible to know what were actually worn on the field from these photos, but it's a dramatic leap to conclude that regular game uniforms included striped jerseys, especially since only ONE player in each team photo was wearing stripes in the context of a uniform.
In the 1888 and 1889 team photos, many of the players are wearing what appears to be game uniforms with no stripes, and others are wearing what appear to be striped sweaters. The sweaters do not look like game uniforms; they simply look like sweaters.
In the 1884 team photo, one individual is wearing a striped sweater, but the other players are wearing what are clearly game uniforms, and all of them without stripes.
In the absence of any other compelling evidence, such as actual photos of game action, I think the notion that Michigan football players have ever worn stripes during games is debatable at best. Even if such evidence were produced, it would still be the case that the number of years that Michigan has worn stripes on jerseys constitutes a tiny and historically insignificant part of our uniform tradition.
It's asinine for David Brandon or Adidas or anybody else to focus on a few undocumented years in the 19th century for "throwback" ideas while ignoring the entirely stripeless uniforms worn by the teams under Fielding Yost, teams which established Michigan's football dominance for the era.
