Wolves naturally come down…

Wolves naturally come down from Wyoming to Colorado quite frequently but are illegally poached by Colorado ranchers. They call it "shoot, shovel, shut up."

Sorry, my bad. I accidentally left my Tilly Hat at my dad's house over Thanksgiving so he couldn't see the beacon. Will be corrected in time for Pasadena.

I shot pretty much the entire 4th quarter near where he was sitting so I was probably blended in by the end of the game (just walk by, click click, walk away).

A lot of people think I'm a crazy bear guy, but I'll teach you how to take these photos (and show you that it's not actually that crazy).

Katmai is genuinely one of my favorite places on Earth and I'm so excited to share that excitement. Walking alongside bears is one of my favorite things and there's no place in the world quite like this.

(And it's not nearly as dangerous as it looks!)

There exists online somewhere a fan-cut version of the trilogy that brings it down to one four hour film that more closely follows just the book and it's pretty good. There is a good movie hidden in the trilogy, it's just riddled with clutter and pointless action scenes (and that love triangle).

With all due respect, I wore the same grey flannel shirt to this game as I wore to every game this season. So. Ya know. I'm not saying it was the grey flannel (but it was the grey flannel).

Last week Michigan snapped the ball with a defender offsides and they... handed it off and got like 10-15 yards off it. It was probably better than any downfield offsides heave.

I accidentally hiked right…

I accidentally hiked right by one that was in a bush just off the trail so... 15 feet was the closest? Minimum is supposed to be 50 yards (when you can) but there are SO MANY BEARS everywhere that you'll easily get closer than that on accident (or just trying to let one go by you on the trail).

Under ideal noon game…

Under ideal noon game lighting conditions I can typically get away with (and just kinda estimating here since it can change with even just a cloud but) around f/7.1 or f/8.0, 1/1600 to 1/2000 shutter speed, ISO 800 or ISO 1000. I'll shoot in AV mode so I just set the aperture and the shutter speed adjusts itself (just gotta keep an eye on it so that when I move into shadows it's not going down to like... 1/500 or something).

Night game settings for this one were manual mode at 1/1000, ISO 5000, f/5.6 (I don't have a really good f/2.8 lens besides a 70-200 but I prefer more zoom than that personally). I use an R5 and shoot RAW+JPEG, edit the JPEGs immediately after the game since they're easier to work with (and the R5 JPEGs remove almost all of the noise, even at ISO 5000). If there's a shot that's worth hanging on my wall I know I have the RAW and can make nicer edits to it later if I need to.

Maize outs also mess with the white balance a decent bit (and my laptop screen isn't the best callobrated one) so some of my night game shots end up being wamer than usual. Doesn't bother many people but sometimes bothers me when I look back, ha.

Well. I'm here.

Well. I'm here.

Photographing football and…

Photographing football and photographing wildlife are very similar. The actions are often wild and unpredictable. Also everything I'm trying to photograph could very easily kill me if they wanted to but are quite calm as long as you leave them alone.

One method is to just follow…

One method is to just follow the ball, but this can be tricky on pass plays since looking through the viewfinder is literal tunnel vision (and the ball sometimes gets to a receiver in less than a second). Oftentimes if I know it's a pass play I'll watch the quarterback (almost like a safety) and depending on where he's looking I'll anticipate who to switch to quickly to get a shot of them catching the ball (which can be hard).

Luck is huge, though. Best thing you can do is position yourself in as good of a position as you can (corner of the endzone is pretty good, sometimes I'll go right behind where the QB is snapping in the endzone if I think they're going to punch it in). Sometimes they score in the opposite corner and your shot just is what it is. Sometimes they score and stare right into your camera and pose just for you. Impossible to predict what they're going to do.

Example: THIS happened right in front of me and was insanely lucky.

Haskins Hurdling an Ohio State Fool was far away from me so I missed it and Fuller was the one to get that shot.

And sometimes you've had an idea for a shot for literally years but it never worked out and you're finally able to compose it in just the right conditions (most importantly the score):

I use a Canon mirrorless R5 as my go-to with a 100-400mm. Canon 6D Mk II with a wide angle is my backup for close-up shots but I don't use it as much. All the camera techno-geek numbers are in play (Saturday was very sunny so I shot most of it around f/7.1, ISO 1000**, 1/2000 ish).

*R5 handles ISO really well so I like bumping it up to preserve the sweet-spot in the f-stop when I can. These numbers will be quite different under the lights.
