WE'RE BACK TO CAPTURE ALL THE FOOLS BEING HURDLED (Patrick Barron/Bryan Fuller)

2022 MGoPhotos of the Game (Week 1): Colorado State Comment Count

BlueBarron September 5th, 2022 at 4:57 PM

After a long campaign of wrestling bears in Alaska I'm so excited to be back on the sidelines in Ann Arbor alongside Bryan Fuller. Each week during football season the MGoPhotographers (typically myself and Bryan Fuller, along with some guest appearances in the past from Marc-Gregor Campredon and Paul Sherman) work hard to provide you amazing photos, which you can view on our Flickr page. This year I'll be highlighting some of our favorite work each week on the front page.

Sponsor Note: Ok, well we don't have a sponsor.

BUT

If you'd like to support us, one of the simplest things you can do is follow us on social media (links just below) where we post way more photos than here. In the offseason I also do a LOT of wildlife/national park photography. While we're not allowed to sell any of our sports photos per our credential agreement (sorry to anyone who reached out asking about one), I sell prints from my adventures which I sell on FineArtAmerica. You can buy prints (or just look at some pretty pictures) here: Patrick Barron Art Collections

FIRST. AN APOLOGY. I do not have a good photo of Brad Robbins' mustache. I know it is legendary. I realized this after the game when I read twitter. I will strive to find him helmetless this weekend, I promise. This is coming from the guy who made a whole album dedicated to Lovie Smith's beard, you have my word.

To all of you watching from home who enjoyed this game in the air conditioning, I hope you had a pleasant experience. Because we did not. It wasn't just hot, but it was humid. And, because I care about you all so deeply, I wore the same outfit I wore to every single game last year (except Michigan State, sorry about that one) which was hiking pants and a gray button-up shirt. Maybe next time there's a >30 point spread I can justify actually wearing shorts. I empathize with the Colorado State players because my residence is also in Colorado so I'm used to the heat, but I'm no longer used to the air being soup. Why do people play football when the air is soup (or in the case of 2019 Notre Dame, the air is made of just, well, water).

Anyways, on to the photos:

I always marvel at the capture of the action shots.  How in the world do y'all do that?  How much is anticipation, and how much is good fortune?  Also, what kind of equipment do you use, and what kind of techno-geek numbers are in play here (f-stop, ISO, shutter speed, etc.)?

This is just great stuff ... I *love* these photo collections of the game.

One method is to just follow the ball, but this can be tricky on pass plays since looking through the viewfinder is literal tunnel vision (and the ball sometimes gets to a receiver in less than a second). Oftentimes if I know it's a pass play I'll watch the quarterback (almost like a safety) and depending on where he's looking I'll anticipate who to switch to quickly to get a shot of them catching the ball (which can be hard).

Luck is huge, though. Best thing you can do is position yourself in as good of a position as you can (corner of the endzone is pretty good, sometimes I'll go right behind where the QB is snapping in the endzone if I think they're going to punch it in). Sometimes they score in the opposite corner and your shot just is what it is. Sometimes they score and stare right into your camera and pose just for you. Impossible to predict what they're going to do.

Example: THIS happened right in front of me and was insanely lucky.

Haskins Hurdling an Ohio State Fool was far away from me so I missed it and Fuller was the one to get that shot.

And sometimes you've had an idea for a shot for literally years but it never worked out and you're finally able to compose it in just the right conditions (most importantly the score):

I use a Canon mirrorless R5 as my go-to with a 100-400mm. Canon 6D Mk II with a wide angle is my backup for close-up shots but I don't use it as much. All the camera techno-geek numbers are in play (Saturday was very sunny so I shot most of it around f/7.1, ISO 1000**, 1/2000 ish).

*R5 handles ISO really well so I like bumping it up to preserve the sweet-spot in the f-stop when I can. These numbers will be quite different under the lights.

Oh, no! The defenseless bear is being attacked by a mean fish!

It's obvious from the photo that the poor bear was just being friendly and wanted to say Hi.
