SIAP: Gemon Green had a very good reason for wanting to get through the tunnel as quickly as possible

Submitted by FrankMurphy on November 1st, 2022 at 12:48 PM

I haven't seen the original Detroit News reporting on this, but it pretty much undercuts the already-tenuous Sparty argument that Green provoked the assault because he rushed into the tunnel in order to taunt MSU players.

For the "why was he even in the tunnel of his home stadium" crowd...according to the Detroit News, Gemon Green weekly rushes up the tunnel to be ready to see his dad, who is a trucker and drives up from Texas with limited time on his day off.

Legally, those players are screwed as can be.  And rightfully so.

And I'll give the MSU Admin credit (and Tucker too) for so far handling things as well as can be expected.

But their fanbase?  There's no cure for that other than a long, concentrated campaign by the MSU coaches and team to tone down their frothing anger and pathetic attitudes.  Football at the end of the day is a silly sport.  If you're at a point where you're condoning violence against human beings because of the jersey they wear, it's time to step away from sports for a while.  Sparty culture needs a wholesale cleansing because other than Reddit, their fans have been uttering disgusting in how they're reacting to this situation.

I'm withholding credit at the moment. So far we have 4 players suspended indefinitely. That's not nearly enough since there were more than 4 players involved, and some of the worst offenders should be kicked off the team AND expelled from school.

But it's also not the final verdict and more punishments will certainly be coming. So I'm in a "wait and see" mode in terms of how well MSU handles it or not. I have my doubts though.

I agree anyone just standing there and letting it happened should have been suspended.  They were blocking people from seeing it and getting in to help Green and JM.   As of now it hasn't been handled as good as it should be handled.   Now I can change my mind if in the end they are all suspended for the rest of the season and part of next season.   Need to make an example out of these players so this will not happen again in college sports.   If this wasn't football they would have been arrested already.

So the guys just standing right above Green and JM watching their teammates assault them should be innocent?   That isn't how it works.  It is like a getaway driver when someone robs the bank and shoots someone.   The driver is guilty and will be charged with the homicide but just not at the higher charges.      I am not saying that guys that were far away but anyone of the 10 that were surrounding the Michigan players are in fact guilty they didn't stop it and we're not letting anyone get through to help the Michigan players.  I got jumped before and three guys assaulted me, 5 guys in total but the twos guys who didn't assault me were still charged but with lesser charges. They were still involved and the fact they let 3 guys assault one guy was why they were charged.   Now if they were just bystanders and weren't friends with the guys then it would be different.    You can't help a illegal act happen and not be charged or claim innocence.

MSU coach Tucker and the statement they put out pretty much at the end states what factors caused our players to react this way.   Also they suspend 4 scrubs but there best defensive player clearly seen on video holding and swinging punches is not suspended yet?     MSU is a joke this stuff has been happening for 20 plus years in there programs in basketball and football.   Izzo and Mark were the ringleaders that don't hold players accountable for their actions.   It has carried over to Mel leading the way and using the same BS that Mark used.

Add in Reed was in the one video clearly taking part in pulling McBurrow into the one section and was in on it.  There were other players I've listed before but im getting tired of watching to remember all who took part.

B10, Kevin "my son plays at msu" Warren,   NOTHING, NADDA, ZIP..   2 1'/2 Days into the bland statement "we will fully investigate"  Nothing.  Msu so far no further suspensions..

I understand the point you are trying to make, but let's be very clear here...this has not been happening for 20+ years.

What has been happening for far too long is a slow-burn breeding ground for their culture of hatred. Its been encouraged and nurtured and fostered and covered up and enabled and has been varying degrees of awful.

Bad things happen in life, at universities and in athletic departments and usually there is a cry for justice in each unique case, but this is not the same. This is different.

This has sharp teeth and is Filthy.

The entire MSU family should be ashamed for this abhorrent, criminal and unprecedented scene.

To be intellectualually honest, this is going to be a very tough road for MSU and even to some degree, all of us. However the road must be taken, regardless of how heavy and difficult the journey will be, if it leads toward righteousness.

MSU has no leadership at the top and it has gone far back as I know.   How many basketball players have been arrested or accused of sexual assault at MSU since Izzo.   Off top of my head 20.  Supports Mateen Cleaves a serial rapist has another player live with him who is charged with sexual Assault.    Many other instances now I am not saying other Universities don't have problems but their are some where it continues to go on and not much punishment has happened at MSU for it.   Only time they take it serious is when media finds out.   All universities protect star athletes now in this world but MSU has had this type of stuff going on since Izzo became head coach.   When you let a head coach run the AD department and school that is where you get into trouble.

What is disappointing to me is that the MSU media corps is circling the wagons.  These guys are supposed to be the voices of reason in the room, and they're playing the "both sides" game or even blaming Michigan for their players' criminal behavior.   I guess we shouldn't be surprised when their fans follow suit.

You are right.

A guy on the local radio said that what happened was bad, but then had to mention that Devin Bush had scuffed up the Spartan logo at midfield.  1) Years ago, 2) Not a violent crime, 3) Spartans actually provoked that through their intimidation tactic of arm link walk when UofM had the right to be on the field pregame.

It was not “the Spartans” that provoked Bush it was the man at the top. The leader of the program and the adult in charge.

Dantonio led the walk arm in arm with a smug look on his face knowing exactly what he was doing. Bush stood his ground as he had a right to do.

What kid on that team would say hey coach this is Michigan’s scheduled time for the field.

Such is sparty hatred for Michigan.  I grew up in Lansing and have lived here most of my life, this has gone on for decades and will never change.  There is absolutely no chance of a wholesale cleansing.  Unless their is some sort of tectonic shift in the management of the university to the point that it becomes a world class institution.

It goes beyond sports.  Dantonio is worshipped around here because he leveraged that inferiority complex and had success with it.

Windmon has yet to be suspended because he's actually a decent player unlike the rest of them. Also it's not great when Mel "apologized" but not to the Michigan players victimized but instead to the MSU alumni and fans for looking like idiots. Classic "sorry we got caught and made you look bad" instead of a genuine apology for to the people hurt.

Hopefully Mel and MSU conclude this episode with class

Agree, the law will sort this out and Sparty will be held accountable.  But even raising the reason of why Gemon Green was in the tunnel plays into Sparty's hands.  Because it SIMPLY DOESN'T MATTER.  He was jumped by thugs.  The  "jumped by thugs" is all that matters.  Everything else is noise trying to distract everyone from the real issue:  two young men were physically assaulted by a mob.  And now the members in the mob need to be brought to justice.

Some of us are patient enough to wait to hear all the evidence and make a decision on what (we think) happened and whether those at fault got their just deserts. New threads every hour so people can express their outrage anew is pointless.

Given I think this contradicts what I read a couple days ago, waiting is still a great idea. It's a shame media members don't bother to verify with a second source anything before they post it.

Imo, these posts are far worse than the posts they criticize. It's a Michigan sports board discussing Michigan sports. And not just Michigan sports, but the biggest story of the football season so far. Why would your first reaction be to scold the OP? I don't get it.
