SIAP: Gemon Green had a very good reason for wanting to get through the tunnel as quickly as possible

Submitted by FrankMurphy on November 1st, 2022 at 12:48 PM

I haven't seen the original Detroit News reporting on this, but it pretty much undercuts the already-tenuous Sparty argument that Green provoked the assault because he rushed into the tunnel in order to taunt MSU players.

For the "why was he even in the tunnel of his home stadium" crowd...according to the Detroit News, Gemon Green weekly rushes up the tunnel to be ready to see his dad, who is a trucker and drives up from Texas with limited time on his day off.

Well that in itself is grounds for a vicious assault. I hope he wasn't also happy about the team victory enroute to his locker room in his own stadium....the nerve.

There has been an AWFULLY HEAVY rhetoric that these 2 guys went into the tunnel specifically to taunt MSU players.

Which..

A: Doesn’t matter as they could have ignored or jawed back. And certainly didn’t deserve to be beaten down by cowards 10 on 1.

and

B: Is complete bullshit and only exists in the echochambers of Spartan message boards. It was very convenient how the usual suspects right away piped in immediately after with their “Word on the street is” this and this happened. Which has been proven to be made up BS. It was a quick defense mechanism that insulates them from all the blame and can live on as another chapter in Spartan Folklore where everything UM has done is terrible and somehow the world never knows about it because the “Blue Wall” always protects them. It’s a sad life to live but hey, sometimes it’s all you have.

The point is, regardless of why, he shouldn't need to justify running into the tunnel. And the actions following were clearly not justified, whether he was there to taunt, take a shit, see his dad, or pray.

Valid as that may be, it doesn't matter.  Regardless of why he went up the tunnel, he didn't deserve to be the victim of a felony assault and battery by multiple people, some of them using weapons.

At the end of the day this shouldn’t matter. However, if it can convince a few more humans to find their humanity instead of hiding behind their tribalism to victim blame, I’m all for that. The more reasons that pile up that show how insane they are being by blaming our guys, the better. It shouldn’t matter, but the fact that it does reflects badly on them.

MSU should be watching social media, find the accounts of people that are glad this happened or down playing it and banned them from any Michigan vs MSU game from now on. Including press

We need to take these clowns off the regular schedule with a realignment.  Their obsession has evolved into something unhealthy for both programs.  Tucker’s behavior throughout the game was evidence enough.  Yes Harbaugh has shown salty sideline moments, but never a sustained rage/anger akin to what Tucker displayed Saturday.  What happened in the tunnel is hardly surprising given how whipped up into a frenzy their leader and likely many of them were.

Legally, it doesn't matter what his reason was.  He was allowed to be there, as there was no rule prohibiting him from being there (as far as I know).

One likely outcome here is that Green and Burrows are going to get cash settlements from MSU, and the amounts will probably dwarf whatever NIL they might receive.  MSU could fight it, legally, blaming it on the players and claiming they acted outside their rules, but they would be foolish to have all that fought out in a public trial.

84 - two aspects to this - one is criminal and the other is civil.

Now, the civil case may be settled out of court with a financial result.   But, criminal cases don't end that way.

I wonder how long it will take the prosecutors / investigation to yield an action - specifically, charges against the offenders.

Thank you for sharing this, I've gotten so tired of the victim blaming.

My answer to "why were they there?" has been "because they are entitled to be and to not be assaulted while doing so" but this is even better.

Which falls clearly under the original response of: "what difference does it matter why he was in the tunnel?"

Other acceptable answers: needed to poop, wanted to call his GF, had to catch a ride to somewhere, wanted to jump in the shower, or any other reason one might go up a tunnel and into a locker room.

That his reason for entering the tunnel was innocuous is absolutely unsurprising, because it was a disingenuous question for "reporters" to ask in the first place.

Good information about Green; nonetheless (I'm sure we all agree), "He made fun of me" isn't a justification for assault and battery or other applicable charges.

These MSU players appear to be straight up thugs.

Accountability is a good idea.

Little brother threw a fit, stomped their feet and tried to beat up big brother. Thus, they lived up to their name, little brother. Now go to time out losers.

Sparty is doing the minimum as always.

Windman held a guy while his teammate hit him with a helmet.  Nothing

Reed is clearly seen in the corridor where the Michigan player was dragged.  Nothing.

Holy crap! This hit home with me. I have a 20-year old son. I can't imagine the guilt I would feel if I was waiting on the other side of the locker room for my son, who always leaves team celebrations early so he can spend a few extra precious minutes with me, and then find out something like this happened. My son would do the same thing as Gemon and German do.

My heart hurts for Mr. Green.

I'm not sure Gemon needs an excuse. However, if he's giving one, and that's it, it's surprising to me German wasn't with him. Then again, I had my own weird relationship with my dad so maybe German not being there was meaningless. I'm rambling. Whatever. I feel terrible for Gemon and I hope he heals quickly and his attackers face justice.

The same Spartan fans who were outraged at Devin Bush scuffing their ugly logo at midfield are now making excuses for assault with a deadly weapon. Worst fan base ever.

The talk in East Landfill...

The tunnel

Not enough security to stop them from going Sparty

UM tried to run up the score

Green ran ahead of his team

UM can't win with class(?)

No one died

The media hates Sparty

So he didn’t celebrate on the field with his other 100 teammates so he could enter a lions den of beatdown Spartans to pick a fight? Color me shocked. I guess all RCMB called this wrong.
