Well here we are again, the 7th blowout win in a row. I'm running out of unique and clever things to write about here, but there's always at least one gimmick in these games, so let's spin the roulette wheel and see what it ends up on:

**RAIN GAME**

Oh.

We were overdue for a weather game [Patrick Barron]

Not even an apocalyptic rain game like 2019 Notre Dame. That game was an experience that was awful enough to be memorable. But given the results, I suppose it was fun bad? I'll never forget getting dropped off at the airport immediately after that one and the third shift TSA guy took one look at me and my rain soaked everything and asked "...you came from the game didn't you?" Turns out wet clothes set off everything in the body scan machine.

No, this game endured a generic drizzle that you don't quite notice until you get back to the car and realize you're soaked and cold and your ticket stub is just ruined enough to look different from the rest of the season's ticket stubs in your 2023 collector's case.

Weather games at least make for some unique photos like water droplets getting launched off the players after a big hit [Patrick Barron]

Michigan Indiana football games are often unmemorable but for about 25 minutes of gameplay this was almost starting to look like an uncomfortably memorable game. "That 2021 Rutgers game" but with rain.

But the game reverted to the mean late in the 2nd quarter and in this case, the mean was Michigan scoring 52 unanswered points.

And then the offense sighed and said "ok fine" and shortly after, the ferret gave one last gurgle and that was it. [Bryan Fuller]

So now here we are, Michigan is 7-0 and it feels like we're still waiting for the season to start.

Since this blog is secretly a Lord of the Rings fansite I'll go ahead and say it. This season is like watching Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in theaters (so you can't just skip to the end). The last 30% or so is going to be some of the best cinema ever recorded, but until then we gotta get through the Aragorn and Arwen dream scene. Some people really like Treebeard and traveling to Nebraska, some just think it's filler. Harbaugh was even gone for a while and came back ala Gandalf the White.

And now we've apparently got the Rohirrim, too.

"Theoden King stands alone."  "Not alone." [Patrick Barron]

None of this is bad, oh no. Lord of the Rings at its worst is better than New Star Wars at its best (shame me in the comments, Andor fans). All things Rohan are awesome and there's still nowhere else I'd have rather be on Michigan Indiana day than at the Michigan Indiana game. But we're like... at the scene where they're traveling from Edoras to Helms Deep and I'm realizing an hour and 45 minutes have passed and I'm getting a little anxious to just get to the good stuff.

This pretty much sums up the whole experience. It's cold. It's wet. It's rainy. But like... it's fine! We have coffee and are enjoying some nice Tuttle Time. Sam's really excited about oliphants. Neat! [Patrick Barron]

We're almost there. Next week is the warg attack scene where *realizes what happens to Aragorn* THIS WAS MAYBE A BAD METAPHOR I WILL END IT NOW.

Mike Barrett with the sack. Mike Barrett with the forced fumble. Mike Barrett with the forced fumble recovery. Hell, Mike Barrett probably took this photo with my camera, too. [Patrick Barron]
No no, he's not playing for Indiana anymore. This is not a "fool hurdled" moment. [Bryan Fuller]
Your dog when you usually feed it at 7:00 am and it is 7:01 am [Patrick Barron]
There's a video of Harbaugh doing this when he was a QB so was this... something he learned? [Bryan Fuller]
MAXIMUM ZOOMIES [Patrick Barron]
THIS WAS NOT FUNNY AT THE TIME but it's really funny now. [Bryan Fuller]
I'm scared of what gets unleashed when the cast comes off [Patrick Barron]
Also LOOK AT HOW HE SCOOPED IT UP [Patrick Barron]
I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo. And I also can't carry you. Because that would be a penalty. But I will push you in the direction you need to go. [Bryan Fuller]
LOOK OUT, COOKIE MONSTER. THE MERCHANT FROM RESIDENT EVIL IS SNEAKING UP BEHIND YOU. [Patrick Barron]
Blake Corum squeezing through a Blake Corum sized hole like it's Hole in the Wall [Bryan Fuller]
I play this with my little cousin. He's five. [Patrick Barron]
There was... a touchdown scored after this [Bryan Fuller]
Jehu Chesson's little brother, Dale Chesson in the maize and blue! [Patrick Barron]
"I would cut off your head, dwarf... if it stood but a little higher from the ground. [Patrick Barron]
Thinking of warm, dry beds and treats [Patrick Barron]

Next week, I JUST HOPE BOTH TEAMS HAVE FUN.

Nothing bad happened to Aragorn in the book, so your analogy is still ok. It’s weird to have James Franklin as Saruman, although the white-out thing would sort of track.

I, for one, do not want both teams to have fun next week.  I want one team to have fun and the other team to continue their dejected trudge toward Ultimate Suffering.

In my version of LoTR as Michigan football, the Big House is Minas Tirith, the OSU stadium is Barad Dur, and Ryan Day is The Mouthpiece of Sauron with his oversized choppers and whining demeanor.

I got negbanged into oblivion for this a few years ago, but my attempts to redeem MGoPoints for premiums haven't been working of late, so what do I care?

Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring advanced filmmaking. It was brilliant.

His Two Towers was okay.

His Return of the King was a crime against literature.

His Hobbit thing was okay to watch once, I guess.

And..... ""Theoden King stands alone."  "Not alone." [Patrick Barron]" above gave me the hardest chuckle I have had in quite some time.

I'm curious to hear your reasoning.

At any rate, I've come to the conclusion that Two Towers and Return of the King would be infinitely better if you cut out Frodo and Sam...

"At any rate, I've come to the conclusion that Two Towers and Return of the King would be infinitely better if you cut out Frodo and Sam..."

This exactly. The battle scenes were beautiful to watch. But Jackson didn't seem to understand what made the Hobbits effective to Tolkien. Jackson tried to turn them into warriors, which was precisely not the point. Their strength was being loyal and "good." The same with Faramir, which I assume you are including as an extension of Frodo and Sam.

Jackson's Hobbit films were not good. I didn't mean to imply that. I just felt those to be less irritating than TTT and Return of the King. Hobbit was basically insipid -- not worth any emotion.

But, to Jackson's credit, Fellowship was one of my favorite films of all time. I especially enjoyed the extended director's cut.

Fellowship was brilliant. I put TT and ROTK on the same level as films. They were okay. I would say TT was better overall, but have to bring it down a notch for Gandalf being a literal exorcist while Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are rumbling in the Bronx in the background. Jackson took one of the most interesting scenes in the book and turned it into a cheese-fest.

But the ROTK has the army of the dead becoming Ghostbusters' Slimer and just eating through the siegeworks like acid cutting through styrofoam. So more cheese there. Again, took a great book scene and made it ridiculous.

For me, those are the biggest offenses of the films.

Hot take: the new Star Wars sequels (VII, VIII, IX) are way worse than the prequels (I, II, III). Yeah, the prequels had issues with writing, particularly dialogue (Anakin's was particularly bad) and characters (Jar Jar), but at least they had coherent stories. The new ones are complete garbage all around, not to mention that in many ways VII and VIII felt more like reboots than sequels.

And The Hobbit is a fucking terrible movie.

I still don't understand how they managed to turn a 300 page book into three movies...

Two photos from the full albums jumped out to me:

Patrick Barron's Album:

I can almost feel Karmello looking in that ball.  The focal plane is beautifully done, and the shutter speed captured the rain drops in mid-fall.  Outstanding photo.

Bryan Fuller's Album:

The sense of anticipation in that photo really jumps out.  If we celebrate this offensive line -- and we should -- that photo could serve as the cover shot for an article.  Again, outstanding photo.
