2022 MGoPhotos of the Game (Week 4): Maryland
Typically when photographing a sports team you want to position yourself such that the faces of the team you're covering are facing towards you (which would mean we are in the endzone that Michigan is trying to score in). This can change, of course, depending on the course of the game. If Michigan is playing Rutgers and the Scarlet Knights have gone through three quarters without a first down then you don't have to move around much. If the other team has a world ending offense it makes more sense to go to the endzone they're scoring in for better photos because if the story of game becomes "Ohio State is going to score 60 points" then, well... that's the story we have to tell (sorry).
This game was... confusing at times in this regard. The last three weeks were pretty straight forward because the ball only really went one direction so the photographers were able to camp in the endzone more than a Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer server. Maryland's offense was effective enough that I ended up running to the other side of the field way more than I would prefer to got some nice shots of Maryland celebrating. I know you don't want to see these but it's my job and it's the story.
I'll start to think "damn, well, if they really do pull it off at least I'll have good shots of Maryland." Because it's not about me or my deep-seeded rooting interests, it's about telling the story of the game. Sometimes the story isn't a happy one. I have to tell it. Still, the existential reality sets in. "I know we called this a sleeper upset but I didn't think they'd actually do it." There's an odd bit of closure that comes with photographing a loss. You're forced to endure it, accept it, and then edit photos from it for several hours. It's its own type of BPONE. You embrace it. For a brief time in this game those feelings started to marinate slightly...
...
...
BUT THEN BLAKE CORUM SAID "NOPE I WILL MAKE SURE YOUR WEEKEND IS NOT RUINED AND RUN RIGHT TOWARDS YOU FOR A TOUCHDOWN" AND I SAID "THANKS, BLAKE."
I like when Michigan wins. Now I can post photos of the game and people don't yell at me on twitter. Enjoy!
Sponsor Note: Ok, well we don't have a sponsor.
BUT
If you'd like to support us, one of the simplest things you can do is follow us on social media (links just below) where we post way more photos than here. In the offseason I also do a LOT of wildlife/national park photography. While we're not allowed to sell any of our sports photos per our credential agreement (sorry to anyone who reached out asking about one), I sell prints from my adventures which I sell on FineArtAmerica. You can buy prints (or just look at some pretty pictures) here: Patrick Barron Art Collections

Love these!
The Mike Morris thunder almost-sack might have been the turning point of the game, along with some Mazi Smith tackles around the same time frame.

The Morris sack was also probably the turning point of Maryland's season. An injured Maryland quarterback signifies the arrival of Fall as much as the changing of the leaves.

Mary Sue death glare!
"Charles is just not as professional as Urban" OSU and MSU fans
Were you on the other side every time Urban was walking back and forth from the tunnel? He was walking around the south endzone. Fans were welcoming him back to the stadium.

"It's its own type..." It's a small thing but thank you for its accuracy.
And the big thing: the pictures are great.
Personal favorites: APPRECIATED; presidential death stare; "exhale" (though the one-handed stuff made me nervous); Italicized Blake and eight-seconds JJ (tilt to his left, tilt to his right); Woodson vs. the twerked turkey.
Thank you.

I'm glad someone appreciated the accuracy of the grammar.

The bend on that Corum picture is insane.

Italicized Blake Corum. Clever.

The visual angles, athleticism, capturing of moment, and titling of "Italicized Blake Corum" are all perfect.

Both Morris and Coach H have pointer fingers up, is that a staff thing? They are lockstepped for sure.
Does it mean to the house? I am going to start doing that when our RBs go Denarding.

Not 100% sure but I think it's a signal for special teams to get ready to go for 1 (extra point).

They know it’s 6 at the 40 and for the xtra point team to get ready. No need to go for two.

Sure but if it's protocol to signal it you still signal it. Abundancy in communication is not a bad thing and prevents the small mistakes that lose games.

Beautiful, as always.
