2022 MGoPhotos of the Game (Week 5): Iowa
I'll sometimes go into a game with a certain thing in mind that I want to photograph – this week it was one of those “I CHEER FOR THE PUNTER” shirts. I figured I would find one eventually and it would be a silly photo. What I was not expecting was the entire dang stadium to be very on-brand.
A couple years ago I made a whole photo album dedicated to Lovie Smith's beard and this year's Iowa game I could dedicate an entire album to on-brand Iowa shirts and signs.
I appreciate the hell out of Iowa fans. They know their identity as a sports team (which has been the same for ~30 years) and they fully embrace it. For a time during this game I felt bad for them, that was until they started a “Fire Brian” chant and started hurdling stuff onto the field. Nothing hit me but at one point I looked down to my left and saw a can of Busch Light. Maybe this was dangerous, maybe this was simply a Kinnick Stadium baptism. It felt like the complete experience.
I photographed the 2016 Iowa game and was honestly impressed by just how quickly an entire field could go from smelling like a locker room to smelling like a dive bar. Kinnick night game juju is no joke. Thankfully this year was just a generically bad time for Iowa fans. Yesterday's atmosphere went from electric, to resolved, to anger, to excitement, to acceptance. It was its own five stages of grief.
Bless you, Iowa fans. But pls don't throw things at me anymore thnx.
Sponsor Note: Ok, well we don't have a sponsor.
BUT
If you'd like to support us, one of the simplest things you can do is follow us on social media (links just below) where we post way more photos than here. In the offseason I also do a LOT of wildlife/national park photography. While we're not allowed to sell any of our sports photos per our credential agreement (sorry to anyone who reached out asking about one), I sell prints from my adventures which I sell on FineArtAmerica. You can buy prints (or just look at some pretty pictures) here: Patrick Barron Art Collections
Also I just added a Katmai collection! Check out my pretty pictures of bears. Use promo code NHDXTV for 20% off.

... and waving to sick kids.

All the Hawkeye fans I've known have been good people. And the wave is a cool tradition. I have to assume the people throwing stuff was a small (maybe drunk) minority, like the Cade boos.

Maybe those fans of the punter have nothing to do with football.
Perhaps they're Anglophiles who are fond of British slang, including "punter," meaning a gambler.

I’ve always wanted to go to Katmai. How close did you get to the bears?

I accidentally hiked right by one that was in a bush just off the trail so... 15 feet was the closest? Minimum is supposed to be 50 yards (when you can) but there are SO MANY BEARS everywhere that you'll easily get closer than that on accident (or just trying to let one go by you on the trail).

I can confirm Iowa fans were on brand. A guy had a shirt that said, "Is this Heaven?" with stills from Field of Dreams but he's asking his dad to have a punt instead of playing catch. Also, at one point an Iowa fan in front of me yelled, "Run it up the middle!" somewhat sarcastically. They did. And he just said, "Good!"

I thought that Roman Wilson was targeted, too and I’m glad that Harbaugh was pissed about it and dressing down the ref. Gus and Joel didn’t mention this at all and didn’t draw attention to the targeting either, even though it was pretty blatant. Iowa corner (DeJean?) lowered his head and initiated a helmet to helmet collision. It should have been reviewed at the very least. But based on the poor officiating and questionable calls on both teams throughout the game, I’m not surprised that they missed this call.

You're good at punting, Iowa, and that's what I appreciates about you.
