that DB and JH have been talking all along. The question is whether JH wants the NFL or college football. The worst decision would be where JH takes the Michigan position only to wonder if he still wanted the NFL. Possble solution is to have JH go visit all the NFL options, 49'ers, Miami, Denver ... etc. After JH has all the data about the NFL, he then meets again with DB. I think if JH wants to stay with the college game ... it will only be with Michigan.
So the next meeting with DB will be the closure on JH. At that time JH will either pick Michigan or the NFL. From DB's part - this gives JH total control of his destiny ... after all the real decision is whether he fits into the NFL game. If he picks the NFL ... there's a 90%+ chance that he will be fired one day ... probably less than 10 years from now (that's just the way the NFL is) - hell, even Vince Lombardi got fired !!!
The college game is always working with kids. Building kids into football players and staying "young" as a part of the campus experience. So what kind of coach does JH want to be .... we will find out shortly.
Go Blue !

I didn't realize you were cool with us losing the only real coaching move we had that made sense just 'cause it's the NFL. To me the NFL is a notch above the WWE (which is a notch above the NBA).
January 6th, 2011 at 8:39 PM ^
and I really do not like this move at all if it is actually true. They need to get Bill Cowher and give him full control of that team. The reason for not getting Cowher is Ross was not willing to let go of his GM Jeff Ireland, which is a bad move. I wish JH all the luck in Miami, but I just do not see this ending well for him if this truly is the case. With the amount of money he is going to get paid, unreasonable expectations will also come with it. Also, the division he plays in may be the best division in the NFL. Right now, Miami cannot compete with the Jets or Patriots. JH will be looking for a new gig in 3 years and Michigan will not be open for him.
Just my opinion here, so take it for what it is worth. JH is intimidated by the Michigan job. He knows that there is some work to do here and I believe he is scared of failing here. So, he is looking for someone else to fix this mess. (mainly on D)) He has a lot of connects and friends here and the possibility of him failing is turning him off. Just my opinion here again.

Did I freakin' just double post right out of the gate? Damn. Whatever.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
If JH goes to the NFL it is because he wanted to not bc M was screwing any pooches. As CEO of 2 Fortune 500 companies you can be sure that DB knows how to recruit key employees and managers as well as negotiate the employment contract. Plus he is friends with JH and they know each other very well. No pooches were screwed. No balls were dropped. Simple.

...he who forgets will be destined to remember...
January 6th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
How have they agreed on ANYTHING? Have they even exercised the Rooney Rule yet? And have they even fired Sparano?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
But attribution is still to 790 AM http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2011/01/jim_harbaugh_reported…
January 6th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
Just curious...

What happens to a team that violates to Rooney rule? Do you just pay a fine but still get to keep the coach you wanted?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
Honestly, I have no idea, because I don't think anyone has violated the Rooney Rule since it's creation.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
I believe the Lions violated it when they hired one of the Ms (Mariucci?), and yes, I think it's a serious fine.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
You are correct:
In 2003, the NFL fined the Detroit Lions $200,000 for failure to interview minority candidates for the team's vacant head coaching job. After Marty Mornhinweg was fired, the Lions immediately hired former San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci to replace him without interviewing any other candidates
January 6th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
Considering they're talking $40mil/5years, I'd say that's not so bad.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
I don't mean that the intent of the rule is bad. I mean that owners can just throw the fine into the cost of doing business and get on with their lives. A more meaningful penalty would be the loss of draft picks.
January 6th, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
I agree the idea is good for the rule but like you said a more meaningful penalty...loss of draft pic
I think $200K is barely above base salary in the NFL, thats barely a slap on the wrist to a top $ player never mind a team
January 6th, 2011 at 5:44 PM ^
Because if we're not, then I'm confused...
January 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
agreed to the deal in principle
going to rush a Rooney interview
Sparano has reportedly been notified
January 6th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
i'd upvote the hell out of you on this one if I could . . .
January 6th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
I'm pretty sure Goodell is gonig to have a problem with Miami agree with a ocah even in principal before doing a RR interview. Far as I'm concerned, hiring someone before that even in principal should be a violation.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:20 PM ^
it's not official. anything unofficial can't be regulated.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
Yes, I know what you mean. But did anyone else do a double take and think RG felt so bad Rich Rod and his UM tenure he's requiring all NFL teams to give him a interview?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
That is one problem with the rule. Miami is in a tough situation, they don't particularly love their current coach, but seem willing to stick with him if they can't land Harbaugh. Well, how can you follow the rule if you are literally only considering making a move if you're going to be able to hire one particular candidate?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
January 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
I read a press release that Sparano has been fired and is being linked to the Michigan job. I will try and find the link. That can't be right, can it?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
That would really be a clusterf*&k. Harbaugh goes to Miami who is owned by Ross who is a major supporter of the University of Michigan who gets Sparano the former coach of Miami.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
http://phinphanatic.com/2011/01/06/breaking-news-number-2-sparano-fired/
Can't possibly be anything other than blog speculation. I hope to God.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
Would of loved for him to be Michigan coach, but if Miami is willing to pay him that amount, good for him. Love to see Michigan Men doing well.
Congrats Jim
January 6th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Yeah, congrats on selling at your peak value. Nick Saban, anyone?
Seriously though, I hope he's successful. Maybe he'll mold Henne into a better QB and keep him as the starter (Luck is staying at Stanford anyways so he should at least try for a year to improve Chad).
January 6th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
baffled by how much the NFL is willing to pay him considering he's never even coached at that level?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
baffled indeed but can't blame him .....if it's true
January 6th, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
Look at the draft. #1 picks automatically make top-5 salary and guaranteed money and they haven't played a down in the league. I'm surprised it took them this long.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
Than giving $6 million per to a proven NFL failure like the Seahawks did with Pete Carroll.
January 6th, 2011 at 6:50 PM ^
Greetings from the Evergreen State! That $6 mill is getting ready to host a playoff game this weekend. You gotta give Carroll a little credit for having the foresight to jump to the worst division in the NFL and be an instant 'success'. Sounds eerily familiar to his USC run...
January 6th, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
He is simply using NFL leverage to get market value for his contract here. Don't believe all the talking heads, because the fact is, they need something to talk about for a week.
HARBAUGH IS COMING, AND REJOICE.
There is no way Harbaugh sells out, for marginal money, especially in the fickle NFL.
and p.s. i need a pos bang, because i got negbanged to oblivion for suggesting Harbaugh over Rodriguez, months ago.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:20 PM ^
Does the Rooney Rule serve any real purpose? It seems to be treated like a complete joke.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
The Steelers hired Mike Tomlinson because of their Rooney interview. Otherwise the would have hired Russ Grimm
January 6th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
A) It's Mike Tomlin.
B) Exception =/= rule. That happened exactly once.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
Dats Raycessss!
/s
January 6th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
I know it's Tomlin. Damn IPhone changed it to Tomlinson.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
The rule is named after the Steelers owner for God's sake, hardly a good example.
January 6th, 2011 at 5:42 PM ^
If nothing else, it gets minority coaching names in circulation. I do think Tomlin's the only unexpected hire to come out of the process.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
I hope he is ready if this is true; I heard Rosenberg likes to punch Dolphins.
January 6th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
Few things I would like to see more than a fist fight between JH and Rosenberg. Mostly because I know who would win.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
So much for Harbaugh and wifey not wating to leave the west coast.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
well the ultimatum may have been nice weather, not nice weather on the west coast.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
I hope he succeeds but if he doesn't I wonder if he will regret not taking the Michigan job?
January 6th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
... Steve Ross wants to be Jerry Jones in sandals, roaming the sidelines. He sees Harbaugh as stealing some of the thunder of the Heat and the Three Amigos.
This will end badly. I think the over/under for Harbaugh's tenure is about 3.5 years. By that time, Brady Hoke can bring him in as Asst QB coach to Scot Loeffler.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
Ross is a powerful alum and has done a lot for Michigan, but this is extremely poor practice. He still has Sparano. He is drawing some parallels to Brandon.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
Brandon at least refrained from any public courtship of coaches while RR was here. I can't believe what Ross is doing to Sparano.
