Remember that Schwartz tried to challenge a play that was supposed to be auto review. Because he challenged it, they called a penalty and nullified the review.

Great work! As a practicing emergency physician, I agree with your overall message and strongly support your effort to inform.
I will, however, disagree on you continued use of a concussion grading scale. Both the American Academy of Neurology and the Concussion in Sports Group have dropped grading of concussion from their recommendations. When I talk to patients and their families, I do not use the grading scale for a number of reasons:
1) The scale had no prognostic value. A person who graded as "mild" could have cognitive effects that are more significant and longer in duration than someone graded as "severe." As you point out, recurrence of concussion, especially soon after a previous concussion is the most important factor.
2) When a concussion is termed "mild," it just serves to downplay the severity. Families always want me to tell them its "mild" and their future scholarship athlete can go to practice tomorrow. They get bummed when I tell them "no."
3) Its not an accepted diagnosis anymore.
I have a huge problem with Brandon using the term "mild" in his press release because no medical staff person, especially a neurologist who is a world expert in concussion, would use that term. I agree with you on the "probable" piece. You either have on or you don't.
Overall, great work! Just had to nitpick on a nursing colleague a little. ;-)

I just don't think it is an issue in a competent coaching staff. I think that Hoke has created a setting where people are afraid to communicate with him. I think a better managed team doesn't let this happen.

M-dog, Brian implied that all day yesterday was a struggle between management and the medical staff. There is no struggle if everyone is in the same page. Plus, Brandon minimizes the incident by calling it a "mild" concussion. Concussions aren't categorized any more. A concussion is a concussion is a concussion. The medical staff, especially a neurologist who specializes in concussion, wouldn't call it anything else.

We agree about the overall problems - but to be super-clear - "Mild concussion" is absolutely NOT a current medical term
|3 weeks 21 hours ago||Thanks, Brian.||
Thanks, Brian. As an MD, I am pleased to hear that the medical staff wouldn't bend. Not that any more fuel is needed, but if Brandon asked a medical person to change their story - that is also grounds for immediate dismissal.

Concussions do not show up on CT scans. They are diagnosed by symptoms. The most objective way is to use one of the standardized screening tools. If something shows up on CT - then it is a more serious type of TBI.
|3 weeks 21 hours ago||Pleasant academic debate||
I would disagree with your interpretation of the websites you linked.
Just a few years ago, we used to grade concussions (1,2, etc) and call them mild, severe, etc. We no longer do that. The most recent American Academy of Neurology guidelines specifically do away with "grading" them. It was mostly abandoned because there was no predictive value categorizing them. The ultiumate outcome (length of symptoms an cognitive impairment) cannot be predicted from the initial insult.
A concussion is sometimes called a "mild TBI" because a "major TBI" is something has positive findings on a head ct and often requires surgical intervention.
Calling something a "mild concussion" is just trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

1) Mild concussion is not used as a term anymore. The truth is that no one knows how long symtpoms last. (am an ER doc). We tell people that a concussion is a concussion and should be treated as a serious brain injury. There are no mild brain injuries.
2) How does one do a comprehensive review of the incident but not speak to the head coach? Hoke said that he didn't speak to Brandon.
3) Did Shane participate in anything yesterday? Hoke said he saw him yesterday at practice. He didn't participate fully because of his "ankle sprain."
I feel horrible for these players - most particularly Shane (and Devin)

His lips are moving.
As a Michigan grad living in Portland, I can tell you that the noveau football world that is Oregon is painful to be around. However, Lyerla has been in the paper a ton here and he is basically a showboat and a liar. Don't get me wrong - I am sure that a lot of funny business happens around that program but I wouldn'y believe anything that came from that source.

I remember when they went to GA, the upperclassmen who had waited their turn for good seats were pissed. The reality is that people want to sit with their friends AND have good seats. Freshman have no idea who their friends are and I think a lot of the moving around was with Fr and So students.
I would make Fr. and So tickets true GA. Let them sit wherever they want in their sections. It would also stop the section from looking so empty at the start of the game. Jrs and Seniors and Grads can pay one price and sit in GA or pay a small premium for assigned seats that are in better sections.
Let them sell the tickets. The University needs to stop worrying about the "lost revenue" of students selling seats. Especially given its partnership with StubHub, I think it will actually result in more loyal fans. Students often have friends and family visit and would love to bring them to the game.
