1988 Great Lakes Invitational Championship (Video) - Michigan vs North Dakota

One benefit of my wife making me clean out the basement was discovering some old video tapes, including one of the 1988 GLI championship between Michigan and North Dakota.  This was the first of nine straight GLI championships for the Wolverines, and they did it in stirring fashion, coming from down 5-1 in the 3rd period to win in double overtime.  I have the full game on Youtube (it's almost 3 hours), so here is the link to the highlights, which I tried to pare down as best as I could (it's still around 40 minutes because I kept all the celebration and interviews at the end).  Video isn't in great shape (it's a 32-year old VHS tape after all), but I hope you enjoy.

I was at that game with my soon to be roommate and my auntie.  I know that we made it in one of the celebration shots after the 6th goal.  I think I’m in the frame at 42:02, but it’s an old VHS tape.  We were in one of the shots at the end in the old PASS replay.  I remember what I wore; I still have the sweater, but it shrank.  ?

it was 5-1 after 2, and I was driving.  (My roommate and I lived in south Toledo and my auntie was in A^2)  We were going to leave at the 10 minute make unless Michigan scored.  They scored.  Then a with 5 left, but they scored.  We left well after midnight — very happy.

My roommate had done his undergrad at University of Maryland.  He had never been to a hockey game; this was his first.  All I remember from when I moved in with him later was how great ACC b-ball was.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this, this morning. Much needed, after running out of gas on the way to drop the kids at school. <facepalm>

I believe this was the first year of "the streak" at the GLI. I wasn't there and didn't see it; this is the first time I've seen it. What an amazing move by Moes.

This was the era when I *really* got into M hockey. Felsner (favorite player in high school), Sharples, Brost, O'Connor, Stone, Pardoski. Pardoski was a beast; a collegiate Todd Bertuzzi. I still have my Rob Brown jersey from this era; perhaps not the most talented player or an elite goal scorer, but no one was going to outhustle him.

Red and the team were trying to so hard to get over the hump and past the first round of the CCHA playoffs. I was in the house the night they came out with the winged helmets for the first time, vs. BGSU in the playoffs (IIRC). Goose bumps.
