Welcome back comrade Knowledge. It's good to see you again. May your knowledge of the future happen and may there be no cosmic shifts that change the results you have so predicted.
My four playoff contenders are:
Yeah I know I picked Michigan. I picked Michigan to make the NCAA final four (well actually win it all) every year they've made the Tourney since 2007. It worked generally in 2012 and 2013 so why not for football?
Yeah I'm skeptical of the coaching staff. Doesn't mean I don't want them to succeed.

Excellent read. I was also a sophomore for that game. Personally, I remember 2007 fondly because the pain of those first two games, especially ASU, has diminished over time while that one shining moment of our team taking it to the vaunted overlords known as the SEC happened. It was even more awesome since less than one year earlier Meyer had campaigned for us not to get the rematch. In hindsight he may have been right but we really did take it to him that day. I was not an avid reader of this blog or really any blogs at that time but I do remember also thinking why couldn't we have always run the offense the way we did that game. I still do.
I remember everybody saying we had no chance of beating Florida, Tebow, Meyer, and the SEC. I was sitting on the floor on Mason Hall and had a dream that Tebow would get up from the field with turf on his helmet. That Capital One game was awesome and is one of my fondest Michigan memories. I guess this is how I've ultimately dealt with Appalachian State: I viewed Florida as the ultimate possible redemption to end that campaign.
Who knows what this year will bring but it's amazing to see the differing situations of both teams that took the field just seven years ago.
May this game be the start of a new golden age for our program.

Deveon Smith will get it after a 30-40 yard gain courtesy of Mr. Funchess (my phone just suggested this spelling, score one for Apple) after which Mr. Smith will punch it in from the 5 yard line.

If we do ultimately follow State's season from last year I would be ecstatic. I actually asked that question in the Chicago Alumni football preview about whether it is possible. Of course I asked a similar question for 2013 regarding 2012 ND so go figure. That would be the best season we've experienced full stop since I've started following in 2006.However, there would be some justifiable angst on here if we only beat this App State team 15-6.

Don't forget Shallman. I think he will have some good plays this year.

I also was part of a production of Oklahoma thought that was high school. I was part of the ensemble but I did get to purchase a saddle so the protagonist could get the girl.
I don't think Hoke is stupid and clueless as some people make him out to be but maybe he is not as great with the offense as he is with the defense.
|2 days 3 hours ago||I agree spot on about not||
I agree spot on about not throwing Lewan completely under the bus. Likewise I don't think RR, Gerg, Borges, or Hoke should be completely at fault for the limitations of the team the last few seasons. After all, this is a team game. In many instances nobody is completely perfect. Case in point last year the defense technically could have win a few more games for us if they had made crucial plays down the stretch. They didn't and we lost. This does not mean anybody is above reproach or criticism especially people like the coaches who are paid millions of dollars to do their jobs.
Side note: interesting choice to use the dalek as your avatar. If you're going to use a Dr. Who reference I would have thought it would be the tardis or something related to the Doctor. To each his own and I suppose that other guy has a stormtrooper costume and/or avatar. Not that important obviously I just found it interesting.

People thought the line would be poor but also said they would gel and get better as the season continued. That, as you well know, didn't happen.
This year people are saying they will start off poor but will gel and be better as the season progresses.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I really hope the OLine proves the skeptics wrong and kicks some serious tail this year. If they are even average I think we'll have a great year. Just is hard to see them getting to average this year though many people didn't see the defense making the jump from 2010 to 2011 so who really knows?
|2 days 5 hours ago||Well, last year we got rows||
Well, last year we got rows of shark teeth written after either CMU or Notre Dame so basically we're doing a 180 here. Maybe the season's results will also be drastically different than what many people expect. Maybe there were locker room issues that affected the team's performance. Maybe the Oline will gel at some point this year and perform better than the nation's worst OL unit.
That's a lot of maybies. You are 100% correct that not a single down has been played and right now the coaching staff is playing coy and knows they have a team that can do big things this season. I'd personally rather be pleasantly surprised than build up my expectations like last year only to have them run into a brick wall. I wouldn't insinuate that people who may not have the rosiest outlook for this season are hoping for a let down this year.

The announcers are almost as conservative as coaches. You do what you do best. Don't let up here and run, run, pass just to milk the clock. That's almost is not entirely as bad as the "prevent" defense.

I think Don had mentioned the other day he wanted to do some kind of gif for his avatar also. Maybe you could help him out?

Definitely so but we are getting to the end of Fall Practice. This isn't Spring Practice or the first week of Fall Practice any more. By now I thought they were supposed to have the roster in pen. Maybe that was bunk too. It may not work out well if we are constantly changing things and players don't gel.

That is one pissed off panda. Somebody get him some bamboo and coconut water.
Bring on the season. I'm excited to be able to go to the ND game with a bunch of friends.
|6 days 4 hours ago||I'm not going to get so rosey||
I'm not going to get so rosey as to predict an appearance in California. It definitely is possible but I'm not setting that as my expectation.
We do get a win in Columbus (more likely) or East Lansing which really goes a long way with me at least. That's what kicked off Beilein in terms of getting a lot of people to believe.
I really did have a great time following our basketball team in the infancy of Beilein's career here, and watching him progress with the team to get us back to the Big Dance after what was described to me as a pretty horrible time for the basketball program. Also, I was an out-of-state student from 2006 - 2010 so basketball was definitely a nice counterpoint to the football program. That "Aneurysm of Leadership" victory in Breslin Center though was pivotal in the shaping of the current state of the program.
In many ways Beilein, ironically since many people initially doubted him more than Rodriguez, turned out to be what many on this site wanted for Rodriguez and the football program: an offensive innovator playing an oddball system that found much success and brought our program to the epitome of the college sports world.
It feels like so long since we've won a football game in either of those places just like it once did in basketball. Hoke starts knocking down some of the doubts people have about his coaching ability with that signature road win that, in part, results from him making a critical game theory decision that proves to be one of the game's winning moments
I'll go with an overall record of 9-3, which for this year would be pretty good, since I'd rather be pleasantly surprised with a better record. This team has the talent. Make me a believer again, Coach Hoke.
Also, I will make an effort to not be as negative since after all at the end of the day this is just a game played by young adults.

If they aren't appreciably better Mr. Smith will just hit the opposing Linemen harder. They'll think twice of messing with this guy.
Mess with the best, succumb like the rest.
|1 week 2 hours ago||The funny thing is we put up||
The funny thing is we put up over 30 points per game last year. Unfortunately a lot of that was due to CMU and Indiana whose defenses were lacking. He wasn't consistent. If we can put up 27-30 points consistently this year then we could very well be in store for a good campaign.
|1 week 14 hours ago||It's great that they're||
It's great that they're playing so well and that Hatch has gotten into the game. That's unbelievable considering how happy we were that he could even walk again. Truly a miracle the recovery he has made so far.
I am a little worried about level of competition though these are preseason games and it's lucky the team is able to get this experience especially this year. I have to imagine that if hypothetically ranked in the RPI they'd at least be top 200 which, again for preseason, is valuable experience.
Glad to see these recaps. Thank you Ace.

I believe the reason for that may be that fullbacks are deemphasized in Nussmeier's offense.

I agree with you. Some people on message boards can't help it because as you pointed out you can use an anonymous identity. There was an article I read about how mods on many sites with comments get really depressed sometimes due to the stuff they see on the boards. I guess one solution is to remove commenting functionality entirely though that may be throwing the baby out with the bath water.
It's fine to disagree but there's a way to do it with civility and decorum.
