Baumgardner: Beilein Provides insight on assistant search
The quote about Patrick hardly warrants "it won't be Patrick." That is the precise quote I would expect for any candidate who has not yet been officially named. Not saying it will be Patrick, but you are clearly jumping the gun based on that quote.
I just read it as Beilein pumping the brakes a bit.
Patrick is so underqualified for this job. It would be laughable, albeit not all that surprising, if he got the job.
It would surprise me quite a bit. I like to think Beilein has more character than that. If he's the best candidate available, then okay, but I don't think he's even close to that. I could of course be very wrong, as I have only seen him coach against his dad.
It just seems like the typical uninspiring move that I've come to expect from the basketball program. Quite frankly, none of the names mentioned inspire too much confidence, though I do think Jermaine Jackson would bring a certain attitude that this program is sorely lacking.
I'm pretty disillusioned with the basketball program right now. I just hope that whatever JB does, that he makes the best possible decision(s) for our current situation.

They did it in our football program.

And no one does that anywhere... it's two different sports.
You're much more likely to find someone who's promoted a HS coach or a DII or DIII coach than someone coming down from the NBA ranks to coach college basketball.
It's not even close. You can kill that train of thought now, it just doesn't work like that. Maybe if your head coach in the NBA brings his assistants and/or they've worked in college before.
Let's get Luke Walton. It would be a step up from the coaching job he just accepted.

Draymond Green is not happy about all of this!
at this stage in each of their careers I'd rather have Beilein.
...but to say that you would rather have JB over Phil Jackson is ridiculous. While I agree, Phil Jackson is past his prime, so is JB. Phil Jackson would bring instant credibility, and recruits would come big time.

Larry Brown is one. Maybe Rick Pitino, depending on how you evaluate his NBA career - he was pretty good with the Knicks and awful with the Celtics.
Both have been blatant rule violators though.
Mike Dunleavy Sr. just took the Tulane job.
not to be a dick, but that's a pretty uninformed question for a Mich blog. L Brown coached a championship team just down the street (Pistons), then coached a college team (SMU) that Mich played this past year.
not to be a dick, but questions are by their very natiure uninformed, given that the asker is seeking information that he does not possess (discounting rhetorical questions).
This is one of my favorite comments of all time.
The Pistons didn't fire Brown because of his on-court performance, needless to say (two conference championships and an NBA title in two years).

People are getting too into the assistant coaches 'issue.' If I gave people in here a dollar for every current college assistant they could name in two minutes...I'd need to break a $20. That's it. He'll find someone good.
Said that the final scholarship will not go to Spike Albrecht, which was difficult for him. But a reality as UM has no room for a 3rd PG

Beilein also said he wouldn't rule out more roster attrition/transfers at this point. As he said "Things happen in May"

Here's Baumgardner's story on the assistants: John Beilein says assistant hires coming soon, fresh ideas and defense are priorities
Saddi Washington and Chris Hunter are two distinct possibilities.
