Wow, this isn't good. Warde denies apologizing to Webber
September 10th, 2021 at 3:31 PM ^
who cares
September 10th, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
Seriously. It feels like every 6 months some minor Fab Five-related drama pops up and we're expected to care. Who gives a shit. They played 30 years ago.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
Agreed on the "who cares" train. Loved the Fab 5, it was fun. Too much drama for a team that never won anything. They were cool and really fucking good, but didn't win......anything. Move on, I'm pretty sure the rest of us have
September 10th, 2021 at 5:18 PM ^
Well, some people really like stating what you posted, but it's just not true. They appeared in the Final Four twice, which means they won two Regional Championships.
So saying they didn't win anything... is over doing it.
September 10th, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
"Too much drama for a team that never won anything"
This is a seriously crappy take. They made it to two NCAA Championship games in BOTH years the Fab 5 played together. That means they won a ton of games and two regionals.
Believe it or not, there are many wins and accomplishments worth celebrating outside of winning a national championship.
September 10th, 2021 at 5:44 PM ^
They won a lot of basketball games. Which, when you're a basketball team, isn't "nothing."
September 10th, 2021 at 7:48 PM ^
They won back-2-back regionals in the NCAA tourney. A hell of a lot better than a conference title.
September 10th, 2021 at 10:11 PM ^
user name...confuses?
September 10th, 2021 at 7:49 PM ^
They changed the face of college basketball. They have not been duplicated.
September 10th, 2021 at 8:26 PM ^
There is not a single team in the history of college sports that is still remembered and relevant like the Fab Five. That this is the case speaks volumes about the prestige of Michigan.
The "who cares" line has an easy answer - essentially everyone that isn't a curmudgeon.
September 10th, 2021 at 10:13 PM ^
Chris Webber has been lying about just about everything since the Ed Martin stuff came out, and it's obvious. He threw Ed under the bus, has fired vague shots at Jalen, backed out of the doc, and now in these interviews has given his version of events which has continued to be incomplete, inaccurate and inconsistent.
It's honestly sad, because he's out here projecting a God fearing, spiritual image while not coming to grips with his own actions. He honestly can't be honest about his own feelings, and in these interviews has said other dumb shit like he'd rather be a leader on a team that doesn't win a championship than a role player (specifically a veteran star who joins another star's team) who wins one.
The worst of it is he plays the victim when he has caused the most harm to his teammates, and then has the audacity to call out Jalen for "code breaking" when Jalen has been explicit and consistent about everything that happened. Jalen has been obviously honest especially on things that put him in a bad light. Chris Webber is a phony, but in the end his extraordinary talent got him rich and in the HOF. I just wish Chris would get over himself. I don't believe a word he says when it's his word against anyone else's.
September 11th, 2021 at 12:04 AM ^
TL;DR - Chris Webber is a phony, but in the end his extraordinary talent got him rich and in the HOF.
There is a reason why TNT let him go this past year. He thinks the world of himself when he's just not that great of a person.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:34 PM ^
Seems like he just wanted to set the facts straight. Nobody likes it when people put words in their mouth
September 10th, 2021 at 4:45 PM ^
Yeah, and he corrected the record in the nicest way possible. Let’s not let a 0 day story turn into a >0 day story.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:34 PM ^
What's not good? Warde denying he apologized or Webber making it up?
September 10th, 2021 at 3:37 PM ^
From the article, the way I read it:
Warde: "I feel like I need to apologize to the 18-year-old Chris."
Chris: "So you're apologizing."
Warde: "Absolutely not, but I feel like I need to."
September 10th, 2021 at 3:39 PM ^
? Just the facts ma’am
September 10th, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
Well if we are taking score, I would be more inclined to believe Warde, since he's never lied to a Grand Jury.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
"But I can assure you I made no apology to Chris"
What is the point of even saying this? I just don't get it. A Fab Five reconciliation is wanted by fans and would be a huge money maker for the university
September 10th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
I don't know, what if some reporter asked you if you did something, you didn't do? Would you lie about it, just so the person who originally lied, didn't look bad?
September 10th, 2021 at 4:39 PM ^
I'm pretty sure Warde is skilled enough to give a non-answer answer if he had wanted.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:43 PM ^
I'm pretty sure you are 100% wrong in your take as a non-answer was called for on this very thing.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
A non-answer isn't needed. Something more forthright is needed. Even if Webber is misremembering/misreporting the conversation, he could say something like:
"What was said in a private conversation is between him and me. I don't recall those exact words, and I wasn't even with the University at the time, but I do regret that a valued 18 year-old student athlete wasn't better protected. That would never happen now. "
September 10th, 2021 at 5:04 PM ^
That word salad is a grade A non answer. I'm not sure the point you are making.
September 10th, 2021 at 11:54 PM ^
Protected from what, exactly?
September 11th, 2021 at 10:45 AM ^
Give this man an AD suit!
September 10th, 2021 at 8:17 PM ^
I'm pretty sure you are 100% wrong in your take as a non-answer was called for on this very thing.
His providing an answer doesn't mean he is incapable of providing a non-answer.
So, why did Warde answer? There are two possibilities.
1) He can't come up with a non-answer
OR
2) He wanted to provide an answer.
A person in Warde's position almost certainly has the ability to give a non-answer if they want. Therefore, it seems much more likely that response was given because he wanted to answer.
September 11th, 2021 at 9:35 AM ^
Warde fucked up. It can be because he was unable to form a proper non answer or he wasn’t skillful enough to manage the situation and know a non answer was appropriate.
You think he intentionally fucked up. That’s a fair take.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:23 PM ^
What's the point? Besides the truth?
September 10th, 2021 at 6:10 PM ^
Giving a non answer is much better than calling Chris Webber a lier...
September 10th, 2021 at 8:00 PM ^
Well maybe Chris Webber should try not being a liar? *shrugs*
September 10th, 2021 at 5:15 PM ^
Help me out. How exactly is a reconciliation gonna be a “huge money maker” for the university?
Is it going to be PPV? Is a network going to give M more money for televising a game where the Fab 5 are “re-united”?
Yes, it would be a nice moment but there is no significant financial upside the UM.
September 10th, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
It would get fans to the stadium, viewers on TV, and get merchandise sold. How would it not be a money maker lol?
September 11th, 2021 at 9:18 AM ^
The stadium is already full with our great basketball team that Juwan has assembled and the viewership is already watching thanks to many years of winning that Beilein has built.
September 10th, 2021 at 5:47 PM ^
"a huge money maker for the university"??? Should/Does that really matter to an institution with a $billion endowment? I just am not seeing the connection.
September 10th, 2021 at 6:12 PM ^
Did you seriously just ask if the athletic department making money should matter to the athletic director? Lol
September 10th, 2021 at 3:37 PM ^
Dumbest athletic department.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:38 PM ^
I get not wanting people to speak on your behalf. But can someone help me out with what gets accomplished by basically calling Webber a liar in a statement? Maybe I'm missing something but I didn't think what Webber said this week really put Michigan in a bad light, more felt like they were trying to mend fences.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
I think it's mostly not wanting Webber to speak for you. If the University is going to make a statement about the Fab 5 it should be communicated from the AD, not someone who may have a financial interest having a particular narrative. I think it's a bad look all around but also, Webber doesn't need to tell ESPN during an interview that Warde told him something.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:03 PM ^
I get that and it probably didn't help that Webber said "his exact words were...." But Webber's interview felt so inconsequential that a response seemed unnecessary and just adds to this petty bullshit in the media.
September 10th, 2021 at 11:19 PM ^
Sure, but Webber brought up this conversation and there really isn't an easy answer that Warde can give unless it's an official "we were wrong and should have supported Webber", which may be something they do in the future but, again, they may not want to do right now.
I think everyone in this situation comes across a bit badly, but I still think the reason I hold back a bit absolving Webber is he just has never accepted responsibility for his role in it all.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
yes, because no one should ever, under any circumstances, "basically call webber a liar."
unless you're on a grand jury, of course. in that case, fire away. you've got proof.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
I love Webber and the Fab Five. As a kid I saved my money to buy his gold jersey. Maybe we should stop rooting for this man to come back and be a part of UM again. He seems to have a problem with the truth and that's a problem.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:39 PM ^
This reminds me of the 21st century approach to optics:
don’t let the truth get in the way of a good narrative
September 10th, 2021 at 3:40 PM ^
Where in the article (or elsewhere) does Webber name Warde Manuel specifically? From the quote in the article, it's not clear he's talking about Warde. It could have been Jim Hackett, or even Dave Brandon, who reputedly treated athletes as well as he treated fans poorly.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
The reference I've seen is in this article wherein he says:
Webber: That's what happened. I was told [that] by the University of Michigan. I was told by the athletic director at the University of Michigan [Warde Manuel], that he was sorry. And he wasn't even there at the time [I was playing]. He told me that he did his research and that he needs to apologize. His exact words [were], he needs 'to apologize to the 18-year-old Chris Webber because we didn't protect him.'
September 10th, 2021 at 3:43 PM ^
As an outsider to this whole thing, everyone involved in this looks stupid and have looked stupid for some time.
Warde, STFU and stop rejecting good publicity - especially over something so petty and minuscule. Considering you run an athletic department that needs all the feel good stories it can get at this time, just let it slide instead of actively trying to come off like Jabba the Jackass.
Jalen, STFU (even if you aren’t involved this time) and reach out to your old teammate and bury a hatchet. Webber, STFU and learn to forgive without needing an apology to stroke you’re immensely oversized ego.
As I said, I don’t follow this story closely, but it’s stupid for all of these people to act this way. What a bunch of children being drama queens in the public eye.
Michigan’s biggest obstacle will always be Michigan.
September 10th, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
Now that’s objectivity. I agree ? because as of right now everyone is GAM and they should be able to address each other without the fricken press.
September 10th, 2021 at 3:46 PM ^
Warde eventually is going to be the reason Juwan goes back to the nba..one way or another. Where is juwan’s raise and extension? MAybe stop worrying about your apology ego and do your jobs!!
