Are you actually from the City of Detroit or just judging it continually from afar?

05/23/2018 - 9:02pm Just watch the Amazon series

Just watch the Amazon series to see how it is clearly not "just another game".  Harbaugh was essentially a non-functioning shell of a human being after the MSU and OSU losses.  I love the crop of armchair warriors criticizing a guy who literally grew up in the program, played for M and beat OSU and now lives and breathes to make Michigan the best in the country.  He let's you make your pivot tables and cold calls in peace so leave him alone as he does his thing, too.

05/22/2018 - 7:39pm This is super interesting,

This is super interesting, hadn't thought of that.  Also wonder if Lloyd might have gone south.

05/16/2018 - 7:38pm MSU will never be the same

This is an astronomical blow to MSU.  They will be paying more in debt service, they will have to delay infrastructure maintenance, and the reputational damage will be substantial.  I almost wonder how it would have looked at trial - every now and then you get a jury not willing to stick taxpayers with that type of insane number.

Lawyers likely received $15-20m if not more, for what its worth.  Probably a lot more.

05/15/2018 - 11:23pm Stop kidding yourself

You grew up in Naperville or something similar.  Nobody born and raised in the actual City of Chicago would share your views.

James has lost a slew of finals.  MJ would never lose an NBA Finals.  Plus the East has been hot garbage for most of LJ's career and was at its peak when MJ was dominating it.  Those Pistons, Knicks and Celtics teams would each win championships today but were stopped by 23 (and 33, of course).

04/30/2018 - 7:46pm Love the Fish

But Michigan needs an MGoDome to compete.

04/28/2018 - 7:52pm Thank you Wd

What chance does Mich have of getting to omaha?

04/27/2018 - 1:42pm Also

This is a good one but Ken Burns' best is "Street Signs" but you need to see the first three episodes.

04/19/2018 - 1:49pm Meh

You're pretty far off.  They are recruiting well again right now again so it wasn't just a Freeze thing.  It's in the SEC West, Oxford is an unbelievable place, the culture is football obsessed, the girls are ridiculous and it's a pretty awesome community.  It's also stuck in the 1860's so I am always a little surprised that so many recruits overlook that.  Would be a huge deterrent for me.

04/19/2018 - 1:45pm Truth

Those girls probably had no idea who he was, have no idea this photo exists and are likely married to (pick one): (a) a mortgage banker, (b) a lowish seven figures cotton/oil/agriculture heir, or (c) a personal injury attorney.  Persons (a) through (c) possess the frat shag, a dad bod, still park their Land Rover at the KA House on gamedays and live ten minutes away from the Country Club of Jackson.

04/18/2018 - 12:46am You, sir...

Are a national treasure.

03/29/2018 - 8:21pm Are you nuts?

"Michigan football is becoming the thing that we used to laugh at other schools about"

Is that "thing" playing Notre Dame, PSU, MSU, NEB, OSU and WIS in the same year?  Because that "thing" is harder than any other schedule in the country.  If you win the B1G, you're going to the playoffs.  It is that simple.  The focus should be on preserving our best chance to do that and if that means dropping an ACC game with no connection to Michigan history, so be it.

03/26/2018 - 2:13pm Not going BK

MSU will not be at risk of going BK.  Engler is a politico at heart and knew saying that would stoke enough fear in the legislature to get some help for MSU (or at least get their foot off their throat a bit).

Between sovereign immunity and other protections, MSU will survive this and the Michigan taxpayer will not be left holding the bag - U of M and MSU get a tiny amount of state tax aid anyway.

The endowment is going to take a hit, the bond rating is going to take a hit, federal grant money may stop flowing as much and they are going to have an uphill battle to get talented students to attend (which, much as people like to mock on this board, MSU has had plenty of talented graduates and plenty of fine academic programs).  I say all of this as a proud UM alum.

02/02/2018 - 1:55pm Skeeps was too far away

I was a four nights a week Rick's guy senior year.  Jug every now and then.  Charlie's less so.  TD's was the spot sophomore year.  Didn't attend class much.

That definition is also shared by all non-insane people.

01/26/2018 - 4:56pm Um...

The real Sparta is actually quite nice. I am assuming you've never been there.

I'm a UMich alum and I have never heard a fellow U of M alum refer to us as Athens.  I doubt an MSU fan would either considering they may not even be aware of why they are called Spartans.

They would be wearing red and not green if they were really trying to identify with the Greek Spartans.

12/15/2017 - 8:42pm That video

Gets me every time.

To the OP - best of luck, bud. I was deferred at first and then got in and it was a great moment.  Those four years fly by...

11/21/2017 - 9:29pm Good story

But Braylon still has him beat in my book.

11/20/2017 - 10:16pm Quit

Quit the faux virtue signaling. Braylon was a Michigan Man and total boss during his time here and OKorn is a pile of hot garbage on the field. Once you strap on the cleats at that level, you are open for criticism and it comes harshest from your predecessors who care about quality.

11/20/2017 - 12:48pm Stop embarrassing yourself

Braylon:

  • Pays for hundreds of Cleveland high school kids to go to college
  • First received in Big Ten history with three straight 1,000 yard seasons
  • Wins big ten championships with Michigan
  • Makes millions in the NFL

03/28/2017 - 2:44pm A NU to UM conversion via Grandpa

I grew up in an NFL city so I didn't really even notice football until Northwestern made their run in 1995.  My dad was an NU alum.

My grandpa lived and breathed Michigan and was from Detroit (U of D alum).  I remember him screaming at the television the day Kordell Stewart took Michigan out with his hail mary.  My grandpa looked and acted like Bo.

I got into Michigan and was overjoyed.  Wound up going there over NU even though I grew up with the Cats.  First game was against Miami-OH at the Big House in 2001 - I walked into that stadium from the top and meandered down to the student section with my newly made buddies and was forever a Michigan Man.  John Navarre hung a number on Roethlisberger that day.

I think my grandpa wore a "Michigan Grandpa" shirt roughly 4 days a week while I was there.  He was going in for surgery for bladder cancer on Friday 1/28/05.  For whatever reason, I decided to get in my car and drive from Ann Arbor to Northville to watch the U of M-MSU basketball game the night before just to make sure I saw him before that surgery.  Michigan lost but we ate steaks, laughed and had a great time.  I remember emerging from the house into the bitter, bitter Michigan cold and looked up at the stars - reminding myself that I hadn't attended my ridiculous Astronomy mini-course in about a month (pretty par for the course for me).

He died in surgery the next morning, a Michigan Man to the very end, to be sure.

10/21/2016 - 4:05pm Last I heard, the 2016

Last I heard, the 2016 Mudbowl is on pace to raise $50k for Motts this year (having raised hundreds of thousands over it's 80+ year tenure).  Think about that as you post from a basement.

11/09/2015 - 12:01pm Nothing to do with sports

This had everything to do with the hunger strike.

The president made his own bed when he plowed through the protest and did not meet with the protestors.  Had he simply gotten out of the car and met with them, or arranged to have a follow-up meeting, he probably would've kept his job because he would have shown concern for their issues.  He never demonstrated that he cared about an issue that a great many students on campus cared deeply about.  He needed to go.

This was about leadership and many of the myopic commenters on this blog missed that entirely and made some very odd comments over the last few days that evince a complete misunderstanding of reality.

Just LOL at the idiots that said the football players should have their scholarships pulled (or thought the university may actually do such a thing).  Made this blog seem like the OSU blog for a few days.  Sad stuff indeed.

05/19/2015 - 1:15pm Grew up an NU fan

I was a Northwestern fan growing up because my dad went there, much to the chagrin of my grandfather who lived in the D and was a huge M fan even though my mom went to Sparty.  I vividly remember my grandpa yelling at the TV when Kordell Stewart threw the hail mary.

One of my best memories was watching UM lose to NU 54-51 at Ryan Field.  But then I applied to college and chose to attend UM over NU and was hooked on Michigan the moment I went to my first game (against Miami-OH) and never looked back.

I drove from Ann Arbor to Detroit because I had a feeling I should watch the UM/MSU basketball game with my grandpa one night while I was in college.  He wore his "Michigan Grandpa" shirt and we watched the cagers together, cannot remember if they won or lost.  He died in surgery the next day and I was glad I went that night.

The one unifying theme from my NU fandom and my UM fandom is a passionate hatred for Notre Dame.  I honestly don't mind Ohio State or MSU, I guess thats what happens when you grow up in Chicago.

I went to NU for law school and still root for them unless they are playing Blue...

05/18/2015 - 4:02pm Volcanoes

Took a mini-course entitled "Volcanoes" with Petway.  Nice chap.

03/25/2015 - 11:42am Only go if debt free

Otherwise avoid. Probably fine to go sticker at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago and then ok with aid at Columbia, Nya, uva, mich, nu, Cornell, Georgetown, penn, etc. anywhere else should me debt free. Actually way easier to get into law school now than it was even 5 years ago, the word is getting out. I went to one of the schools mentioned above and all my classmates are doing well but many have tremendous debt (200k or more) that they will carry forever.

03/17/2015 - 5:39pm I didn't even know there was

I didn't even know there was a SAM at Michigan but I was Class of 05 and I guess they didn't exist during 01-05.

03/17/2015 - 1:04pm Hockey

Why not let Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota-Duluth join the B1G?  We already have small schools for lax only, why not do this too?  At least these schools are affiliated with current B1G members.

03/11/2015 - 11:30am I was a UM SAE around your era

Thank you for the animal house compliment, definitely true.  We definitely threw it down harder than anyone else on that campus, no doubt about that.

Buy, FYI, a really high number of those "most drunk Aholes" went on to the best business schools, law schools, medical schools, etc., and have become doctors, CEOs, big time lawyers, bankers, a congressman, started their own companies, served as officers in Iraq and Afghanistan and continue to dominate life in all phases.

01/30/2015 - 1:34pm Roids

He has not won a major since the PGA began testing for PEDs.

Allow me to introduce Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, MIT and several others.

01/28/2015 - 6:55pm ND is harder to get into than

ND is harder to get into than UMich.  It is also significantly smaller.  ND's prestige does not come from exclusivity.  I know lots of people that wanted to do the Catholic college thing and turned down ND for Georgetown and Boston College.  The ND social experience is great if one is the type that might join a cult.

01/28/2015 - 6:49pm Not true

Not a chance they reserve that many spaces for legacies.  Roughly one out of every three students being the son or daughter of an alum?  A school that size?  Not a chance.

Getting into Notre Dame is not even remotely as impressive as getting into Northwestern/UChicago/Duke or schools of that ilk.  Northwestern is probably worth the extra money over UM (barring certain majors), Notre Dame is not.

One thing both ND and NU have, however, is more of a focus on the undergrad experience.  At UMich you are kind of thrown to the wolves in LS&A, less so at Ross and other programs.  Northwestern and ND don't have Michigan's research or grad school prestige (with the exception of Kellogg, NU Law, NU Med) which I think may actually be a good thing because they focus a bit more on undergrad teaching instead of loading everything up with GSI's.  Michigan really falls down on that one as do their peer public schools.

01/28/2015 - 6:42pm Same

NU Econ will give just about the same options as Ross except for students at the lower end of NU.
