STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- More than 200 Penn State football lettermen petitioned the university Tuesday for the return of Joe Paterno's iconic bronze statue, which was removed in the summer of 2012 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse case.

The former players and coaches, who span every decade since the 1950s, also made two other demands: Return the wall that rested behind the statue and celebrated Penn State accomplishments, and issue a formal apology to Paterno's widow.

"Joe Paterno has been cast in a negative light," the letter writer, former tight end/punter Brian Masella, told ESPN, "and we're trying to correct that narrative. The university has ignored us over and over again."

The university did not immediately release a statement in response to the letter, although a spokesman acknowledged it was received.

Surprising some of the big names other than that asshole Franco Harris declined to sign it.

I was looking at the letter on Scribd, but the formatting is good on the state college article linked above.

Todd Blackledge publicly stated JoePa died of a broken heart because so many people had turned on him for doing next to nothing about Sandusky. The comment was asinine and hopefully just his grief clouding his common sense. His name not being included on that list is probably a good sign that he came to his senses.

I mean, what kind of light are you supposed to paint a man who enabled a child molester for about four decades in? It doesn't sound like one of those things where you get a statue to honor that man's achievements, at least not to me, but I forget this is Penn State and that fanbase seems to have fans and alums which see such enabling as something worth commemeration and enshrinement.

Yeah at this point I don't think it will ever set into their heads what happened at their school, and in their program. Such denial is only rivaled by the Holocaust deniers. The only solution at this point is for the Big Ten to completely seperate with penn state. Let them play with themselves, Because lets face it no one really wants to play them anymore.

If they want the statue returned so badly, then go ahead and do so. Just honor his legacy properly, and put the thing up facing a wall. After all, he did turn his back on all those kids.

Do they think anybody any time soon will forget about Paterno or what he allowed a pedophile to accomplish? But seriously, an apology? I pray to whomever one prays to that if this happened at UM we as a fanbase would never be so crazy-delusional to still be trying this crap.

Those 200+ Penn State football lettermen more than likely didnt have their penis foundled by a creepy old fuck, while their ''coach'' turned a blind eye. Sickening.

At this point, they might as well just put that stupid statue back up outside that ugly erector set stadium. Because whether it's up or down, the victims and the rest of the country have always known where Penn State's priorities are. It's disgusting. But they decided long ago that they're going to ignore all logic and facts.

I echo everyone's wish that they were just kicked out of the B1G once and for all. But just like waiting for Jim Delaney's retirement, I just don't feel it's ever going to happen...unfortunately.

Well said.

At this point, just let them put it back up. It'll show every recruit, every parent, every potential student, the whole world, that protecting its football program has been all that Penn State has really cared about.

If they want to idolize a man who (willingly or not) enabled a pedophile, then that's their sin to answer for. I know not everyone at PSU feels the same way and I hate making blanket statements like this, but that program still has elements of a toxic culture.

If I was the AD, anybody that signed this petition would be blacklisted.  Anybody that honestly believes Paterno did nothing wrong is capable of serious evil.  Very sad and scary.  These stupid ass people....why would you do anything that dredges up these events?

This only proves to the whole world what their, and joepa's, priorities are and were.  No value for the victims in happy valley!

BTW, FUCK penn state and all their delusional joepa loving fans!!!

at how absurd the Joe-hadists are.  The apologism and twisted narratives are insane.

Then I remembered that dozens of children were raped, and I just felt sick that their communithy of enablers has not leared a damn thing.

While their idiocy under most other circumstances would be very laughable, unfortunately the repercussions of their cult was and will continue to be anything but a joking matter.

I doubt Kim Jung Un enjoys such loyalty in North Korea as Joe Pa at Pedo State.

If I'm a parent of teenager there is no way in hell Penn State is an option to further their education. What a piece of shit place.

While I have two and only two rules for my kids and unequivocally support them in anything and everything else... I hear you but it also sounds like you need to have a talk with your daughter.

Ask your daughter what are her values.  Are those values willing to be compromised?  In this case, sending $$$ to an tone deaf, enabling, disgusting, sick, institution?

Is Penn State the #1 school in architecture?  Would she receive privilege like someone graduating from Stanford Law and getting on a partnership track or an Ivy and getting hired by Wall Street finance house who only hires Ivies?

Still, would that matter?

Illustrate the ramifications of what the rest of the world outside of PA thinks of PSU's rabid and delusional fanbase.  Yes, there are those who think athletics shouldn't taint academics, but the Sandusky situation is so much more than that.

At least the number who signed it is smaller than the 325 who supported the lawsuit back in 2013, led by the same group (Link). Kerry Collins and Todd Blackledge both noticably absent this time around.

Hopefully the more that comes out about Paterno's sticking his head in the sand the more people are afraid to attach their name to such a blatant defense of a child rape enabler.

I love the University of Michigan with everything I have. My passion for the school and all Michigan athletics is off the charts and my pride overflows.  However, IF this mess would have happened in Ann Arbor under Bo (which I adored) or any coach, I truly do not know how I could hold my head high and support Bo's memory.  There is a line there, and Sandusky and JoPa and countless others crossed it.

The way Buckeyes celebrate Tressel irritates me because they are ignorant, but I believe the PSU brethren that want JoPa's positive image restored are borderline insane.  Some things just should not be forgotten. What is wrong with these people?
