Because nothing matters, I guess.

1) I agree with you about the SEC.

2) The statement makes it clear that LSU either had to reinstate Wade or fire him according to the terms of his contract. Fire him today and LSU owes him a hefty buyout. Wait for the investigation and they can either keep him or fire him for cause and owe him nothing. I think the second scenario is far more likely. Either way, this was a no-brainer for LSU.

3) The timing might indicate that a settlement is in the works. That's easier to negotiate now in the off season. I'll be surprised if Wade coaches another game there.

The negotiations around the definition for With Cause in an employment agreement are typically highly contested.  And the difference in the terms given to the employee for termination with cause or without cause are dramatically different.

If this is LSU dotting I's and crossing T's, then it will lead to the right outcome.  But I'm not naive enough to rule out the possibility LSU is just going to look the other way.

Nowadays the standard clause involves triggering NCAA penalties. It's hard to fire a coach for breaking NCAA rules without the NCAA making that claim.

There was a well known similar case with Ohio State. They fired Jim O'Brien for cause after credible accusations that he had paid a player's family and that he kept thousands in cash in his desk. He sued OSU and won because they jumped the gun and didn't follow the terms of his contract.

Oh, things matter.  Let me tell you what matters.  Ice matters.  Fire matters.  Winter matters.  The Great War matters.

LSU AD: Look, Will.  All you have to do is just deny everything and you'll have your job back.

Will: OK. I deny everything.

LSU AD: Open and shut case.  See you Monday.

I feel like we're passengers in grandma's car as she hurtles down the freeway at EXACTLY 55 MPH.  Everyone passes us but God love Grandma, she is going to not exceed the speed limit because that's what laws are for.

It has reached a point now where literally every team in America openly laughs at the rules of recruiting except us.  We are content to drive 55 and wave as every other car on the road passes us cause we're not scofflaws dammit.

If this guy can't be nailed with recruiting violations nobody can.  Why are we clinging to an ideal and a sense of honor that the governing body and all of its members (save the purist at Muchigan) openly defy without any fear of punishment or retribution?

I used to hate the idea of athletes using PED’s but my position has reversed over the years.  Do what you have to do to stay healthy and compete.  This event coupled with the UNC scandal are the final nails in the coffin for me thinking that programs should mind the NCAA rules.  Fuck it, just start firing the money cannon at recruits and players.

In more cases than not, PEDs have shown long term damage to the athletes that use them.  If you are talking about substances such as EPO, then yes they can help healing process and recovery if used appropriately.  If you’re talking GH and gross anabolic steroid use, there is nothing safe about them.  They increase your risk of tendonopathies, stroke, heart attack, and injury.  Not to mention the psychiatric side effects and injuries said person can cause to someone else on the field.

Like it or not, the current lexicon should state that “it’s only cheating if you get caught”. I also don’t buy that UM coaches are just sitting around while others are getting away with recruiting violations.

Do you not remember Harbaugh’s satellite tour across the entire fucking country, including southern hotbeds, where he pushed the limit of what was allowable? Hell, they had to make up a rule just for his style of recruiting that was rubbing everyone the wrong way. I can’t speak for John Beilein but JH is certainly doing his best to keep up with everyone.

I don't think that we should play the black market incentives game everyone else is playing.  We should do it above board and with the highest ethical standards.

We should announce to the world that we will begin paying players two to three years in the future.  The announcement would cause a huge stir/debate on the topic.  We would have time to fight the legal battles that would likely ensue ahead of beginning to pay players.  We get the benefit of being on the forefront of the issue.

Paying players the way USC, Alabama, Ole Miss, et al go about the practice leaves the university at risk of the arbitrary whims of the NCAA as to the enforcement and punishment.

And frankly, the for the vast majority of Michigan grads the public perception of our degrees and our association with a University that is ethical is far more important than an extra win or two a season.

The folks at Ohio State and Alabama that are funding the payment of players attended schools where the degree doesn't infer much upon the graduate, so they don't value the reputation of the school outside of athletics.

Good. I think people should be given an opportunity to respond after being tried by the media or internet followers. Do an appropriate investigation.

The day Mark Emmert steps down will be the best and worst day ever for college sports.

The best day because the guy in charge during the most ridiculous cheating period with no serious penalties will finally be gone.

The worst day because I fully expect the NCAA to be capable of finding someone even worse.

if you really think about it, this is sad news.  i mean you've got a guy caught on wire talking about his payoff and there's no consequence.  none.

i still choose ethics over all of that, but yeah, i get the frustration, calls for money cannons, juice, etc.

I think you’ve posted before that you used to play for Michigan.  Of course it would be nice to do things the right way and we’ve all read on here about M guys getting some extra perks over the years.  Can you speak to that?  Guys driving nice SUV’s back in the day and getting free meals and drinks around AA.  Any truth to it?  If we’re going to bend some rules we should bend some different ones.

i didn't see it and some of our guys were the guys you'd expect to see that stuff - hammersteins, mallorys, muransky, etc.  could it have gone on?  sure.  if it did it wasn't blatant and it wasn't anywhere near as extravagant as other places.  hundred dollar handshakes?  maybe.  i don't want to be that naive to categorically deny that stuff but i guess you'd say that it was like comparing small arms fire with nuclear war heads.  we were as squeaky clean as a program could be back in the day. maybe not perfect, but awfully clean.

and i would add that the guys weren't getting in much trouble, either.  i won't say no drugs for anyone at any time, but it just wasn't a big feature of entertainment/weekend fun.  plenty of booze, but not much else.

Lets hope they have to bring him back to "legally" fire him.Maybe there was some law suit or contract wording ,where he had to be brought back to be fired... if that makes sense

Makes me appreciate even more that Michigan tries its best to do it the right way.

Please don't change....

As much as I bleed blue, I would sacrifice some wins for winning the right way (You just have to remind of this periodically!)

Looking around the internet today and something broke. I just see corruption and open flouting of not just the law(s) but common decency everywhere. And I'm a person who has prided himself on staring ugly in the face all his life. Going to take a little hiatus, and encourage others, if the dull throb of the ugly is paining them too, to do the same.

I hit the tipping point during the BIG Tournament... and I took the NCAA tournament off. I was just fine not watching the crap. Sure apparently the Championship game was a match-up of teams doing it right, but leading up to it we got the opportunity to crawl in mud with the pigs when Pearl v Calipari happened. Thanks I was good.

C'mon, we're no better. Not long ago our football team stretched 15 minutes too long, which is every bit as heinous, right?

I don't expect any southern school to do anything but flout the rules—the SEC has been dirty for as long as I've been alive.

What's galling is that the NCAA won't do fuck-all about any of it, and then it will run ads during halftime touting how noble and pure big-time collegiate athletics is because a bunch of swimmers and gymnasts are on the Dean's list.
