Though the defense was so bad it didn’t matter.

Frey was around recruiting and developing a lot of oline talent (a lot of which went to the nfl like lewan, molk, schofield, patrick o, etc.).

I am always dubious of a site that must announce in its name what it does, lest you not believe them.

Football Scoop is a bit better than chatsports, but barring some other form of confirmation, I'm not going to buy this as anything more than someone repeating a story they heard elsewhere for clicks.

Why can't Harbaugh do what he did when he got Don Brown? Check who has the most dominant OL in college football and offer him a deal he cannot refuse!!

It may also be a good idea to contact some retired, past Wolverine offensive lineman that may be looking for a job in football, maybe someone like Jake Long, Steve Hutchenson or Jeff Bakus just to name a few. Maybe one of these guys can get that Wolverine OL back to the dominate lines I remeber from the 90's! I also wouldn't mind if Woodson filled the DB coach position...  Go Blue!

Have been the most dominant O-lines over the past 5-7 years.

Harbaugh / Drevno helped mold the Stanford O-line dynasty, so not sure what the deal is here at UM.

BAMA has Saban, $, championships, all 5* recruits, etc, etc

Wisconsin - Madison must have something in the water.

my main hope would be that they get a guy w ho continues doing what Frey started. These kids spent a year figuring out a system and it'd be a shame if all they learned was in vain and the process of installing some new blocking concepts starts all over again.

My thoughts as well. Also, what do we do with all these "Greg Frey types" after he's gone? I mean, they still would make great tackles with S&C and coaching, regardless of Frey, but hate to see O line recruiting take a hit, or some kids transfer as a result

Position coaches should be a fairly irrelevant revolving door. Seen and not heard. Head coach needs to be the guy ultimately responsible for all aspects of the game. Tired of hearing about irrelevant position coaching moves on this staff. One guy is responsible for wins snd losses. One guy.

Yep, talk to any player—especially the 14 offensive linemen who became All Americans—who played for Schembechler and they'll tell you that Jerry Hanlon was eminently replaceable. Had no influence at all on the program. Bo could have replaced him with a tomato can and our OL and running game wouldn't have missed a beat.

Don’t think this would be a huge loss, but offensive line needs continuity and losing a coach after one year isn’t ideal. Frey is certainly not the whole issue

Maybe all the o-line problems will be solved by the new strength and conditioning coach.

It is all a mystery to me.  It seems we have been lacking line depth for a while.

In my opinion, Harbaugh seems set on finding pieces that fit his vision of an offense, even if they are coming off relative failures, much like RR had a vision of a 3-3-5 defense.  Also, our S&P+ offense ratings for '16 and '17 seasons relatively mirror our S&P+ defensive ratings for the '09 and '10 seasons under RR.

I wish Harbaugh used the same approach he took to find Don Brown to find offensive coaches.

(As an aside, recall that Harbaugh was scheduled to have a football camp with Art Briles at one point (before the scandal hit and it was canceled).  In an alternate universe where that camp occurred, I wonder if Harbaugh would have been convinced of the competitive advantages of more modern college offenses -- using tempo, etc.  I know he told Bo that his offense would have a fullback and a TE, but it's not like he promised Bo he would never go uptempo at times, etc.  The guy sought a competitive advantage at laser tag, so I hope the light goes on regarding college offenses.)

Whatever happens here it would nice if starting in 2018 we had some stability on the offensive coaching staff for a while. 1 year rentals are NOT going to get it done for us if we ever want to win championships.

I'm really impressed by all the football knowledge in this thread. We should absolutely fire Pep, Drevno, and let Frey leave. Harbaugh cans hire any one of the many qualified candidates here. Why aren't our tackles all Americans after a year with Frey?! Why didn't our injured qbs throw for 40tds with Pep?!

Even Maryland, who lost all of its scholarship QBs to injury if I recall, managed to put up a better passing S&P+ rating than Michigan this year.  Given that our passing coordinator's most recent jobs involved helming one of the worst NFL offenses in the league (Browns in 2016) and being fired from the Colts in 2015, maybe it is okay to voice concern that he might not be the ideal offensive coach in a modern college football setting.  If Harbaugh had hired the defensive equivalent from the one of the worst teams in the NFL instead of Don Brown, and our defense fell to where our offense is, wouldn't people wonder why he was not finding coaches who were recently successfuly at the college level?

Our offensive S&P+ is now almost at the the level of our defensive S&P+ during the worst RR year.

I'm a huge fan of Harbaugh and think he is absolutely the right coach for Michigan.  But I also believe that coordinators make a difference (see the difference Moorhead made at Penn State), and I don't think we can pretend that we had even a decent offense in 2017.  (Moreover, at the college level, recruiting is huge -- and by almost all reports, Wheatley and Fisch were two of our better/best recruiters.)

Constantly changing staff year in and year out is not the way to build a team.  Anyone who has managed a company knows this is not the ideal way to gain an edge on the competition.  There has to be stability in the leadership tree in order to form some sort of chemistry.  I know its football and these things happen but can we just have one year where we can retain everyone and keep pressing on instead of wasting so much time/energy on filling empty coaching spots?  Maybe I'm crazy and this is just football?

Frey has a good track record, brings some spread hurry up concepts I think we could incorporate and is a clear upgrade to drevno as a recruiter. I’d rather have Frey than drevno, our tackle situation this year was a direct result of failed recruiting by drevno, not coaching. And the qb injuries came from failed stunt pickups because even after 3 years of coaching by drevno kugler couldn’t make line calls, and both onwenu and bredeson failed to handle simple slants after two years of coaching. I’m really ready for drevno to be gone.

I wish we were moving more to a more modern college approach that would value tempo, etc., but it doesn't seem like there is interest from other programs for Drevno (or Pep), and I'm not sure Harbaugh would push them out without them having a landing spot.  (It would also be very expensive.)  Frey is desired by an excellent program with a new coach Harbaugh loves.  Given that the Frey/Drevno shared OL experiment didn't seem to work this season, and the rumors that Harbaugh might be bringing in Bret Bielema's former OC and strength and conditioning coach from Arkansas, it seems likely that we will let Frey go to FSU, and double or triple-down on our very old school, old "pro-style" approach.  (I wonder if signing Patterson if giving Harbaugh some pause, though.)

Considering all the tackles we've recruited lately are tall skinny athletic TE's that Frey specializes in turning into NFL players this would be a major loss.

Because it seems like Frey and Drevno were def recruiting different types of linemen. Drevno looked like he liked sheer size and power and Frey seems to like for them to build up to lineman size and be more nimble. I’m not saying one is right and the other is wrong, just that they seem to have different philosophies.
