Unverified Voracity Wants You To Purchase These Quality Fireworks Comment Count

Brian July 2nd, 2021 at 2:44 PM

Name and image is here. The floodgates have opened and now Jordan Bohannon can help sell fireworks. Lo, it is a new era. A couple of Michigan players have signed on with a company that will pair you with athletes so you can play games with them, and Adrien Nunez—who has 1.6 million TikTok followers—launched some merch. Social media!

…as Nuñez received cupping therapy in a training room, he pulled out his phone and filmed his legs. “People on TikTok go viral for literally the dumbest reasons possible,” a voice says in the published clip, which has since been played 116,000 times.

There was a brief Michigan-related kerfuffle when human-type object Darren Rovell tweeted out that Michigan's policy is that athletes have to file their deals with the AD a week before they're actually signed, causing 1) a bunch of people saying that's bad and dumb and 2) an even larger number of people pointing out that Michigan is aligning their policy with state law:

It's possible the state will revisit the NIL bill they passed if that actually turns out to be a problem.

Note that the version of NIL that passed is the most permissive, and opens virtually all the doors:

the Council rejected another proposal that — while largely similar — also included the proviso that schools’ NIL policies not allow payments from “any booster, or any person or entity acting on behalf” of the school.

This indicates that the Council was concerned that virtually any restriction in a temporary policy would draw a legal challenge based on the Supreme Court’s ruling last week in the Alston antitrust case.

So the doors are all the way open. Guy Who Sells Cars can give people loaners above-board now. Handshakes are probably going to continue but their relative importance will plummet.

[After THE JUMP: 420 games!]

Everything's coming up Sethhouse! Yeah Seth is going to jump into this like Scrooge McDuck swan diving into his vault. The Bentley has released 420(!) football games dating from 1930 to 1986. An incredible resource.

Post-lottery mocks. Franz lands 10th in the Athletic's NBA mock draft:

The player: Wagner is an interesting 3-and-D prospect at 6-9. His movement is terrific, with great lateral quickness. He can guard a variety of perimeter players on the ball, but his off-ball instincts are absolutely spectacular. He knows exactly where to be positionally, and his reactivity to get deflections is outstanding. The big question revolves around his shot, which comes and goes far too often. Sometimes, he looks like a legit 40 percent 3-point shooter in the future. Other times, he looks like a 30 percent guy and totally non-confident in the jumper mechanics. Whichever one he is will determine his career. If he becomes that high-level shooter, he’ll be a very high-level role player who starts. If he doesn’t, he’s more in the vein of his brother, Moritz, as an end-of-the-rotation guy.

The thing you may care about the most. Yes, the current NIL permissions appear to allow athletes to negotiate in groups allow athletes to negotiate in groups. A couple of organizations are trying to round up large numbers of athletes:

That’s changing, and now Opendorse and OneTeam Partners are joining forces to deliver group licensing opportunities to athletes, announcing an exclusive partnership days before college athletes will be allowed to monetize their NIL through commercial and endorsement deals for the first time. OneTeam said it sees significant untapped group licensing opportunity in the college space, particularly with the infrastructure it already has in place to bring licensed products to market quickly.

By partnering with Opendorse, OneTeam will have a tech-based way to aggregate college athlete rights without any sort of college athlete union or players association.

Aaaaand yep the thing you want is potentially on the table:

"There’s a level of fairness and opportunity that group licensing brings that should be really appealing to all the college athletes [because it] allows for something like a video game to come to life that could include all of the athletes on a given football team. It’s not going to just be the star quarterback.”

EA has repeatedly stated that they would love to pay players so that NCAA Football can return, and now those wheels are in motion.

It might happen. Owen Power's already stated he's leaning towards a return to Michigan next year, and now Matt Beniers has joined him:

"I'm definitely leaning towards coming back," Beniers said. "We're going to have a really good group, a lot of good players, and we're going to get a real run at a national title. I definitely want to win a Big Ten championship and kind of do that whole college thing after getting closed down last year because of COVID." …

"I'd love to be in college, kind of have a college life, especially after last year, we didn't really get the full college experience, getting fans at games, didn't get to go to a classroom, going into the classrooms. "

Power recently reiterated his lean to return in a press conference. Michigan's forced COVID withdrawal appears to have a silver lining.

The most detailed report. If you want to know as much as possible about incoming D Luke Hughes this is comprehensive:

Etc.: Chris Peters scouting reports on Power, Beniers, and Dylan Duke. TSN on Kent Johnson and Hughes. Michigan will play @ UNC in the ACC/B10 challenge. Three men's gymnastics athletes are headed to the Olympics. Long NBA draft roundtable at Prospective Insight doesn't actually mention Franz Wagner but I thought it was interesting all the same. Go quiz nerds.

I think i need to hibernate for a few decades.  Im not a fan of all this horseshit.

One of the things i loved about college was the passion - the leave it all on the field mentality.  They are FIGHTING for a paycheck. The listen to their coaches.  They absorb as much as possible.  They play HARD because they have to get drafted and make a paycheck to pay for their and their mothers house.

This is all going to shit.  Now we will have a bunch of rich, entitled, know it all 19 year olds who do not want to put in the work and listen to their coaches (just like the NBA).  I got the paycheck, now i can check-out.

"I want to see guys work to pay off their moms house, but now I'm upset that they may be able to do that sooner. Because being able to make significant money sooner than the timeline I have in my head suddenly makes them entitled. Also, I'm going to drop a reference to the NBA out of nowhere in here to make it a little easier for you to answer the 'is this guy racist?' question that popped in your head while reading this."

Look man, to an extent, I feel you.  But college athletics (specifically the revenue generating sports) did this to itself.  Revenue has grown almost exponentially.  They cram in as many commercials as possible to prop up mega TV deals- to the point where CFB games are now longer than NFL games.  Coaches (mainly assistants) are making like 5 times what they were making just a decade ago.  Amateurism in college sports is defensible to some extent until literally everyone associated with it is getting rich, not just making a living wage, besides the players.

For the record I don’t think Nunez is getting drafted, he’s fighting for a different form of paycheck.  I’m very happy for the kid that he can make some money to support himself.  This isn’t about the players who are going to get drafted and make millions, it’s about the kids who put in a ton of effort for our entertainment, and allowing them to make money while doing so.

I suspect most followers are bots. This isn’t an indictment of Nunez. TikTok is popular, and there’s a cottage industry devoted to tracking web trends. So pretty much any active account will trigger a bot follow.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who’ll follow anything, but if less than 10% of your supposed fans are watching what you’ve uploaded, I’ll bet most of them are just lines of code.

I have a question about a university restricting a college athlete from doing something that competes with them, i.e., the school is a Nike school and Adidas will pay the player for wearing its product.  It seems to me that such a prohibition is anti-competitive and a potential antitrust violation.

I also wonder about scholarships, particularly when there are obvious one and done situations.  Could the value of the scholarship be construed as income taxable to the player along with the other perks that come with being a scholarship athlete such as S&C, coaching, etc.?

If you had an employment contract that prohibited you from advertising for Ford, sure.  But what if you did not?  For many of these athletes, their day in the sun may not be long lasting and their opportunity for financial gain from NIL may be very limited.  I'm not so sure this is as cut and dry as your example would suggest.

Do you think a university. as part of its recruiting package, should provide a list of all possible parties that that university has a relationship with so that the recruit can make a more informed choice about potential financial opportunities as part of the decision making process?  What if Nike is replaced with another company after the recruit matriculates?  What then?  How are the parties bound?

It's going to be interesting.

In the "cool story bro'" category, I have a friend who is a model in Detroit and employed as (believe it or not) an engineer by GM. She did a modeling gig for Ford, and GM had to approve it. Her face was not allowed to be shown, but apparently showing the rest of her was deemed valuable enough that Ford paid her. She also appears in GM literature, of course, face and all.

I’d like to see Franz get picked by the Warriors. With Klay coming back, they will instantly be back in contention in the West. With Curry and Klay, Franz doesn’t need to be a threat from 3 right away. Maybe they could even work with him and get him to 40%. Anyway, I see him filling that Draymond role, only as a better finisher at the rim. It would also make for a fun 2nd unit with him and Poole.

But they probably won’t pick him at 7 and he’ll be gone when they pick again at 14.

Word on the street is that the Warriors are looking to convert Wiseman and the 7th pick into a win now contributer, which makes sense to me. Steph, Draymond and Klay are on the other side of 30 and they aren't in a position where they can give Wiseman or other youngsters developmental minutes to make mistakes. I think those assets get flipped in pursuit of another ready made role player.

If that's true, I'm curious if they'd be interested in Jerami Grant from the Pistons.  Jerami made some pretty big improvements and was the Piston's primary scorer.  He's also on the Olympic team this summer.  If I'm the Warriors, I'd consider him.  And if I'm the Pistons, I'd take that deal in a heartbeat.  Wiseman can work on his game over the next year or two with Cade Cunningham feeding him the ball in the post, plus another top ten pick!

If we actually cared about our veterans with PTSD instead of just paying them lip service, they would be banned, yes.

July 4 is a day we celebrate our freedom by making a bunch of huge explosions that scare the shit out of the soldiers who fought for our nation.

It also freaks out many animals, starts fires, and gets a lot of people injured—many of them children. I’ve read enough stories of “hold my beer” parents maiming their own kids.

I had a lot of fun playing with fireworks as a kid, and boy do I miss that. But just a glance at how many people in this country believe QAnon conspiracy theories tells me the average American is way too fucking stupid to be trusted with pyrotechnics.

Man, having that Bentley archive available is crazy cool. I took a dip into it when it was posted on the forum and spent a couple hours reading clippings and old box scores (21 yards a punt, what? - then NEVER punt!) and watching videos of UM football games from 80 years ago.
